About Keyboarding Pro DELUXE Online Keyboarding Pro DELUXE Online (KPDO) is a web-based instructional application that makes use of portals defined by the user type. Although the program is built as a single application, it presents itself differently depending upon the type of user logging in whether that s an instructor, a student, or a Cengage administrator. See Roles for more detailed information about how KPDO alters depending on the type of user. The Student Portal is the view students see to take their online course. It provides access to the lessons assigned for the particular course (Lessons 1-25, Beginning Keyboarding; Lessons 1-55, Beginning Keyboarding and Word Processing; and Lessons , Advanced Word Processing. The software is closely tied to the college keyboarding textbooks published by South-Western Educational Publishing. Lessons, skill building activities, assessments and reports are all dynamically generated based upon the lesson range of the course. IMPORTANT NOTE: Because KPDO is hosted on Cengage servers, the program cannot remain inactive on your screen for longer than 1 hour. If you time out, you will be notified with a caution dialog box and asked to log in again.

Understanding the KPDO Application Shell In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Heading 3 The User Interface (UI) for Keyboarding Pro DELUXE Online (KPDO) has been designed to provide easy navigation regardless of where you are in the program. This is your primary access to lessons, skill building activities, timed writings, and other activities. When the tabs are clicked, they open to display the menus. You can quickly check your progress in the course by seeing green check marks next to the activities you have already completed. Once a selection is made, the left nav menu will close, allowing you to view your selected activity in full screen.

Right Navigation Menus When you make a selection from the left navigation menu, such as a lesson, KPDO will open to the first activity within the lesson. The other activities associated with that specific lesson appear in the right drop down menu box so that you can navigate between different activities within a lesson without having to go back to the left navigation menu pane. When you have completed an activity, the menu option turns orange for a quick glance to see what activities you've already done.

The KPDO Work Area (Modal Window) The KPDO Modal Window is the area where all of your instruction takes place, whether it's keying drill lines or Timed Writings, watching the animations for learning the keys, watching other movies and presentations, looking at a report, or playing a game. When you click on a menu selection from any of the menus, the modal window will display the elements for that activity that are necessary to work in it or view it. For instance, if you are typing drill lines for a warm-up activity in a lesson, you'll see a screen such as the one below, with a boxed area that is split in half. The top half of the box is where you will see instructions and the first drill line, sentence, paragraph, or other exemplar text. The bottom half of the box is where you will key the drill line. You'll also see pictures and technique tips for improving your keying skills, and instructions across the keying window. Below are some examples of how the modal window changes with different types of activities.

Introduction to KPDO Lessons In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Heading 3 Keyboarding Pro DELUXE Online contains 110 lessons for learning the keyboard and word processing functions. You will learn not only the correct reaches for using the keyboard, but also how to sit properly and position your hands and body through animations and other interactive features. Games also appear in the lessons to provide a fun way to increase your skill and accuracy. Keyboarding courses are generally divided into three lesson range options: Lessons1-25 for learning new keys and practice; Lessons 1-55 for learning new keys, practicing, and beginning word processing learning; and Lessons for advanced word processing learning. A complete course includes Lessons 1-110, divided into Lessons 1-55 and on your SSO dashboard. Each lesson contains a variety of activities that will help you become proficient in keyboarding and word processing. For example: The alphabetical keys, numeric keys, symbols, special characters, numeric keypad, and all other functional keys are covered under 25 instructional lessons. The various key reaches and exercises covered under the particular set of lessons are reproduced as a combined set of activities under Review lessons for practice. The types of lessons include Regular Lessons, Regular lesson with production test as an activity, Check, Point Lessons and Final Tests. The screen shot below shows the Lessons menu for the Lessons 1-55 course.

Notes: A Check Point lesson is like any other lesson with two or more Word 2010 activities in it. The activities in a check point lesson can be done in any order. The Final Test lesson is similar to a regular lesson with a production test as an activity. However, the test is graded depending on the set weight % given by your instructor as part of the class set up. Using the Right Navigation Menu Each lesson enables a navigation menu on the right side of the screen that displays the activities associated with that particular lesson. Many lessons have similar activity types, but the activities can vary depending upon what is being taught in that lesson. A typical right navigation menu looks like this with the activities listed:

You have the option of either proceeding through each activity in sequence, or you may use this menu to navigate to different activities.

Lessons 1-25: Learning the Keys In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Remember that you can use the right navigation menu at the top right of your work area to navigate between different activities within a lesson. A typical Learn Key Lesson right navigation menu has the following activities: Warm Up Activity The Warm Up lesson activity provides you the opportunity to practice your keyboarding skills prior to learning new keys. Key each drill line once for practice and a second time for speed. The program shows your speed in GWAM after the second attempt.

You must key each line at an acceptable accuracy rate; otherwise, the program indicates that there are too many errors and asks you to repeat the line. KPDO uses the Line Check practice mode to display the drills in this lesson part. Notes: GWAM Calculation. Gross words a minute (GWAM) is a method for measuring the speed at which you key drill lines or paragraphs. Keying errors do not affect the GWAM rate. The calculation to compute the gross words a minute (GWAM) is: GWAM = (characterskeyed 5) minutes. The calculation assumes that the average word is five keystrokes long. Line Check. The line-check method to analyze drill material keyed for speed. The program analyzes your input after you tap ENTER. If you meet the accuracy requirement, your GWAM rate appears; otherwise, the program displays the "Too many errors" message. Depending on the Preferences setting, the BACKSPACE key may or may not be available while you use the line-check practice technique. Learn [New Key] Activity The Learn (key) activity reinforces proper keyboarding posture, identifies the location of the new key that you will be learning, shows you which finger to use, demonstrates the proper key reach, and lets you practice the new key reach. The animated character THE PROFESSOR will introduce each key reach in the Alphabetic Keyboarding Learn (key) tabs.

In addition, a realistic hand model demonstrates each key reach. This mode is ideal for new key learners or students who would like to review the key locations and key reach demonstrations. Drill lines are presented using the Lock-and-Flash practice technique. If you make a keying error, the software flashes the correct key and demonstrates the proper key reach. You must tap the correct key before you can continue.

Notes: The Lock-and-Flash technique is always used when you learn new keys. The BACKSPACE key is always disabled in this lesson part and does not appear in the work area regardless of the Preferences setting. If the Show Lesson movies option is enabled under general preferences then at the start of the activity you will be shown a model representing the keying postures and positions. Textbook Keying Activity Textbook Keying is an activity that lets you key in a section (paragraph or lines) from the textbook. This activity appears in most of the lessons. You can key the exercise at your own pace, since there is no timer associated with the activity. The results are displayed only when you have completed 90% or more of the activity When you click on the Textbook Keying option from the activity menu, you are prompted with the Instructions window. Click OK to continue. The exercise identifier and page number from the textbook are displayed at top of the keying area in the red instructions area. Turn to that page in your textbook and locate the activity referenced. You can start keying the data in the Keying area. Tap the ESC key from the keyboard or click the Stop button that appears at the bottom of the keying area to stop the activity. The Rate (GWAM) and Error results are displayed on completion of the activity. The Textbook Keying activity will be marked complete only when you key it without too many errors and jhave completed 90% or more of the drill lines in the exercise If the keyed in data is less than 90%, the message displayed reads "Please complete exercise. Repeat? Yes /No". If there are too many errors and if the keyed in data for the activity is less than 90%. then you are asked to do the activity again. The Print button is enabled in the bottom navigation bar only after you have keyed 90% of the drill line without Too many errors. If you simply start entering random keystrokes or start keying data which is different from the source data, an error dialog box will display with the message, "You do not appear to be keying from the correct source." Use the Print button to print out a copy of your work. Notes: GWAM Calculation. Gross words a minute (GWAM) is a method for measuring the speed at which you key drill lines or paragraphs. Keying errors do not affect the GWAM rate. The calculation to compute the gross words a minute (GWAM) is: GWAM = (characters keyed 5) minutes. The calculation assumes that the average word is five keystrokes long. While keying in the data, the first tap on the Esc key will stop the activity and display to the students the Errors/GWAM rate. The second tap on the Esc key will take the student back to

