2 Why study MEPP? Study the Master of European Politics and Policies when looking for the combination of academic excellence in the comparative study of public sector structures, policy making and administration within Europe on the one hand, and the study of institutions, decision-making and policies of the European Union on the other hand. The programme s concern for the practical challenges professionals in policy, administrative and consultative functions face at the sub-state, state and EU level is a distinctive added value. In promoting comparative approaches MEPP not only seeks to strengthen your knowledge and analytical skills, but also promotes an open-minded attitude towards diversity. In 2005, MEPP was endorsed by the European Association for Public Administration Accreditation. Who can start? To embark on your Road-MEPP to Europe, you should be equipped with the following tools. You have a good understanding of public administration, international and European organizations or politics in your home country and on the European level, demonstrated by holding a degree in the fields of Political Science, Sociology, Law, Economics or Contemporary European History. You have a university degree (master or 4 year bachelor), obtained cum laude at an internationally recognized university. Candidates with a degree in other fields can be admitted on the grounds of a professional experience in public policy or public administration or based on a complementary study in a relevant field. All applicants whose native language is not English are required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language, by submitting the results of an internationally recognized language proficiency test (TOEFL or IELTS). In addition, you should show a genuine interest in comparative analysis and in the European integration process. You are expected to be open to the diversity in the European context and to have excellent communicative skills in light of group work and academic writing of publications and reports. These can be shown in a two-page motivation letter expressing you interest in the programme. Detailed admission criteria can be found on the Internet. 3 MEPP: An explicit European Policy and Public Administration programme The MEPP programme is organized both by the Public Management Institute and the Institute for International and European Policy. The MEPP curriculum has a strong core of compulsory courses on the comparative study of public policies, administration and management in different member states and on the political dynamics of European integration itself. The rich variety of electives enables students to explore their particular interests. The program further trains your research skills. Your MEPP dissertation is a contribution to theory and practice of public administration and public policy making in the European context. 4 Studies without borders: the EMPA Network The MEPP programme is part of a wider network, the European Master of Public Administration Consortium (EMPA). Building on their respective strengths and potentials in the field of European Public Administration, the following institutions have developed a framework for outstanding research, well-structured and closely supervised student exchanges: University of Geneva (Switzerland); Corvinus University of Budapest (Hungary); Deutsche Hochschule für Verwaltungswissenschaften Speyer (Germany); Institut d Etudes Politiques de Paris (France); University of Vaasa (Finland); University of Liverpool (United Kingdom); Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (The Netherlands); Rijksuniversiteit Leiden (The Netherlands); Università Bocconi (Italy); Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium): Tallinn University of Technology (Estonia). MEPP students are offered the possibility to continue the second semester of their study programme at one of the above-mentioned EMPA institutions. They receive a travel reimbursement and are exempted from paying any additional registration fees. Successful students will be awarded an EMPA certificate, signed by both the home university and the partner institution. More information on the procedure for participation in the EMPA exchange programme can be found on the Internet. In addition to attending the courses, MEPP students are invited to visit a number of European and international institutions. Each year the programme organises study trips to the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions of the European Union and to some representation offices of the European regions in Brussels. These study trips enable them to observe the proceedings of the main European institutions from the inside and to meet various European officials. Our students can also attend multiple symposia, workshops, conferences and guest lectures because of our membership in the influential Centre for European Policy Studies (Brussels) and our close connection to the Leuven Centre for Global Governances studies.

5 Your stay in Leuven Situated in the heart of Western Europe, K.U.Leuven has been a centre of learning for almost six centuries. Founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V, K.U.Leuven bears the double honour of being one of the oldest existent Catholic universities in the world and the oldest university in the Low Countries. The University s academic fame has attracted scholars and scientists such as Justus Lipsius, Gerard Mercator and Andreas Vesalius, all of whom have made valuable contributions to European intellectual life. Nowadays, the University of Leuven is a modern university, offering an ideal research and learning environment, rooted in a solid and venerable tradition but with its sights set squarely on the future. Located within the vibrant city of Leuven in the centre of Belgium and 20 min. from Brussels, it is your home base to explore Europe! Leuven is very proud of both its past and its heritage, and rightly so. There is so much to see and to do in and around Leuven that a longer stay is appropriate. The first references to the town can be traced back as far as the 9th century and in spite of its strategic location on the river Dyle, it was not until around the 11th-12th century that Leuven began to develop as an important trading centre within the Duchy of Brabant. It was at this time that its first town wall, churches, monasteries and abbeys were built. Although centuries old, Leuven is still alive and kicking! The city has developed into a well-equipped, modern town with a thriving service industry economy and with a good balance of old and new buildings combining to offer a well-designed infrastructure to suit the demands of today s modern city with a rich tradition.
