Latest Additions Orthodontic Archiving A completely new module is available for purchase as an orthodontic support tool allowing to build virtual study models and archive them. A virtual study model can be designed from the dedicated station or with the help of the Wizard assisted mode. A) Scan cast study models to create virtual models Used in combination with a model scanner, the Orthodontic Archiving module lets you scan your study models, so that you can stor e them on a har d dr ive. In other wor ds, you ar e not obliged to stor e the physical models in costly contr olled stor age r ooms anymor e, knowing that you can use the vir tual ar chive to r epr int a copy. B) Scan impressions to create virtual models Dental Wings Inc. - Page 3 / 17
Used in combination with an impression scanner, such as iseries, 7Series, and now 3Series, the or thodontic module enables to cr eate a vir tual study model. Once it is built, use it instead of a physical cast to add to the case's archive. On demand, send the.stl files to a production centre where the model can be manufactured with a digital milling machine or with a 3D printing process to completely bypass making a cast. Wizard Workflow The Wizard guides you through all these steps. Order Creation 1. Select New Orthodontic Model in the Wizard starting interface. 2. Name the order or leave it with the default name. 3. Enter the dentist and the patient names. 4. Select the model type into which the virtual model should be computed. 5. Click Next. Scan The upper jaw has to always be scanned first. Place it on the model holder. Impr ession Scan 1. Install the holder inside the scanner and click Next. 2. The Next button will take you through every step of the usual scanning procedure. Model Scan 1. In the Scan session configuration window, the Palatal data needed should be selected. 2. Include palate in the area definition. 3. Scan the upper jaw, then mount it with the lower jaw to scan an occclusion key. 4. Remove the upper and scan the lower. 5. Use the 3-point repositioning to confirm the upper positon on the occlusion key. 6. Use the 3-point repositioning to define the lower position on the occlusion key. Cleaning Tools 1. The cleaning tool editor window, with its three tabs, combines all types of actions that you can apply to scan surfaces: deleting unwanted areas of the scan filling holes virtual waxing tools (add, remove, smooth and morph) Dental Wings Inc. - Page 4 / 17
2. They are available successively for upper and lower arches.using them at this point is optional, as they will be available later in the CAD station. 3. For a scanned cast model, you will obtain better results if you clean out the base and keep only the dentition of the scan. Design Clean upper arch scan / Clean lower arch scan If it is not already done, use the cleaning tools to remove undesired surfaces of the scan or to fill holes in the mesh. Orthodontic parameters You can change the type of base that was defined when creating the order by choosing between Tweed, American or Simple Although the base dimensions are set automatically for the entire model to fit inside, it might need some adjustment in order to fit better the shape of the arch. These two parameter values define the extra space between the tooth limit and the edge of the base : Width:Increase value to make the base wider. Length:Increase value to make the base longer. Reposition base Review Use the given handles to move and rotate the model, so that it is centred in the base. Indirectly, according to the model vertical position in regard to the base, this will also define the thickness of the base. Once the model is computed, you can examine the result from six isolated orthogonal views. Export After having validated the model, the Next button will take you to the Export STL files window. Choose the export path. Store your STL files on a secure and convenient support of your choice. These are the same files that you can use to print your models with the help of a digital milling machine or with a 3D printing process. If you do not type in a custom file name, the default name will be defined as: My_Laboratory_DentistName_PatientName_upper_arch.stl My_Laboratory_DentistName_PatientName_lower_arch.stl Dental Wings Inc. - Page 5 / 17
Bite Splint This new module is now part of our offer as a tool for designing protectors and mouth guards of various kinds. Used with an appropriate material file, the designs created in the Bite Splint module could then be used in the treatment of bruxism. Bite Splints can be designed from the dedicated station or with the help of the Wizard assisted mode. Since the assisted mode is best suited for beginning with a module, our below introductory tutorial will feature the Wizard. Example of a bite splint Bite Splint Wizard Create Order 1. Select the New Bite Splint order in the Wizard starting interface. 2. Name the order or leave the default name. 3. Enter the dentist and the patient names. 4. Select the material in which the bite splint will be manufactured. In order to see a material displayed in the drop-down menu, you have to previously import the appropriate.xml material file from the Material Management station. 5. Select on which jaw, upper or lower, the bite splint will be retained. Both arches are always scanned. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 6 / 17