the lesson menu screen. Accuracy rate and backspace allowed status can be set by the instructor. Student is allowed to change the backspace status using the Edit Preferences option from the Student Edit screen. On completion of the exercise the student is given an option of repeating the same exercise again. Every repeat overwrites the previous attempt of the activity. Improve Keystroking Activity The Improve Keystroking activity helps you practice specific key reaches and techniques. The number of drill lines displayed in the activity varies from lesson to lesson. The drill lines are displayed in Word Lock mode. Notes: Word Lock. Word-lock is an instructional technique that reinforces specific reaches or techniques. Using this method, the program displays the entire drill line and then checks each letter, digit, or symbol as you key it. If you make an error, the program erases the whole word or word group so that you can key it again. The program requires that you key the first character of each word correctly. You may attempt each word up to three times. After three tries, the program displays the last incorrect attempt and moves on to the next word. The

BACKSPACE key is never available while you key drill lines using this mode. Build Skill Activity The Build Skill lesson part emphasizes on increasing your keying speed. 1. The activity presents drill lines for you to key using the line-check practice mode. If you meet the accuracy requirement, the application shows your actual rate (orange) and the goal rate (yellow) in the upper right corner of the work area. The goal rate is set at two GWAM higher than your actual rate. 2. The activity challenges you to key the same line at or above the goal rate (yellow). If you meet or exceed the goal, your new rate appears in green. Otherwise, the program displays your GWAM in red and asks if you want to try again to reach the goal rate. Click Yes to continue or No to get the next set of data to be keyed in.

If you key too many errors, the program does not display your speed. Rather, it instructs you to key the line again. If the second attempt also has too many errors, the program presents the next drill line. Divider marks may appear in some drill lines. The dividers identify word groups that should be keyed together as a unit. The data to be keyed in the work area is presented in two formats either as sentences or as paragraphs. To view the original data and the student keyed in data, click on the Lesson report option and then click the Print button to print the report page. For the Build Skill activity, the application records the following information to be displayed in the lesson report. Average speed: Drill lines must meet or exceed the accuracy requirement to be included in the average-speed calculation Fastest speed: The fastest speed is based on all of the drill lines in this part Drill lines: The program stores the last attempt for each drill line in the lesson part Date completed: The date of completion of the activity is displayed Notes: Line Check. The line-check method to analyze drill material keyed for speed. The program analyzes your input after you tap ENTER. If you meet the accuracy requirement, your GWAM rate appears; otherwise, the program displays the "Too many errors" message. Depending on the Preferences setting, the BACKSPACE key may or may not be available while you use

the line-check practice technique. GWAM Calculation. The indicator in the lower left corner of the work area shows the status of the BACKSPACE key. Only the most recent keying information is saved if you complete the lesson part more than once.

Basic Navigation and Helpful Hints In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Heading 3 Because KPDO is a web-based program, it has been designed to conform with best industry practices and accessibility requirements for web programs. The following terms are used throughout the Help information to reference the behaviors of screens, buttons, panes, and other components when different actions are taken. It is important to understand the various states KPDO goes into when certain functions are performed. For instance, when a dialog box requiring a response from you opens up, the the KPDO workspace screen is frozen until you take action. Then the KPDO workspace becomes active again. KPDO uses color to alert you to different screen states as well - for instance, the orange color is an additional indicator of an active element. Active: The screen or part of the screen is active when the cursor can act on buttons or other elements, or text can be entered into the screen. A lesson activity, when opened, is active when the student begins his/her work. Inactive : The screen or part of the screen has been frozen so that another activity can take place on top of it. For example, when a dialog box appears, it is the active part, and the KPDO screen behind it is grayed out or inactive. Enabled : Buttons, icons, tabs, and other navigational elements are enabled or disabled based on their role relevant to what is appearing on the screen. For example, if a button appears in blue or orange colors and solid background, it is enabled. Disabled : Buttons, icons, tabs, and other navigation elements may not be active for a particular activity or dialog box. For example, a Next button may appear grayed out until a student or class has been selected. This merely means that a selection must be made in order for the button to work. Some tabs, like the Word Processor tab in the top navigation bar can be permanently disabled in the Instructor view, but enabled in the Student view. Dynamic : Elements on the screen that change based upon the current information and state of the screen. The UI has been been designed to intelligently display or not display information based upon such variables as Lesson Range, Skill Building Mode, diagnostics, and other variables. Static: Elements on the screen that never change, regardless of where you are in the program. An example would be the Keyboarding Pro DELUXE Online product name in the top left of the screen. This element always appears, and always links to the Instructor Welcome informational page. Menu Panes/Tabs Left Navigation Menus/Tabs: The KPDO shell uses left side panes with tabs for the high level menu options in KPDO. They open and close with mouse clicks or activating some other part of the KPDO program screen. Right Navigation Drop Down Menus: Because Lessons, Skill Building, and References have multiple activities associated with specific learning objectives, those activities are listed on the

right side of the screen in a drop down menu. The menu selection is dynamically generated based upon the specific activities relevant to that particular lesson or module. The menus contain screen indicators that will also tell you where you are in your course and what lessons and activities have been completed. Green check marks in the left navigation menu indicate that you have done all of the activities in the lesson. The right navigation menu shows completed activities highlighted in orange color. Navigation and Function Buttons There are two types of buttons used within KPDO: those that allow you to navigate between menus, screens, pop-up dialog boxes and so forth (Navigational) and those that allow you to perform certain functions within an activity (Functional). Below is a brief explanation of some of the more commonly used buttons and how they work. Every effort has been made to ensure that all buttons are clearly relevant to the task at hand, so that they provide an intuitive, easy way for you to decide what to do or where to go next. For details on how to navigate the WORD 2010 activities, which have their own navigation and function buttons as part of the WORD Add-In Ribbon, see the Help section on WORD 2010 Activities. Navigation Buttons The most commonly used navigation buttons appear at bottom of the KPDO Shell. which are either

disabled or enabled based upon the kind of activity or screen you're viewing. BACK: this button will navigate you to the previous screen or activity within a lesson. PRINT: this button will format the screen for printing and open the Windows operating system print dialog box. HELP: this button will take you to the contextual help page for the activity/screen you are currently viewing. REPORT: this button will open up the Report screen associated with the activity you are currently viewing. NEXT: this button will navigate you to the next screen or activity within a lesson. IMPORTANT NOTE: the BACK and NEXT buttons only move you through the menu items on a single left navigation tab or right navigation menu. They will not navigate you from one left navigation tab to another. Function Buttons Functional buttons appear in screens and dialog boxes, and are generally intended to give you directions for the next step, submit a completed activity, or confirm an action you've initiated (e.g., hitting the ESC key to end an activity before the timer has timed out). Typical functional buttons are: / YES and NO buttons: These buttons allow you to choose between actions, such as continuing to another activity. ENTER : Used to finalize an action you have been requested to do. Close: Used primarily for closing dialog boxes. Done: Indicates you have completed the function. Generate : This button is used for reports where you must make lesson number or other selections first. Screen Font Size Controls A new feature to KPDO is the ability to increase or decrease the screen font size using buttons that appear in the keying area. These buttons appear at the bottom of each on-screen activity. They do not appear in WORD 2010 activities, but WORD also has many tools for accessibility that can be used.

