1 New York City College of Technology The City University of New York Department of Communication Design COMD Web III - Design Studio Course Description Development of skills learned in Web II such as XHTML, CSS, and introduction of the Document Object Module (DOM). Students will combine skills learned in Web I & II; Analytics, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and other technologies to create a web site with rich media (audio and video elements). Requires previously built site for analytic assessment and SEO improvements. 3 cl hrs, 3 cr Prerequisites COMD 3551 or department approval. Course Objectives INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES For the successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Work professionally, from proposal, design, through implementation and testing. Showcase expert design skills through seamless implementation. ASSESSMENT Evaluation methods and criteria Students will demonstrate competency by writing a proposal with client in mind. They will offer business analysis, site diagram, flowcharts, and wireframe and clear objectives. Students will demonstrate competency by offering branding and multiple web design options. They will build a complete website 1

2 Integrate multiple technologies and have reusable dynamic components. Students will demonstrate competency by combining CSS, XHTML, forms, Javascript, Flash, PHP. Analyze the performance of their web sites based on the data offered by an implemented analytics package. Improve websites based on performance of their analytics by adjusting the concept, design, content and usability Students will display competency through an analysis report given on the performance of their site. Students will display competency through changes to their site project and improvement in their analytics. General Education Outcome covered: Lifelong Learning The student will demonstrate an awareness of resources for continued lifelong learning. Social Interaction The student will demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with people from a variety of cultures to seek consensus or resolve conflicts. Oral Communication Listening: The student will demonstrate the ability to discern pertinent information from irrelevant information. How the outcome is assessed: Evaluate through class discussion and written tests if students become aware of resources they can use as references throughout their careers. Assess the ability of the student to develop constructive relationship with classmates from many cultures through class discussion. Evaluate how well students absorbed and consequently applied the learning through oral critiques of projects. Only two absences may be allowed. After two absences, a student may be withdrawn because of unsatisfactory attendance (code WU). Students arriving after the roll is taken will be marked late. Students may be notified at the earliest opportunity in class after they have been absent or late. After being absent two times or equivalent (2 lateness = 1 absence), a student may be asked to withdraw from the class (code W before the College drop deadline, 4/9/08) or may be withdrawn from the class (code WU). Academic Integrity Standards You are responsible for reading, understanding and abiding by the NYC College of Technology Student Handbook, Student Rights & Responsibilities, section Academic Integrity Standards. Academic dishonesty of any type, including cheating and plagiarism is unacceptable. "Cheating" is misrepresenting another student's efforts/work as your own. "Plagiarism" is the representation of another person's work, words or concepts as your own.
