2 Digital manufacturing technology and convenient acce to High Performance Computing (HPC) in indutry R&D are eential to increae the quality of our product and the competitivene of our companie. Progre can only be achieved by educating our engineer, epecially thoe in the miing middle, and making HPC eaier to acce and ue for everyone who can benefit from thi advanced technology. The UberCloud HPC Experiment actively promote the wider adoption of digital manufacturing technology. It i an example of a gra root effort to foter collaboration among engineer, HPC expert, and ervice provider to addre challenge at cale. The UberCloud HPC Experiment tarted in mid-2012 with the aim of exploring the end-to-end proce employed by digital manufacturing engineer to acce and ue remote computing reource in HPC center and in the cloud. In the meantime, the UberCloud HPC Experiment ha achieved the participation of 500 organization and individual from 48 countrie. Over 80 team have been involved o far. Each team conit of an indutry end-uer and a oftware provider; the organizer match them with a well-uited reource provider and an HPC expert. Together, the team member work on the end-uer application defining the requirement, implementing the application on the remote HPC ytem, running and monitoring the job, getting the reult back to the end-uer, and writing a cae tudy. Intel decided to ponor a Compendium of 25 cae tudie, including the one you are reading, to raie awarene in the digital manufacturing community about the benefit and bet practice of uing remote HPC capabilitie. USE CASE Thi project focued on imulating tent deployment uing SIMULIA Abaqu/Standard and Remote Viualization Software from NICE to run Abaqu/CAE on SGI Cyclone. The intent wa to determine the viability of hifting imilar work to the cloud during period of full-utilization of in-houe compute reource. Information on Software and Reource Provider Abaqu from SIMULIA, the Daault Sytem brand for realitic imulation, i an indutry leading product family that provide a comprehenive and calable et of Finite Element Analyi (FEA) and multiphyic olver and modeling tool for imulating a wide range of linear and nonlinear model type. It i ued for tre, heat tranfer crack initiation, failure and other type of analyi in mechanical, tructural, aeropace,

4 automotive, bio-medical, civil, energy, and related engineering and reearch application. Abaqu include four core product: Abaqu/CAE, Abaqu/Standard, Abaqu/Explicit, and Abaqu/CFD. Abaqu/CAE provide uer with a modeling and viualization environment for Abaqu analyi. NICE Dektop Cloud Viualization (DCV) i an advanced technology that enable technical computing uer to remote acce 2D/3D interactive application over a tandard network. Engineer and cientit are immediately empowered by taking full advantage of high-end graphic card, fat I/O performance and large memory node hoted in "Public or Private 3D Cloud", rather than waiting for the next upgrade of the worktation. SGI Cyclone i the world' firt large cale on-demand cloud computing ervice pecifically dedicated to technical application. Cyclone capitalize on over twenty year of SGI HPC expertie to addre the growing cience and engineering technical market that rely on extremely high-end computational hardware, oftware and networking equipment to achieve rapid reult. Current State The end uer currently ha two 8 core PC worktation for pre- and pot-proceing with Abaqu/CAE, and a Linux baed compute erver with 40 core and 128GB of available memory. They do not ue any batch job cheduling oftware. The typical ize of model of the tent deign that they run ha 2-6 million degree of freedom (DOF). Typical job ue 20 core and take ix hour. After the job i run, the data i tranferred to the worktation for pot-proceing. For the experiment it wa agreed the Simulia and SGI would provide the end uer with Abaqu licene for up to 128 core in order to ee if running a job on more core could reduce the time to finih the job, a well a provide acce to NICE DCV remote graphic oftware to view the reult in Northern California before downloading them to the end uer office in New Hamphire. 5 10. End uer upload, run, view and download tet cae day of free acce i given to End Uer. CHALLENGES The team met via a con call and agreed upon the lit of tep that made up the end-toend proce. The etting up of the end uer account and having the oftware licene iued wa quickly done. In order for the End Uer to upload their model via SSH they needed to get permiion from their internal IT group, which took ome time. Once the model wa uploaded, the CAE Expert ran the model at variou core count and produced a routine benchmark report for the End Uer to review (ee reult in table below). The remote viz demo went moothly but when the End Uer tried to run the oftware themelve it took both the Reource and End Uer IT network team to open the neceary port, which took much longer than anticipated. Once the port were open, the remote viz pot-proceing experience wa better than expected. Analyi output file till needed to be hipped back to the End Uer for future reue, additional pot-proceing, etc. Data tranfer via the network wa found to be low. Final reult might be better tranferred through an external USB hard drive via FedEx. BENEFITS Here are the top 3 benefit of participating in the experiment for each of the team member: End Uer 1. Gained an increaed undertanding of what i involved in turning on and uing a cloud-baed olution for computational work with the Abaqu uite of finite element oftware. 2. Determined that hifting computational work to the cloud during period of fullutilization of in-houe compute reource i a viable approach to enuring analyi throughput. 3. Participation in the experiment allowed direct aement of the peed and integrity of remote viualization of computational model (both pre- and potproceing) for a variety of model and output databae ize. SGI/Nice DCV provided a robut olution, which permitted fat and accurate manipulation of the computational model ued in the tudy. Software Provider 1. I wa able to hear from an experienced Abaqu uer that doing remote potproceing uing a client machine in New Hamphire to an SGI Cyclone erver in California provided a good uer experience. 2. I wa able to hear from an end uer that managing the networking requirement (opening port in firewall) took ome work but wa manageable.

6 3. I have a reference point for an Abaqu uer who view executing hi Abaqu workflow on SGI Cyclone to be a viable olution. CAE Expert 1. Expanded my knowledge of analytical method ued in medical tent engineering with Abaqu/Standard. 2. Increaed awarene of uer interaction with cloud baed olution and networking requirement. 3. The geographic ditance of ~3100 mile between cutomer and SGI Cyclone Cloud reource confirm ditance i no longer a barrier in high performance computing and remote viualization. Baed on the Abaqu Engineer, he comment the SGI Remote Viualization for cloud computing wa fater and moother than I expected. Reource Provider: 1. The ability to walk a new cutomer through our HPC cloud proce for uage. 2. Teting our remote viualization olution, which i in beta. 3. Working with a long time CAE ISV partner to offer a joint cloud bae olution to run and view Abaqu job.