6. The Attached documents option has been added for your convenience, but is not mandatory. 7. Click Next Scan 1. Regardless of the arch on which you are designing the mouth guard, the upper arch is always scanned first. 2. The Next button will take you through every step of the usual scanning procedure 3. Make sure that the defined area of interest includes all the teeth that will be covered by the bite splint. 4. The cleaning tool editor window, with its 3 tabs, combines all type of actions that you can apply to scan surfaces: deleting unwanted areas of the scan filling holes virtual waxing tools (add, remove, smooth and morph) If the scan is correct, just click Nex to leave it untouched and continue. The most important is that the occlusal surface has no holes because it would affect the prosthesis design. If holes appear on the critical area, you can either use the cleaning tools to fix them, or rescan the surface. Once all scan steps are done, the Wizard will also take you through the design steps. Design These steps should be done in this suggested order, but as you are working on your design, you may return to a previous step at anytime by clicking on an icon from the menu bar at the bottom. Block out undercuts Edit blocked model Edit current margin design Virtual articulator Edit splint elements Set an optimal angle to block major undercuts that might interfere with prosthesis insertion. This step should be done first. With the help of shaping tools, you can add, remove, smooth and morph in order to crate retention areas. On the supportive jaw, trace the contour of the prosthesis by placing the dots one by one or by drawing freely on the teeth. This action is what triggers the splint computation. So use it as a "recompute" function when modifying the blocked model with one of the two previous operations. With the help of the virtual articulator, calculate the dynamic occlusion with a set of customizable parameters.1 2 By adding a predefined layer of material on the occlusal plane, reinforce support for the antagonist's imprint. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 7 / 17
Remove occlusion interference Add/Remove material By clicking this icon, the dynamic occlusion that was calculated with the "Explore" function of the virtual articulator will be removed from the occlusal face of the splint3 Refine the design by editing the prosthesis surface for maximum comfort and aesthetics. 1 Pay a particular attention to the incisal height parameter, as it will result in the final splint minimum thickness on occlusal surfaces. It should at least meet the material's minimum thickness requirement. 2 For a lower jaw design, select Update upper dynamic surface, and for an upper jaw design, select Update lower dynamic surface. Once you have set the parameters, you have to click the Explore button in order to compile and use the dynamic information for modelling the occlusal surface of the bite splint. 3 Before validating the material removal, you can preview the surface that will be clipped with the bite splint surfaces that interfere with the dynamic occlusion calculation. After this operation, if you still see some interfering surfaces, this is where the software has automatically protected the material's minimum thickness. We recommend that you examine the remaining interference as it will affect the patient's comfort. Increasing the incisal height negative value during exploration with the virtual articulator might reduce the effect of the thickness correction, but at the same time it affects the occlusion height when the patient's jaw is at rest. The dynamic occlusion is displayed in dark blue, and the material from the bite splint design that interferes with it is displayed in light blue. After you use the Remove interference function, the light blue that remains is where the material minimum thickness was corrected. Contact can occur. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 8 / 17
Serial ID If the bite splint is designed from the station rather than from the Wizard, a tag feature is available. The requested text can be engraved or embossed and the size and depth are fully editable, More than one tag can be added per design. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 9 / 17
Partial Wizard An assisted design mode was put together to help you get started with partial designs. The Partial Wizard offers the same functionality as the Partial station, with the addition of the benefits of a linear and guided workflow. The Wizard mode is quick to learn and easy to use. 11 Impression Scan on 3Series Satisfied with your 3Series scanner? Get even more opportunities with the impression adaptor. Conceived to fit on the standard model holder, it upgrades your system to support impression scanning. When combined with the software update, it allows to scan impressions of any type. This holder can also be used to scan wax-ups.they must be properly mounted on a stick or have some kind of extension that can be held by the screw, in the same way as impressions. The workflow allows for scanning both sides of a wax-up, so that the Waxing copy can be performed on all 3Series. Impression adaptor for 3Series, mounted on the standard holder, with an impression. How to fix the adaptor on the holder 1. Using the hexagonal key that was provided with the scanner, unscrew the back of the model holder to widen the space allowed on the platform. 2. Lay the adaptor on the holder. It will correctly position itself with its underneath grooves that will sit on the metal rods of the holder. 3. Screw to tighten the adaptor into place. 4. Now use a positioning screw on top of the adaptor to secure an impression. 5. The impression must fit inside the circle defined by the prolongation of the adaptor's edge. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 11 / 17
