1 LIS 786: Advanced Web Design Fall 2012 Class meetings: Fridays, August 31 December 14, :30 4:30 p.m. Crown 330 Dr. Kate Marek Dominican University Graduate School of Library and Information Science Crown Office hours Wednesdays 5:00 6:00 p.m.; Fridays 11:0 a.m. noon. Course Description LIS 786 is an advanced seminar in Web design which will build on students basic Web design knowledge. The course will include deep examination of issues such as information architecture, accessibility and usability, professional interface design, and overall editorial management. In addition, students will gain a deeper understanding of emerging Web design trends and technologies such as content management systems. Prerequisites are LIS 701 and 703; LIS 753 or demonstrated knowledge of XHTML and CSS. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students will be able to: Articulate an understanding of information architecture and interface design; o (Match to GSLIS Learning Goals and Outcomes: 4b, 4c) Understand professional design and editorial issues as they apply to the Web o (Match to GSLIS Learning Goals and Outcomes: 3b) Understand the function of the Web design team within an organization; o (Match to GSLIS Learning Goals and Outcomes: 5c, 5f, 5g) Identify emerging design and development trends, and discuss future potential and barriers for library Web design; o (Match to GSLIS Learning Goals and Outcomes: 3d; 4b, 4c) Create, execute, and evaluate a website usability study; o (Match to GSLIS Learning Goals and Outcomes: 2c; 3c) Construct and evaluate a website using a content management system such as Drupal; o (Match to GSLIS Learning Goals and Outcomes: 2d; 3a, 3b, 3c; 5g) Create unique website features using scripting languages such as PHP o (Match to GSLIS Learning Goals and Outcomes: 2d; 3a, 3b; 5g) 1

You are expected to have read the assigned material and come to class prepared to discuss and critique these readings and resources, and to apply the principles to your course work. You are always encouraged to bring additional literature to the attention of the class. Academic Honesty and Integrity: "All students of the GSLIS are expected to observe high standards of academic honesty and integrity. Any student whose conduct violates such standards may be subject to disciplinary action as determined by due process." (GSLIS Bulletin, p. 23) Plagiarism is unacceptable and will result in project failure. Systematic plagiarism will result in course failure. See Purdue University's "Avoiding Plagiarism" at Schedule Note: Each class session will begin with a What s New? conversation, where students will share news items about the Internet, emerging technologies, and general course issues. Be prepared to 3

4 contribute to these discussions by scanning blogs and websites, along with a variety of print, audio, and video sources. (Example: mashable.com, Drupal blogs, etc. share your favorite.)