Dialog Boxes Dialog boxes perform different functions within KPDO. They can be cautionary, instructional, or confirming. You will also use dialog boxes to select activity settings for a particular activity that you are currently working on, such as for Timed Writings. The dialog boxes appear in front of the main screen, which becomes inactive, and require either a Close, Save, Yes/No, or OK response from you. Example: Instructional Dialog Box Examples: Warning/Caution Dialog Box Example: Timed Writing Settings Dialog Box

What Your Instructor Sees Keyboarding Pro DELUXE Online (KPDO) is a single web application that provides different views based upon the type of user logging in. As a student, you will see all of the features and functions of the instructional software, from lessons to timed writings to skill building practice to working inside Microsoft WORD. In addition, KPDO provides a rich error analysis and reporting system that allows you to identify specific areas where more practice will help you become more efficient. Your instructor can view most of your work through the Instructor portal, including all of your timed writings and WORD documents. They do not see the warm up or practice drill lines, but they do see the final results you have achieved through their utilities and reports. If you experience a problem with KPDO, your instructor may be able to provide the fastest assistance by toggling to your student record and working through your issue with you. Your instructor cannot change any of your work or save any new work to your file, but can see whether the issue is software- or user-related. It is highly recommended that you first contact your instructor in the event of a problem with the software, because quite often, it is the fastest, easiest way to get going again.

Warm Up Activity The Warm Up lesson activity provides you the opportunity to practice your keyboarding skills prior to learning new keys. The calculation to compute the gross words a minute (GWAM) is: GWAM = (characters keyed 5) minutes. The calculation assumes that the average word is five keystrokes long.

Learn New Key Activity The Learn (key) activity reinforces proper keyboarding posture, identifies the location of the new key that you will be learning, shows you which finger to use, demonstrates the proper key reach, and lets you practice the new key reach.

Textbook Keying Activity Textbook Keying is an activity that lets you key in a section (paragraph or lines) from your textbook. This activity appears in most of the lessons. You can key the exercise at your own pace, since there is no timer associated with the activity. The results are displayed only when you have completed 90% or more of the activity. 1. When you click on the Textbook Keying option from the activity menu, you are prompted with the Instructions window. Click Close to continue. 2. The exercise identifier and page number from the textbook are displayed at top of the keying area in the red instructions area. Turn to that page in your textbook and locate the activity referenced. You can start keying the data in the Keying area.

3. The Stop button will appear on the screen when you begin to key the activity. Click the Stop button that appears at the bottom of the keying area to stop the activity.

4. The Rate (GWAM) and Error results are displayed on completion of the activity.

The Textbook Keying activity will be marked complete only when you key it without too many errors and have completed 90% or more of the drill lines in the exercise If the keyed-in data is less than 90%, the message displayed reads "Please complete exercise. Repeat? Yes /No". If there are too many errors and if the keyed-in data for the activity is less than 90%. then you are asked to do the activity again. The Print button is enabled in the bottom navigation bar only after you have keyed 90% of the drill line without "Too many errors." If you simply start entering random keystrokes or start keying data which is different from the source data, an error dialog box will display with the message, "You do not appear to be keying from the correct source." Use the Print button to print out a copy of your work.

While keying in the data, the first tap on the ESC key will stop the activity and display your Errors/GWAM rate. The second tap on the ESC key will stop the activity and open the left navigation menu pane. Accuracy rate and Backspace allowed status can be set by the instructor. You can change the backspace status using the Preferences button unless your instructor has locked it in the Instructor Utilities.. On completion of the exercise, you are given an option of repeating the same exercise again. Every repeat overwrites the previous attempt of the activity.

Improve Keystroking Activity Improve Keystroking Activity The Improve Keystroking activity helps you practice specific key reaches and techniques. The BACKSPACE key is never available while you key drill lines using this mode.

Build Skill Activity The Build Skill lesson activity emphasizes increasing your keying speed.

To view the original data and your keyed-in data, click on the Lesson Report menu option in the right navigation pane. click the Print button to print the report page. If you meet the accuracy requirement, your GWAM

rate appears; otherwise, the program displays the "Too many errors" message. Depending on the Preferences setting, the BACKSPACE key may or may not be available while you use the line-check practice technique. GWAM Calculation. Gross words a minute (GWAM) is a method for measuring the speed at which you key drill lines or paragraphs. Keying errors do not affect the GWAM rate. The calculation to compute the gross words a minute (GWAM) is: GWAM = (characters keyed 5) # of minutes. The calculation assumes that the average word is five keystrokes long. The indicator in the lower left corner of the work area shows the status of the BACKSPACE key. Only the most recent keying information is saved if you complete the lesson part more than once.

Timed Writing Activity Timed writing activities are designed to help you improve your keyboarding skills by setting time limits and encouraging you to always increase your skills and accuracy. They appear both within the lesson activity sequences and as stand-alone exercises. To take a timed writing, follow these steps: 1. Click on the Timed Writing activity within the lessons. 2. The Timed Writing settings window will appear Select the timed writing length required. Your choices are 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes. Select from the General Settings how you'd like to have the Timed Writing display the timing status. Your options are:

a. b. c. Select the Show time remaining check box to display the count down timer during the activity. Select the Beep every 15 seconds check box to alert you with a sound sdoutput once in 15 seconds for the regular time period set. Select the Flash every 15 seconds option to alert you with a visual output every 15 seconds. The timed writings are available only in accuracy mode for lessons 1-25, whereas from lesson 26 onwards there is an option available from where you can choose the mode of timed writing either speed mode or accuracy mode. The student can also choose the entire writing available or a part of the writing from the source module for keying. Refer window. After enabling the required options, click OK The Timed Writing window will open. Instructions for the exercise number and page in the textbook for the Timed Writing are displayed in the red instructions bar. Make sure your book is open to the correct exercise before you begin to key. 8. KPDO automatically checks the first 40 characters to make sure you are keying from the correct source document. If you key in data that is different from the specified exercise, KPDO displays an Error dialog box with this message: "You do not appear to be keying from the correct source." Click the Close button to restart the timed writing activity.

9. There is also a "continuous character" check that occurs for the first 25 characters. If you key a word with more than 24 characters in it, the whole word will be wiped out on the 25th character key stroke, and you will be required to key in the word all over again. The timer, however, will not stop. This will automatically lower your GWAM rate. 10. When the timer has counted down to 0:00, a message box pops up with the results of the Timed Writing. When you click the Close button, you will see any errors are highlighted/marked and your GWAM rate, number of errors, and Accuracy rate percentage reported out. You have the option to repeat the timed writing or continue to another activity.