Featured Improvements Wizard These two simple tools are well known and appreciated by our users, so we have made them available in the Wizard. Take screenshots At any time during the workflow, this camera button captures the complete DWOS software window and saves it automatically in the desktop folder. The.png files created are useful for communicating about your digital workflow with clinicians: engage dialog, share concerns and ensure you deliver the best possible results. Also, this screenshot button facilitates submitting a request to Dental Wings support. The default destination for the.png files has been set in the desktop, but you can change it to the location of your choice. Define a custom save location User Preferences > User Preferences > Screenshot Output Folder. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 12 / 17
Attach Files Right from the moment you are creating it, attach a file to the order and both will be bounded together. From that moment on, the file will follow the order wherever it goes, making sure important complementary information accompanies the order throughout the end, until the prosthesis fabrication. Desktop icon Upon DWOS install, a shortcut is created on the desktop to launch the Wizard assistant. On the landing page, select the desired workflow 1. You are then guided throught every step to successfully complete your case, even on first experiences. 1. Double-click 2. Authenticate 3. Ready to use the assisted mode 1 With the release of DWOS the following restorations can be scanned and designed with the Wizard assistant: all prosthesis types of the crown & bridge module, bite splints, orthodontic models, and partials. 3Series Legacy scanners Scanning workflow with the Wizard assistant is now fully supported. Scanning with the assisted mode is no more limited to scan import. And with the outcome of the impression holder, 3Series 1st generation owners can scan impressions on seperate trays, triple-trays, and waxings. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 13 / 17
Implant Bars Some major reworks were made to the Implant bar design. The interface was simplified, the computing is faster and the results are optimized for manufacturing. Here are a few examples of noticeable improvements. Improved Initial Proposal For milled bars Before doing any editing, you will notice that the segments look more natural. Instead of straight segments joining the pillars, you will see smooth curves skimming the gingiva. That is because the milled bar path is computed according to the clinical arch that was defined in the scan station. For optimizing the initial proposal of milled bars you should take good care of the arch's path. To optimize, consider the following: The centre dot should be placed between the anteriors Both dots on the edges should be placed beyond the last molar Then, to flatten or accentuate the arch's curve, click and hold the dot at the tip of the line while scrolling with the mouse wheel. Clinical arch definition in the scan station You will reduce customizing time in the design step if you already have the bars in mind. The bar segments were computed in straight lines Automatic proposition of bars now follow the curve of the clinical arch Improved User Interface The designer menu cleared unnecessary information so as to make them easier to use. The Bar options window is divided in four tabs: Bar, Segment, Pillar, and Attachments. Under each one of them are displayed the related parameters. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 14 / 17
More Organic Shapes Our implant bar design tools already included adding attachments and spacer blocks from a library, automatic material compensation around (attachment) holes, and gingiva offset setting. They are now enhanced with rounding radius setting for milled bars, and automatic rounding of the junction between pillars and segments. All of these make your design production-ready in less time. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 15 / 17
Partial design Clasp damping The computing of the damping of clasps is now smoother. Use the minimum thickness field of the Clasp options window to determine the size of the narrowest part. The decreasing in size is even until it meets the minimal thickness value and is finished with a rounding. The reduction factor is automatically adjusted to the length of the clasp. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 16 / 17
Crown & bridge design Tool compensation A new parameter was added to material management to enable tool compensation1 on overlays. 1. When this box is checked, it means that the tool compensation is calculated by the CAD Engine. 2. The tool radius for the outer and the inner surfaces are independent and can be of different sizes. 3. When the distance is set to -1 the compensation can be applied anywhere on the restoration. When another value is set, the compensation can be applied only to this distance from the margin line. ex: if the Compensation distance is set to 2 (mm), only the first 2 mm above the margin line can be modified by the tool compensation function. Above that 2 (mm), the occlusal surfaces will remain untouched. 1 Tool compensation is a function that verifies that the shapes of the restoration can be milled with a milling tools that has the specified radius. If not, it will modify the surfaces to ensure that all shapes that you see can be milled with the required level of accuracy. The result of tool compensation are displayed upon recompute of the prosthesis. Dental Wings Inc. - Page 17 / 17
