3 The Instructions For Scanning Laboratory Designed Abutment The following instructions may be used by a laboratory to scan patient cases to create a Laboratory Designed Abutment. These instructions will guide the user through scanning a set of models through the scanning software. In this plan, the operator uses a scan specified scan cap to derive the implant location. Pouring The Model And Cast STEP 1: Pour the model. Starting The Scanner STEP 1: Log onto the computer. STEP 2: Turn scanner power on (switch is located on the back of the scanner). STEP 2: Attach the scan cap to the analog. STEP 3: Spray the model with an appropriate anti-reflective spray. STEP 3: Open the Scan Server Software (icon is located on the computer desktop). The green lights on the scanner and toolbar will begin flashing. Once the green lights on the scanner and toolbar become solid, proceed to the next step. 1

4 The Instructions For Scanning Laboratory Designed Abutment (Continued) Calibrating The Scanner STEP 1: Open the Scan Server Software (icon is located on the computer desktop). STEP 2: Select the Scan Server Software (icon is located on the bottom toolbar). STEP 3: Select Calibrate. STEP 4; Enter password: docal Scanning Two Models STEP 1: Verify that the Scan Server is on. STEP 2: Open the Dental Manager Software (icon is located on the computer desktop). STEP 3: Select the appropriate order in the Dental Manager Software to open the order in the ScanIt Restoration Software. STEP 5: Follow the directions of the Calibration Wizard using the dot plate and block. STEP 4: Load the mounted model with the scan cap(s) into the scanner and shut the doors. 2

5 Instructions For Scanning The Laboratory Designed Abutment (Continued) STEP 5: Select Next. Scanning of the mounted model with the scan cap(s) will begin. STEP 8: Repeat step 7 to scan each additional abutment. STEP 9: Select Continue. Scanning of the abutment will begin. STEP 10: Align the CAD model of the appropriate scan cap by placing corresponding points on the scan and the CAD model. STEP 6: The initial scan of the CAD model appears. Right-click mouse to rotate. Center-click mouse to pan. Left-click mouse to select. STEP 12 Apply to align the models. STEP 7: Determine the appropriate abutment area for high resolution scanning. The prompt window will identify the abutment. Left-click the mouse to make selections. Once all selections are made, select Continue. STEP 11: Press apply to align the CAD models. If alignment of the CAD models fails, press the reset button and attempt the alignment again, this time using the three-point alignment. 3

6 The Instructions For Scanning Laboratory Designed Abutment (Continued) STEP 12: Perform a three-point alignment by placing three corresponding points on the CAD scan cap and the scanned model. STEP 16: Use the selection tool to select the appropriate area for low resolution scanning. STEP 17: Select Continue after selecting the area surrounding the scan cap. Scanning begins. STEP 18: When the scan is finished, insert the opposing arch. STEP 19: Select Next to begin overview scanning. STEP 20: The initial scan of the CAD model appears. Right-click mouse to rotate. Center-click mouse to pan. Left-click mouse to select. STEP 13: Select OK to exit the alignment screen or to move to the next abutment. STEP 14: The user is prompted to skip the gingival mask scanning. Remove the scan cap and select No. STEP 15: Select Next under the prompt to remove the abutments and insert the gingival mask. The initial overview scan appears again. STEP 21: Select the appropriate opposing area for high resolution scanning and select Continue to begin scanning. STEP 22: Trim the opposing model. STEP 23: Select the area that should be deleted from the scan and select Apply. STEP 24: Repeat step 23 until all excess data has been deleted. STEP 25: Select OK to proceed. STEP 26: Use wax, putty matrix or a rubber band and insert upper and lower arches together with the front side facing the lasers (back). 4

STEP 28: After the scan is complete, align the high resolution scans with the scan of the two models together by placing one point on each corresponding model. STEP 35: Select OK when the models are aligned correctly. The models are shown together after all alignments are complete. Once scanning is complete, save the file. STEP 36: Close the ScanIt Restoration Software by clicking on the red X in the upper right corner. STEP 29: Select OK to align the scans for the first model. If the models are aligned correctly, select OK. STEP 30: If the models are not aligned correctly, select Reset and repeat the alignment by selecting the three-point alignment feature. This will repeat the alignment with three points per model. STEP 31: Select OK when the models are aligned correctly. STEP 32: Repeat the alignment process for the opposing arch by placing one point on each model. STEP 33: Select OK to align the scans for the second model. If the models are aligned correctly, select OK. STEP 34: If the models are not aligned correctly, select Reset and repeat the alignment by selecting the three-point alignment feature. This will repeat the alignment with three points per model. 5