You can make two attempts to do the timed writing activity. The results are displayed for both the attempts. If your second attempt results are than your first attempt, KPDO will save the results without prompting you. However, if previous first attempt results are better than the current one the application will display a message to student stating that the first attempt was better and ask if the student would like to save the first attempt. Click the ESC key or the Back] button to stop the activity before the time elapses. On completion of the time length the following options are available to the student, a Print icon to print the report, Practice Errors (Hyperlink to 9.5) option - if the writing has been completed with errors or too many error and Error Diagnostic(Hyperlink to 9.4) option if the error diagnostic has been turned on and the writing done with errors.

Notes: The Instructor-Set Preferences (Hyperlink to 9.2) settings can be set by the instructor for the following options Errors per Minute, Display Grade and Backspace allowed. The best three or best five writings displayed for a particular student considers all the timed wrings activity taken by the student both inside and outside the lessons. The best writings displays the activity which is keyed within the error tolerance limit. Writings with too many errors are not taken into consideration for Best 3 or 5 writings. The last 40 writings display the last 40 timed writings taken up by the student, which includes the writings completed with too many errors and also the writings completed within error tolerance limit. If the student has keyed in with no errors then the Practice Error and Error Diagnostic button will not appear. Error diagnostics option appears only if it is enabled and this option is not available for classes with lesson range 1-25.

Timed Writing Activities with Diagnostics and Speed/Accuracy Mode In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Heading 3 Timed Writing activities for Lessons have different features from the Timed Writings available in Lessons By the time you reach Lesson 26, you will have acquired good touch-typing skills, so now it's time for you to apply that skill to longer writings and documents. Again, you will be timed during the Timed Writings, for periods of 1 minutes, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, or 5 minutes. In addition, there are some new features introduced in these Timed Writings. First, you are now working in either Speed or Accuracy mode. Lessons 1-25 Timed Writings are only available in Accuracy mode; you now can select which mode you prefer to work in. Second, Diagnostics routines will now be applied to your work if your instructor has selected the Diagnostics tracking option in Preferences. When you are keying a Timed Writing exercise in Speed mode, KPDO reports on your number of errors and GWAM rate. When you are keying in Accuracy mode, KPDO reports on your GWAM, number of errors, and accuracy percentage. Diagnostics are report-outs of what kinds of errors you are making, and will provide additional drill lines and instructions for improving your keying ability in a specific area such as double striking characters, transposing characters, using the wrong reach, and more. Finally, if you make errors completing a Timed Writing, two buttons appear with exercises based on the errors you've made - Practice Errors and Error Diagnostics. You have two opportunities to work on any Timed Writing, which are called First Attempt and Second Attempt in the reports. You may repeat First or Second Attempts, and have the option of saving the best results. Nor are you forced to make a second attempt - you will always be prompted to continue or not. To take a Timed Writing in Lessons , follow these steps: Timed Writing First Attempt 1. Click on the Timed Writing activity within the lesson right navigation menu.

2. The Timed Writing Settings dialog box will appear.

You now need to make selections for how you want to take the Timed Writing. Your instructor and the book may give you specific Timed Writing instructions for a particular exercise, or you may choose the features you want. 1. Select the Timing Length required: 1 minutes, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, or 5 minutes. 2. Select the Source settings. With longer Timed Writings, you have the options of doing the entire writing or single paragraphs. 3. In the General pane, you have the following options: a. Select the Show time remaining check box to display the count down timer while you're keying the exercise. b. Select the Beep every 15 seconds check box to have the timer make a sound every 15 seconds while you're keying the exercise. c. Select the Flash every 15 seconds option to have the timer flash from white to red every 15 seconds. d. Select the Mode you wish to work in: Accuracy or Speed. 4. After enabling the required options, click OK. 5. The Timed Writing work area will open with the page number and Timed Writing activity number displayed in the instructions bar. Open your book to the referenced page and make sure you are positioned correctly at the keyboard before you begin to key the text. The counter starts the countdown when you tap the first keystroke.

KPDO checks the first 40 characters you key to make sure you are using the correct source writing. If not, an error message box will appear saying, "You do not appear to be keying from the correct source." When you click OK, the program will erase the existing keystrokes and allow you to start over. KPDO also performs a character count check on the first 24 keystrokes. This prevents you from pressing on a key to repeat it. If 25 characters are keyed successively, KPDO will erase the characters and put the cursor back at the start of the line. When the counter reaches 0:00, the screen will freeze, and your Timed Writing Results will be displayed in a dialog box. 9. You can either take the timed writing again, click on one of the Practice buttons, or navigate to another lesson or activity.

Taking the Timed Writing a Second Time (Second Attempt) If you choose to take the timed writing again, you will return to the Timed Writing work area. After you have completed the second attempt, your results will be reported in a dialog box. When you click the Close button, another dialog message displays with the results of your current attempt and previous attempt. KPDO will ask you if you want to save the current or the previous timed writing results. This choice is what will be displayed in the Timed Writing Reports. (See Notes at the bottom of this page.) Practice Errors and Error Diagnostics If you have made errors while keying the timed writing, two buttons appear in the bottom right of the screen: Practice Errors and Errors Diagnostics.

Practice Errors For each error word, the program lets you practice the word that precedes it, the error word itself, and the word that follows. Follow the steps below to start the Practice Errors activity: 1. Click the Practice Error button. A work area template will display. Note that the error type is displayed at the top.

For each error word, the program lets you practice the word that precedes it, the error word itself, and the word that follows. These are simply repetitive drill lines to practice the strokes and reaches. Therefore, information such as GWAM and errors is not reported. The drill lines should be keyed three times each. The practice uses the Word-Lock technique, so you have three opportunities to key the phrase correctly before moving to the next error round. Skip and Stop options are available. Click the Skip button to move on to the next error drill. Click Stop to go back to the timed writing main menu for other options. Notes: Not every error word is presented for practice. Sometimes a single lapse in concentration can result in a string of errors. In these instances, all the error words in the group will be omitted from practice. Generally, the error words practiced are single, isolated words or small groups. Error Diagnostics The Error Diagnostic s functionality is enabled after you have keyed a Timed Writing Second Attempt. When you click on the Error Diagnostics button, the following report is displayed on screen:

1. You use this report to identify what errors types you are most commonly making, such as missing adjacent keys, transposing letters, and adding extra words. When you have studied the error types, you may practice improving your skill by clicking Practice Diagnostics. An exercise will be displayed for each of the error types identified in the report.

2. 3. When you complete each practice line twice, you will be taken to the next practice drill associated with the Error Diagnostics report. You may skip any of the practice drills by clicking the Skip button, or exit the Error Diagnostics Practice by clicking Stop. Notes: The Best Timed Writings Report considers all of the timed writings you have done both within and outside of lessons. Your instructor chooses whether the report displays your best 3 or best 5 writings. The best timed writings are those which have been keyed at the fastest speeds within the error tolerance limit set by your instructor. Writings with too many errors are not taken into consideration for Best 3 or 5 writings. The Last 40 Timed Writings Report displays the last 40 timed writings you have taken, including those with too many errors. So it is a different report from the Best Timed Writings report, which only displays those timed writings that were within the error tolerance limit. If you keyed a timed writing with no errors, then the Practice Error and Error Diagnostic button will not appear.

