1 Announcing the 2012 Heartland Chamber Music Festival Scholars The Fairway String Quartet The Fairway Quartet was formed in August of 2010 as students of HMAʼs Stringendo program under the tutelage of Jackie Lee, former violist of the Satori String Quartet and Co-Artistic Director/Faculty at the Heartland Chamber Music Academy. The Fairway Quartet has also studied with such noteworthy musicians as Tiberius Klausner, Ole Akahoshi, Syoko Aki, Ani Kavafian, Boris Berman, Peter Frankl, Parker String Quartet, Artis String Quartet, Tokyo String Quartet, and Juilliard String Quartet. Individual members of the quartet have also studied with Scott Lee, Ivan Chan, Peter Salaff, and James Dunham. In the summer of 2011, the quartet attended several chamber music festivals, including Accent11, The Juilliard String Quartet Seminar, and Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, collaborating with Jessica Bodner and Kayoung An. Currently, each member of the quartet is pursuing a degree in music performance at colleges and conservatories including The Colburn School, the Blair School of Music, the Shepherd School of Music, and Georgia Southern University. Philip Marten, violin Philip Marten attends the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where he studies with Cho-Liang Lin. Since he began playing violin at the age of 8, Philip has also studied with Norma Jean Seaton, Alice Joy Lewis, and Tiberius Klausner, and has participated in master classes with such esteemed musicians as William Preucil, Ivan Chan, Peter Salaff, Brian Lewis, and the Takacs Quartet. Before attending Rice University, Philip served as concertmaster of the Kansas City Youth Symphony for three years, and before this spent five years in the Wichita Youth Symphony program. He also studied at the Heartland Chamber Music Academy for three years under the tutelage of Jackie Lee. In 2010, Philip participated in the final round of the International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in Carnegie Hall with The Menergy String Quartet. Also in 2010 Philip won the Kansas City Youth Symphony concerto competition and performed with the Kansas City Youth Symphony. Philip was the winner of the Topeka Symphony Youth Talent Competition, performing as soloist with the Topeka Symphony in In 2006, he performed Vivaldiʼs Summer on tour in Ireland with Ottawa Suzuki Strings. Other awards include the winner of the Stephen Paul Wunsch Foundation Scholarship Award in 2007, winner of a Fellowship to participate in the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute in the summer of 2007 and winner of the String Competition at Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony in 2006.
2 Philip has attended many summer music festivals, including Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Juilliard String Quartet Program, Aspen Music Festival and School, Meadowmount School of Music, Brevard Music Center, and Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute and Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs. Rachael Schlosberg, violin Rachael Schlosberg is a violin performance major at Vanderbilt University studying with Connie Heard. She is from Overland Park, Kansas where she studied with Tiberius Klausner throughout high school. She has also studied with Carolyn Huebl and Benny Kim. In 2010, Rachael won the Vanderbilt University Concerto Competition. She has also won the Overland Park Concerto Competition (2008) and the Jerry Penzner Young Artist Competition (2006). The past few of summers, Rachael attended the Brian Lewis Young Artist Program (2008), Stringendo Chamber Music Festival (2008), Charles Castlemanʼs Quartet Program (2009), and Domaine Forget (2010). She has participated in master classes with Mimi Zweig, Aline Champion, Brian Lewis, Daniel Philips and Mark Fewer. She has studied chamber music with Jackie Lee through the Heartland Chamber Music Academy since As a member of the Fairway String Quartet, Rachael attended the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar in Tanner Menees, viola Tanner Menees started playing the violin when he was four-years-old and switched to viola at age seventeen. Now, at age nineteen, he studies viola under the tutelage of Paul Coletti at The Colburn School. Being an active chamber musician, Tanner has participated in and made it to the finals of the 2010 International Chamber Music and Ensembles Competition in Carnegie Hall and the 2011 Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition in Milwaukee where his string trio, the Kammer Trio, placed 2nd. He has attended various summer festivals alone and as a member of the Fairway Quartet such as the Bryan Lewis Young Artists Program, the Julliard String Quartet Seminar, and the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. Past teachers on violin and viola include Jackie (Chi-Yao) Lee, Tiberius Klausner, and Alice Joy Lewis. Samuel Cho, cello Samuel Cho was born in San Francisco, California, but grew up and received his education in Taiwan. His early musical experience was primarily in drums, guitar and singing in an acapella group. He enjoyed performing with these groups very much, playing at hospitals, on the streets and even in the subway. At the age of 17, he started to learn the cello and piano, where he found his greatest satisfaction. In 2006 he came to study in the United States. A year later, he made his solo debut with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Honduras, performing the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto. Winner of several competitions, he also earned the chance to perform the Tchaikovsky