8 The Instructions For Scanning Laboratory Designed Abutment (Continued) Scanning A Wax-Up Tooth Or Bite Registration With A Stone Model Using A Scanner STEP 1: Open the Dental Manager Software (icon is on the computer desktop). STEP 11: Repeat steps 9-10 for each additional abutment. STEP 12: Select Continue to begin scanning. STEP 13: Remove arch and abutments. Align the CAD model of the appropriate scan cap by placing corresponding points on the scan and the CAD model. STEP 14: Press Apply to align the models. STEP 2: Select the appropriate order in the Dental Manager Software to open it in the ScanIt Restoration Software. STEP 3: Insert the stone model with the wax-up or bite registration. STEP 4: Select Next to begin the low resolution scan. STEP 5: Select the appropriate area for the bite or wax-up tooth using the left mouse to make selections. STEP 6: Select Continue to begin scan of the bite or wax-up tooth. STEP 7: When the scan is complete, remove the bite or wax-up tooth without shifting the location of the stone model to reveal the scan cap underneath. STEP 15: If necessary, press the Reset button and attempt the alignment again, using the threepoint alignment. Perform a three-point alignment by placing three corresponding points on the CAD scan cap and the scanned model. STEP 16: Select OK to exit the alignment position or to move to the next abutment. STEP 17: The user is then prompted to skip the gingival mask scanning. Remove the scan cap and select No. STEP 18: Select Next under the prompt to remove abutments and insert the gingival mask. The initial overview scan appears again. STEP 19: Use the selection tools to select the appropriate area for low resolution scanning. STEP 20: Select Continue after selecting the area surrounding the scan cap. Scanning begins. STEP 21: When the scan is finished, trim the bite if desired using the selection tools. Select OK when complete. Model is shown with bite or wax-up tooth. STEP 8: Select Next to begin a scan of the scan cap. STEP 9: Select Next to begin scanning the arch after the arch is inserted with the scanning abutments. STEP 22: Close the ScanIt Restoration Software by clicking the red X in the upper right corner or selecting the close button. STEP 10: Select the appropriate scan cap area for high resolution scanning. The prompt window will show which abutment is to be selected. Use the left mouse to make selections. Once the selections are complete, select Continue. 6

9 Instructions For Designing Abutments Using Scanning Software The Laboratory Designed Abutment STEP 1: Retrieve the scanned file. Open a case in the Dental Designer Software by double-clicking on a job that lists the status as Scanned. Place a control point on the margin to indicate the location of the abutment. STEP 3: Select the abutment. Select the appropriate top cap from the library pull down menu in the Setting window (located at the lower left). STEP 2: Set the insertion direction by rotating the model to the occlusal plane. STEP 4: Set the margin using the Parametric tool. Establish the emergence curve by modifying the height and diameter of the default margin. Note: The vertical base offset should be 0.25mm. ff 7

Adjust the shape by moving the control points for the parameters. STEP 6: Set the emergence profile using the Parametric tool. Manipulate the top of the abutment defined by the emergence profile. Adjust the position by using the Parametric tool. 8

11 Instructions For Designing Abutments Using Scanning Software The Laboratory Designed Abutment (Continued) STEP 7: Adjust the shape of the abutment top using the Sculpt tool. STEP 9: Check the abutment for machinability. In the Assembly tool, check the Use Screw Hole box to show screw hole placement. Ensure that the screw head is not exposed and no areas of breakthrough are generated. Uncheck Use Screw Hole. Proper machine CAM data should not have the hole geometry incorporated in the tool path. STEP 8: Finish the contour of the abutment s overall shape by using the Virtual Wax Knife. By using a Virtual Wax Knife in the Sculpt tool, material can be added, removed or smoothed on the abutment after the overall shape has been established. STEP 10: Save the file and create data files as needed. Select the Finish button. Save the abutment design file. 9