Introduction to Word Processing Lessons

WORD 2010 Activities (Lessons ) In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 The KPDO software is integrated with the copy of Microsoft WORD 2010 that resides on your computer. It adds a special KPDO Student tool bar (called an Add-In) to your WORD software that permits sophisticated checking routines, while tracking your time on task and error diagnostics. There are two types of WORD activities available in KPDO: Checked and Unchecked Document activities. You can identify which type of document you are working with by looking at the WORD icon next to the activity name in the right navigation menu: Checked : created. Unchecked : created. the document is checked for errors and the document analysis report is the document is not checked for errors, and a simple summary report is IMPORTANT : When you open a document in WORD using KPDO, you must exit the document using the KPDO Add-In Toolbar. Otherwise, your work will not be saved or reported correctly. Before You Begin The following directions lead you through a typical WORD 2010 activity. KPDO allows multiple attempts to create and edit documents, and tracks them for you. Two key concepts for working with the WORD 2010 activities are: Edits: This represents the number of times you have edited a specific version of a document. Each time that you reopen a document, the Edit count increases by one. The number of edits is reported through the WORD 2010 Documents Report. Passes : This represents the number of times you have started over with a document activity. If you decide that you need to begin a new "pass" with a document you have already created once, KPDO will remind you that it is a new pass. The number of passes you create for a specific activity is also reported through the WORD 2010 Documents Report. Each time you start a WORD Activity, you will be presented with options for setting up the activity. These options are: Begin new document. This will either start a new word document or, if you have already done this activity before, start a new Pass. Open existing document: You open a document you've previously saved. This counts as an Edit. Print document without error report Print document with error report The last three options are only available after you have completed the first pass of a document.

Begin New Document Select Begin New Document and click OK You are prompted with the Document Instructions dialog box. This dialog reminds you of what the Add-In Toolbar buttons do, and reminds you about how to exit the document. Click Start. 3. WORD 2010 will be opened by KPDO.

4. A dialog box showing the document textbook page and exercise number to be keyed displays. 5. WORD opens with the KPDO Student Add-In Ribbon open. This ribbon is only viewable when KPDO launches WORD. The tool bar has the following four buttons:

SAVE AND CLOSE: Click this to end the WORD activity and exit WORD correctly. You will be returned to the KPDO browser window. CHECK DOCUMENT: Click this when you have finished the activity and are ready for KPDO to run the error analysis routine on it. This generates the report that displays the GWAM and errors (if any) you have achieved. INFORMATION: Click this to view the exercise details. HELP: Click this to view the context sensitive Help File for the WORD activity. Important Things to Know: In order to run the Check routine, you must have completed a minimum of 90% of the total activity. If you have not achieved 90% completion, an error message will display saying, "You have not completed the document. What would you like to do?" You have two options: Save & Exit or Return to Document. If you select Return to Document, you will be returned to the point where you ended your work. The timer will continue with your first keystroke. If you have completed 90% of the document, keystroking and formatting errors are identified using the error analysis functions. The checked document that is displayed is the report.

Reviewing the Checked Document Error Analysis Report 1. The report is presented in a non-editable document with the errors highlighted and the Checked Document ribbon with four buttons is now displayed. 2. Click the ERROR DETAILS button to view the list of errors. Click the INFORMATION button for activity identification information. Click the CLOSE button to close the activity and go back to the lesson menu. Click the HELP button to see contextual help about WORD activities. KPDO will only store the latest three edits for the latest pass of any WORD activity. Therefore, if you make two or more passes at the document, KPDO will only report on the most recent pass. If you have made more than three attempts to edit the WORD activity, only the latest three will be reported. The following information is reported in the WORD 2010 Documents Report. Completion date

Introduction to Skill Building Lessons In addition to teaching keyboarding and word processing skills, KPDO provides ample opportunities to increase your efficiency and productivity while keying with the Skill Building Lessons. These lessons present different activities that focus on key areas such as sentences and paragraphs. The Skill Building Lessons are organized by: Accuracy Emphasis (Mode): All activities done within these lessons give weight to accuracy rather than speed. Speed Emphasis (Mode): All activities done within these lessons give weight to speed rather than accuracy. Quick Review: The Quick Review section presents drill lines for you to key using the linecheck practice mode. Technique Builder: This skill building activity lets you practice exercises without any time limit. Drill Practice: The Drill Practice section presents three drills for you to key using the linecheck practice mode. Note: 1. Line Check Practice Mode. The line-check method to analyze drill material keyed for speed. The program analyzes your input after you tap ENTER. If you meet the accuracy requirement, your GWAM rate appears; otherwise, the program displays the "Too many errors" message. Depending on your Preferences setting, the BACKSPACE key may or may not be available while you use the line-check practice technique.

Assessment Activity Assessment is available as an activity only under the Skill Building lessons. The assessment is intended to use your test results to analyze the kinds of errors you made and recommend which mode would help you most: Accuracy or Speed. There are a total of five assessment lessons. To take the Skill Building Assessment, follow these steps: 1. From the left navigation pane, click the Skill Building tab. Then click on the Accuracy Emphasis submenu. Select Assessment 1 from the menu. 2. An instructional dialog box will display. Click the Close button.

Keyboard Mastery Activity The Keyboard Mastery activity provides a four-line warm-up. KPDO presents the first drill line using the Word Lock practice mode. The second drill line uses the Word Flash practice mode. The last two lines use the Line Check practice mode. The BACKSPACE key is not available when you key the first two lines, but may be available for the last two lines depending on the class or your student Preferences settings. Notes: 1. Word Lock. The BACKSPACE key is never available while you key drill lines using this mode. 2. Word Flash. The word-flash practice method reinforces specific reaches or techniques. Using this instructional technique, the program displays one word at a time and then checks each letter, digit, or symbol as you key it. If you make an error, the program erases the whole word so that you can key it again. The program requires that you key the

3. first letter of each word correctly. You may attempt each word up to three times. After three tries, the program displays the last incorrect attempt and moves on to the next word. The BACKSPACE key is never available while you key drill lines using this mode.

Improve Technique Activity The Improve Technique activity provides practice on specific reaches and techniques. KPDO presents the drill lines using the Word Lock practice mode. This lesson part usually includes six drill lines. Divider marks may appear in some drill lines. The dividers identify word groups that should be keyed together as a unit. Technique hints and photos provide tips that help you improve your keyboarding skill. Notes: 1. Word Lock. The BACKSPACE key is never available while you key drill lines using this mode. 2. The presentation of the drill lines in this lesson part is not affected by the speed or accuracy focus.

Sentences Activity Accuracy With accuracy as focus, the Sentences lesson part provides practice for improving control on repeated copy. To improve your control, you key a one-line sentence for a fixed time period (30 seconds or one minute). Key the sentence at a brisk pace (not your fastest speed) but within the error allowance limit set. When the time has elapsed, the program displays your speed, identifies the number of errors, and highlights the errors If the errors made exceeds the error allowance limit set in the class preferences, then the application displays the "Too many errors" message. If the errors made is equal to or fewer than the error allowance limit, the application challenges you to key the sentences again with even fewer errors. If you key the sentence with no errors, the application asks if you want to "Try for 0 errors" at or above the GWAM rate. You can repeat each sentence an unlimited number of times. This activity part includes four sentences.

Speed With the focus set to speed, sentences provides practice for increasing speed on repeated copy. To establish a base keying rate, you must key a one-line sentence as many times as possible in a fixed time period (30 seconds or one minute). Then, if your work is acceptably correct, the program challenges you to increase your speed by two GWAM for the same sentence. When you meet the goal, the application sets a new goal at two GWAM higher than the rate you just keyed. You can continue trying to meet goals on a sentence as many times as you want. The application displays your initial rate for a sentence in orange. Then, the goal rate is shown in yellow. If you meet your goal, the rate is shown in green; otherwise, it appears in red. When you choose to go on to the next sentence, the application computes the average speed for the preceding sentence and uses that average as the initial GWAM goal for the new sentence. The program applies this same procedure to each of the remaining sentences in this part. Notes: 1. You may enable or disable the BACKSPACE key for Sentences with a speed focus. 2. The BACKSPACE key is always turned off regardless of the setting when the focus is set to accuracy. 3. During the error analysis, the program assumes a maximum of one error per incorrect word. 4. The application assigns two additional game chances each time you meet the goal on a sentence.

Paragraphs Activity Accuracy The Paragraphs activity provides practice for increasing Accuracy on longer copy. 1. When you click on Paragraphs under Select Activity you are prompted with the Instructions dialog box, click Ok. The usage of tab key at the beginning of the paragraph is required, do not tap enter until you complete the paragraph, as the activity automatically word wraps on pressing Enter. 2. The instructor can set the error allowance limit by altering the Instructor-Set Preferences (Hyperlink to 9.2) settings. 3. On completion of the activity, the rate is displayed in terms of GWAM and CWAM. The errors made are highlighted with the help of error analysis (Hyperlink to 9.1), number of errors are also displayed. 4. If the errors made crosses the error allowance limit, then the program displays the "Too many errors" message. 5. If the errors made is equal to the error allowance limit or below that then the application challenges you to increase your CWAM rate by two for the same paragraph. If you reach the goal, the program increases the CWAM goal again and asks if you want to repeat the paragraph. You can repeat each paragraph an unlimited number of times. 6. Initially the program displays the parameters for rate (GWAM) and errors in yellow, and for rate (CWAM) in orange. Then, the goal rate is shown in yellow. If you meet your goal, the CWAM rate is shown in green; otherwise, it appears in red. Note: CWAM Calculations. Correct words a minute (CWAM) is a method for measuring the speed at which you key drill lines or paragraphs. The calculation to compute the correct word a minute (CWAM) is: CWAM = [(characters keyed 5) - ( errors * 2)] minutes. The calculation assumes that the average word is five keystrokes long. Speed The Paragraphs activity provides practice for increasing speed on longer copy. 1. When you click on Paragraphs under Select Activity you are prompted with the Instructions dialog box, click Ok. 2. To establish a base keying rate, you must key as much of a paragraph as possible in one minute. (If you finish the paragraph before the time has elapsed, tap ENTER to complete the speed drill.) If your work is acceptably accurate, the program challenges you to increase your speed by two GWAM for the same paragraph. When you meet the goal, the program sets a new goal two GWAM higher than the rate you just keyed. You can continue trying to meet goals on a paragraph as many times as you want. 3. The application displays your initial rate for a paragraph in orange. Then, the goal rate is shown in yellow. If you meet your goal, the rate is shown in green; otherwise, it appears in red. 4. To help you meet intermediate speed goals, a pacing marker is displayed in the paragraph after you set your base rate. Try to reach each pacing mark before it moves. The application places the pacing marks in the copy based on your goal divided at 15-second intervals. Depending on your goal, you may not see all four of the pacing marks.

Note: The BACKSPACE key is always enabled irrespective of the preference settings when the focus is set to accuracy. During the error analysis, the program assumes a maximum of one error per incorrect word. The application assigns two additional game chances each time you meet the goal for a paragraph. Maximum game chances allowed is 99 (Once the student attains 98 points, on completion of the next activity the application assigns only one point to make it 99).

Measurement Activity The Measurement activity lets you practice speed and control. For this activity, which is the same regardless of the focus, you key two paragraphs a maximum of two times each. The application gives you two minutes to key the paragraphs within the error allowance limit set accordingly by the instructor Error allowance limits are set by your instructor in the Class Preferences. On completion of the activity, the rate is displayed in terms of GWAM and CWAM. The errors are highlighted and number of errors is displayed. If the errors made exceeds the error allowance limit, then the program displays the "Too many errors" message. If the errors made are equal to or fewer than the error allowance limit, KPDO challenges you to increase your CWAM rate by two for the same paragraph. If you reach the goal, the CWAM goal increases again and asks if you want to repeat the paragraph. You can repeat each paragraph an unlimited number of times. After the completion of the activity, the data keyed in is checked and the results are displayed. The application displays the accuracy percentage (correct words total words), errors and rate (GWAM). If you key the Measurement activity only once, the application records the same information for both the fastest speed and fewest errors as shown on the Lesson Report. When you print a Lesson Report, the text for the most recent Measurement you keyed appears on the report along with the other information. Notes: 1. GWAM Calculation. Gross words a minute (GWAM) is a method for measuring the speed at which you key drill lines or paragraphs. Keying errors do not affect the GWAM rate. The calculation to compute the gross words a minute (GWAM) is: GWAM = (characters keyed 5) minutes. The calculation assumes that the average word is five keystrokes long. 2. CWAM Calculations. 3. You can enable or disable the BACKSPACE key for the Measurement activity. 4. Tap ENTER after you complete the first paragraph to display the next paragraph. The program will allow you to key each paragraph two times for a total of four paragraphs. When you tap ENTER after the fourth paragraph, the program stops the timer and computes your GWAM.

Earning Game Time To earn the maximum amount of game time, you must key each drill line at or above your GWAM goal with 100% accuracy. Keying below your GWAM goal, or with errors, will earn you less time. The GWAM goal for a game equals 90% of the average speed that you attained in the Numeric Keyboarding Build Skill lesson parts (Lessons 14-25). It is set by your instructor's preferences if you did not complete a Build Skill activity. Always key each line as quickly and accurately as possible. Be sure to tap ENTER at the end of a drill line. If you key a word incorrectly or do not meet your GWAM goal, you will earn less game time. For each drill line, you must achieve an acceptable accuracy rate. If you do not meet the accuracy goal, the program will not report your GWAM and it will not include your rate for that drill line in the average speed or fastest speed calculations. As you complete the drill lines, game pieces are revealed. After all drill lines are complete, tap ENTER to complete the game board and begin the game. The count-down timer begins as soon as you tap ENTER. Playing the Game The object of Connect-It is to clear the game board before time runs out. To do so, make pairs of

images disappear by clicking matching images that can be connected with a straight line using 2 or fewer right angles. Clear a path between matching diagonal images to link them. Look for matching images along the outside of the grid. Points are earned for each pair of images that you clear. Bonus points are awarded for each second that remains when you clear the board. Levels The level at which you will be allowed to play the game is the last highest level attained while playing Connect-It within the lessons. You cannot advance levels when you play Connect-It from here. Earning Points When you play Connect It, you earn 100 points for each pair of images that you clear. In addition, you earn 50 points for each second that remains when you clear the board. Game Over The game ends when you clear the game board or when time runs out. The program displays your total score, fastest speed, average speed, and goal speed. Notes: 1. The BACKSPACE preference (on or off) for Lessons also applies to the Connect-It game available from the Games Menu.

Key-A-Shot Game In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Heading 3 The objective of the Key-A-Shot game is to shoot as many balls as you can through the hoop by keying quickly and accurately. Points are earned for each shot you make. Beginning a New Game The GWAM goal for a game is approximately 90% of the average speed that you attained in the Build Skill lesson activity. The goal could be determined by your instructor's class settings if you have not completed the Build Skill activity. The number of drills that are presented in each game is also set by your instructor. If enabled, this game appears in the right navigation menu for the Lessons part of KPDO. When you access a game through a Lesson, only those keys that you've learned already will be used in the drill lines that are displayed. You may also access the Key-A-Shot game through the Games tab in the left navigation menu. If you play the game through the Games tab, all keys are used in the drill lines.

When you click on the Game/Game Name menu option, the game will display in the modal window. A pop-up dialog box will give you the game instructions. Click the Enter button or tap the ENTER key to begin the game.

Game Play and Scoring The game will open with the first drill line displayed. The score area to the right of the screen shows the following information: Score Best Score GWAM Rate GWAM Goal As you play the game, a basketball is shot toward the hoop each time you key a word correctly. If you key the word at or above your GWAM goal, you will make the shot and earn two points. If you key a word below your GWAM goal or inconsistently, you will miss the shot. Always key each drill line as quickly and accurately as possible. Be sure to tap the ENTER key at the end of each drill line. If you make too many errors in a drill line, your GWAM rate will not be included in your final results.

Delayed vs. Real-Time Mode You can play the game in delayed mode or in real-time mode - the setting appears in your Preferences options. In delayed mode, the action occurs after you key the entire drill line and tap ENTER. Then, a ball is shot toward the hoop for each word that you keyed correctly. If you successfully keyed each word above your GWAM goal, you will make all of the shots and earn bonus points. If you keyed below your GWAM goal or inconsistently, you will miss some or all of your shots. Playing the game in real-time mode can be more challenging because it forces you to focus on each drill line. As soon as you key a word correctly, the corresponding basketball is shot toward the hoop. If you key the word at or above your GWAM goal, then you will make the shot. If you key below the GWAM goal or inconsistently you will miss the shot. Try to concentrate on the drill lines when you play Key-A-Shot in Real-Time mode. Earning Points When you play the game, you earn 2 points for each basket that you make. You earn 20 bonus points for making all of your shots by keying the drill line accurately and meeting or exceeding your GWAM goal. You earn 10 bonus points for keying with 100% accuracy but below your GWAM goal. Game Over The game ends after you key all of the drill sets. The program displays your goal speed, average speed, fastest speed, and total score. Notes: 1. The BACKSPACE preference (on or off) for Lessons also applies to the Key-A-Shot game available from the Games menu. 2. You must set the preferences before beginning a new game.

Worldwide Shipping Game In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Heading 3 As an employee of Worldwide Shipping, Inc., your job is to process the packages shipped by the company. Key the figures that appear on the screen to process the shipping information. Beginning a New Game If enabled, this game appears in the right navigation menu for the Numeric Keypad lessons in KPDO. You may also access the Worldwide Shipping game through the Games tab in the left navigation menu. If you play the game through the Games tab, all keys are used in the drill lines.

When you click on the Game/Game Name menu option, the game will display in the modal window. A pop-up dialog box will give you the game instructions. Click the Enter button or tap the ENTER key to begin the game.

Game Play The KSPM goal for a game is approximately 90% of the average speed that you attained in the Build Skill lesson activities. The KSPM goal is also determined by your instructor if you have not completed the Build Skill activity. The number of drills that are presented in each game is also set by your instructor. The score area at the bottom of the input console shows the following information: Score Actual rate KSPM goal As you play the game, the packages move on the conveyor belt when you strike the first digit if the mode is set to real-time. Otherwise, the action occurs after you key the last figure. Always key each drill set as quickly and accurately as possible. Be sure to strike ENTER after each figure. If you make too many errors in a drill set, your KSPM rate will not be included in your final results.

Delayed vs. Real-Time Mode You can play the game in delayed mode or in real-time mode. In delayed mode, the action occurs after you key the entire drill set and tap ENTER. Then, the packages with the figures from the drill set begin to move across the screen. If you successfully key a figure at or above your KSPM goal, an "OK" stamp (correct) appears on the box. An "X" stamp (incorrect) appears on the package if you key the figure incorrectly. An "X" stamp also appears if you do not key the figure before the edge of the box leaves the conveyor belt and enters the chute. Playing the game in real-time mode can be more challenging because it forces you to focus on the figures in the drill set. As soon as you start keying the first figure, the packages start moving across the screen on the conveyor belt. The program checks the accuracy when you tap ENTER after each figure to determine if it should stamp an "OK" or "X" on the package. If a box reaches the edge of the conveyor belt before you finish keying the figure, an "X" stamp appears on the package. Earning Points When you play the game, you earn 100 points for each package that is stamped "OK." The program awards 500 points if you key the entire drill set correctly but do not meet your speed goal. The program awards 1,000 bonus points if you key the entire drill set correctly and you meet (or exceed) your KSPM goal. Game Over The game ends after you key all of the drill sets. The program displays your total score, fastest speed, average speed, and goal speed. This information also appears on the Lesson Report. If you play the game more than once, the application stores only the most recent score for each

lesson. Notes: 1. KSPM calculation. Keystrokes per minute (KSPM) is a method for measuring your keying speed when you work with the numeric keypad. Keying errors do not affect the KSPM rate. The calculation to compute the keystrokes per minute (KSPM) is: KSPM = total number of keystrokes minutes. 2. The BACKSPACE preference (on or off) used in the lesson also applies to the game.

Quick Review The Quick Review section presents drill lines for you to key using the line-check practice mode. If you meet the accuracy requirement, your actual rate (orange) and the goal rate (yellow) appear in the upper right corner of the work area. The goal rate is two GWAM higher than your actual rate. The program challenges you to key the same line at or above the goal rate (yellow). If you meet or exceed the goal, your new rate appears in green. Otherwise, the program displays your GWAM in red and asks if you want to try again to reach the goal rate. In the Skill Building left navigation menu, select the Quick Review option. The Quick Review feature lets you practice your keyboarding skills for the following techniques: Alphabetic Keys Numeric Keys Easy Lines Enter Key Space Bar Shift Keys Caps Lock Tab Key The Lesson Report under this section displays the latest attempt and also the previous attempt taken up by the student. 163 Introduction to Numeric Keypad Lessons The Numeric Keypad lessons are designed to build proficiency in using the numeric keypad on a 101-key keyboard, which emulates a calculator. These lessons are specifically designed for a calculator-type arrangement of keys; therefore, it is HIGHLY recommended that you not try to use the top row numeric keys for these lessons. The Numeric Keypad lessons are structured identically to the alphabetic and top row keying lessons - many of the activities are similar. In addition, there is a feature called Keypad Practice which acts like a calculator and displays the sums of the figures you enter. The lessons include some or all of the following activities: Learn Key Warm Up Improve Keystroking Build Skill Timed Writings Keypad Practice

Learn Key (Keypad) The lessons under keypad section enable the user to get proficient with specific key reaches. The Keypad section includes instructional lessons designed to help you learn the numbers from 0-9, period (.), and Enter key options. 1. The Learn (key) lesson part reinforces proper keyboarding posture, identifies the location of the new key, shows you which finger to use, demonstrates the proper key reach, and lets you practice the new key reach. 2. Errors represents the number of errors made by student. Backspace Key status represents whether the Backspace is used or not. Note: GWAM Calculation.

Using the Word Processor Timer At almost any time while using the Keyboarding Pro DELUXE Online software, you can access the Word Processor feature by clicking the Word Processor from the Main Menu. This feature is invoked when the user is in word processor and clicks on the Timer. Follow the instructions provided to use the Timer while using the word processor. 194 Production Tests In minitoc this Topic Heading 2 Heading 3 Production Tests are integrated throughout lessons , and are based on specific textbook modules. Production Tests are always enabled for keystroke checking; however, your instructor has the ability to enable or disable format checking. Before you begin taking a production test for the first time, open the Preferences button at the top right of the KPDO shell and determine whether KPDO will be checking format errors or not. Important To Know: The Production Test experience is identical to a WORD 2010 activity with one major difference - the Production Tests have multiple documents in them that can either be linked or stand-alone. You can navigate between these documents without having to close and reopen WORD Your total time creating and editing the documents in the test will be reported on the Production Tests Report. If documents are linked (i.e., share a single base document), returning to a previous activity and making changes to that document will delete any work you have done on subsequent activities. This is because there is only one document being used in the database. KPDO saves the reports and "snapshots" of your work, but a document that is shared between multiple activities will always reflect only the most recent work saved. Customized Production Tests can also be created by your instructor for specific course modules. These tests will appear in the drop down list along with the Production Tests The Production Test Add-In Toolbars The Production Test WORD 2010 Add-in Toolbars differ slightly from the toolbars you would see for regular WORD 2010 lesson activities. When you first open a Production Test, the KPDO tool bar displayed will have the following buttons in it: SAVE AND CLOSE: Click this button to save your work and exit WORD REMEMBER : you must use this button to close WORD 2010 or your work will not be saved. NEXT DOCUMENT: When you have completed your work on a document, click this button to navigate to the next document in the test. This button is not available when you start work on the last document in the test.

PREVIOUS DOCUMENT: You are permitted to return to a previous document in the test to make edits. HOWEVER, if you do so, any work you have done on subsequent documents in the test will be deleted. You will need to repeat your work. This button is not available on the first document in the test. CHECK DOCUMENT: Click this button to check your work on the complete test. REMEMBER : Once you have checked a test, it is saved and becomes Read-Only. You will not be able to edit it further. If you wish to make changes to any of the documents, you will need to start a new pass. NOTE: This button only becomes enabled once you have started work on the last document in the test. You cannot check the test until you have completed the documents. INFORMATION: Click this button to confirm which activity/document you are currently working on. NOTE: You can also see the document name in the WORD 2010 header at the top of the screen for quick reference. HELP: Click this button to see the Help information on Production Tests. When you have completed your work and checked the test, WORD 2010 will refresh and display the following Add-in Toolbar: Because you have ended the test and checked the documents, the PREVIOUS DOCUMENT and NEXT DOCUMENT buttons are disabled. The enabled buttons are: ERROR DETAILS: Will display a pop-up window with a listing of the errors you have made in the test. This feature can help you decide if you want to repeat the test or not. INFORMATION: Will display the name of the production test. CLOSE: Will save and close the Production Test. At this point, the test is marked as completed and will be viewable in the Production Tests Report. HELP: Will open the contextual Help window on Production Tests. Getting Started When Production Tests are available, a Production Test button appears on the screen when you open Lesson 26 or higher from the Lessons tab. For a more detailed understanding of how errors are identified and reported, reference Keystroke Error Marks or Format Error Checking Rules.

1. Click on the Production Test Button in the bottom right hand corner of the activity window. 2. The modal window will open and you will need to select the appropriate Production Test Module from the drop down list.

2. 3. The screen will display all Production Tests associated with that specific module. Click on the name of the test you wish to take from the list, then click the OK button. KPDO will display the Production Test Options dialog box. You now have the opportunity to: Begin a new production test. Print a production test. (This is only enabled if you have saved and checked a test previously.) Check an existing production test. (This is enabled if you have saved and checked a test previously.) Begin a New Production Test 1. You will then see the Document Instructions dialog box, which explains how to navigate between KPDO and WORD IMPORTANT : In order to save any work in a Production Test, you must use the KPDO Add-In Toolbar buttons. To continue with the test, click Start.

2. KPDO will check your record to determine if you have already done this test and saved it. If you have, and your instructor allows you multiple passes on production tests, you will see the following message: 2. Selecting No will return you to the Production Test Options screen (see Step 3 above). If you select Yes, WORD 2010 will then launch and open a blank screen for the first document required as part of the test. A pop-up window will display the information you need to find the activity in your textbook and get ready for the test.

3. 4. This dialog box will appear each time you start a new document. Click the Close button to begin the test. When you have completed your work on the document, you will need to navigate to the next document. When you click the NEXT DOCUMENT button, a dialog box will appear telling you which document activity to go to next in your book When you have completed all of the documents in the test, you will be able to check the test and see your errors in the Error Details window. You also have the option to NOT check the test before you submit it; instead, you have the option to check the test at a later time (see below, Check Existing Production Test). Click Close to complete and submit the test. The document and results then become a part of your student record and viewable in the Production Tests Report. Notes: Production test cannot be edited. Every attempt to start the production test from beginning

results in a new pass and the pass number being incremented by one. All documents of the test have to be done in the order as decided by the instructor. Print Production Test After you have completed and saved a production test, this option becomes enabled the next time you click on the Production Test button and select the production test name. The Production Test Options dialog box will display. Select Print production test from the menu and click OK. The test will open up at the first document in Print Preview mode. You can print the test documents by navigating to each document and clicking the Print button. Check Existing Production Test After you have completed and saved a production test, this option becomes enabled the next time you click on the Production Test button and select the production test name. The Production Test Options dialog box will display. Select Check existing production test from the menu and click OK.

WORD 2010 will launch and run the checking routines on your test. When the first document opens, it will be in Read-Only mode with the Error Details button enabled. At that point, you can view the test results. You can use the NEXT DOCUMENT and PREVIOUS DOCUMENT buttons to navigate between the test documents to view the errors. Production Test Reporting There are two types of reports for Production Tests. The first type of report is the actual WORD 2010 document (or series of documents) that you have completed and checked with KPDO. These documents are displayed in WORD 2010 with your errors marked. Your instructor will also be able to see this document. It is in read-only mode, so you will not be able to make any changes to the document at this point. You will have to start over with a new pass to make changes. The second report is the Production Tests report in the Reports tab. This is a summary report of the production tests you have completed and checked. The report shows at a quick glance the date the last pass was completed, your GWAM rate, the number of errors made, the total time required to complete the test, and the grade you received for your work (if your instructor has enabled the grading feature). For more detail, see the Production Test Report topic under About Reports.