3 Rococo Variations and Shostakovich Concerto No. 1, as well as the Vivaldi Double Concerto with his current teacher Dr. Steven Elisha. Samuel was a member of the Yinqi Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gordon Shi-Wen Chin (Taiwan), Topeka Symphony, as well as the Lawrence Chamber Orchestra. He was the orchestra instructor at Seaman High School and also taught cello at USD 501 Topeka Public Schools. He served as orchestra director at Topeka Bible Church from 2009 to Samuel is a recipient of the Patricia Ingle Gillis/Josephine Clarke String Quartet Scholarship at Georgia Southern University. He is also a member of Magnolia String Quartet coached by Dr. Larisa Elisha. In the summers, he serves as faculty at the New Heart String Camp in Houston, Texas since He is also the founding artistic director of In the Plains Music Festival. Samuel released a Christmas album-incarnation with pianist Shane Spangler, the CD is available online. Taiwanese Quartet The string quartet was formed and coached by Dr. Bonnie Lin in 2011 and has won the first prize in both Municipal and National Taiwan students' Chamber Music Competition with super excellent grade the same year. The String Quartet also participated in the first annual Chamber Music Competition held by HsiungHo Foundation and won the fourth prize with a grand of NT$30,000. The quartet won the first prize of high school division again in both local and national chamber music competition in 2012 with the highest score of all divisions. Yu-Ting Huang, violin YuTing Huang was born in December, 1994 and began her violin studies at the age of seven. She has won numerous prizes in many competitions in Taiwan and in 2010 she was the third prize winner in violin solo, junior high school division in Taiwan National Student Music Competition. The same year she got invited to enter the Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition. Ms Huang also participated in many master classes, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Vktor Pikaizen, Sherry Kloss and Shi- Chin Lu. She participated in the Walnut Hills Summer Festival in 2008 and was selected as one of the "rising stars". In May she will be performing Beethovenʼs Spring Sonata at Jimmy ChoLiang Lin's master class. Ms Huang has been the second violinist in the string quartet since Playing golf is her favorite activity next to playing the violin.
4 Ching Yi Willy Wei, violin Ching Yi Willy Wei was born in Tainan in 1994 and started his study in both violin and piano at the age of five. Mr. Wei has won numerous prizes in Taiwan; he was the first prize winner in both violin and piano solo of elementary school division in 2005 Municipal Students' Music Competition and the following year he claimed the first prize in violin solo and second prize in the piano solo division in Taiwan National Students' Music Competition. In 2006 he entered the ShinTienGong Music Competition and was invited to perform at the winners' recital. The same year he entered the Fukuoka Students' Competition in Japan and was the first prize winner in elementary school division. In 2008 he gave his debut recital in Tainan. In 2010 he got selected to participate the Summer Music Camp held by National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and had toured in Taiwan and China. In 2010 he got accepted to the music talent class in National Tainan Girls' High School without taking the National Jointed Entrance Exam. He was the first prize winner in the concerto competition held by Academy of Taiwan Strings and played Haydn Violin Concert in C, op.1 in National Taipei Concert Hall. in 2012 Mr. Wei was the first prize winner in violin solo high school division of National Students' Music Competition. Mr. Wei has been the first violinist with the string quartet since Yin-Ting Tseng, viola YinYing Rita Tseng was born in ChiaYi, Taiwan in 1994 and started her study in violin with Dr. Bonnie Lin at the age of eight. She won first prize at a local competition in Tainan after just one year of study. She claimed the first prize again in the same competition two years later. In 2009 she was awarded a scholarship to participate in the summer festival held by The National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra in SunMoonLake. The same year she got accepted to the music talented class in National Tainan First Girls' High School with the second highest grades and was one of the few students who got accepted without taking the national jointed high school entrance exams. In 2010 she was the first prize winner in the Tainan Music Competition high school division. In 2011 she was awarded a scholarship to attend Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, North Carolina and was one of the finalists in the concerto competition. Yun Han, cello Yun Han was born in Tainan in May, 1995 and started her study in piano with her mother at the age of four. She began her study in cello when she was eight years old and was accepted to the music talent class in YunFu Elementary School in Tainan two years later. Ms Han has won the first prize in cello solo division of Taiwan National Students' Music Competition four times in eight consecutive years (the competition was held every other year). In 2012 she acclaimed the first prize in the high school division with the highest score in cello solo section of all divisions. Ms Han lived in Florida for a year in 2006 when her father relocated there for work. She studied with Mark Tanner and was principal cello in the Alachua County Youth Orchestra. In 2010 she got accepted to the music talent class in National Tainan First Girls' High School without taking the national jointed high school entrance exam. In 2011 she was the winner of the concert
5 competition in school and performed Dvorak Cello Concerto with the school orchestra. Ms. Han has been cellist of the string quartet since Quartet Cameron Lugo, violin 15-year-old violinist Cameron F. Lugo of Jonesborough, TN began studying violin at age nine with Tim Barrett at the Academy of Strings in Johnson City, TN. He currently studies with Dr. Thomas Joiner, Professor of Violin and Orchestral Studies at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Cameron is concertmaster of the Symphony of the Mountains Youth Orchestra conducted by Ross Bader. He made his concerto debut in February of 2011 at the historic Tennessee Theatre, performing with the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra. Cameron is honored to have been selected as one of 12 violinists in the country to participate as a Young Artist in the prestigious Brian Lewis Young Artist Program in Ottawa, Kansas this summer. Cameron was named the national second place winner of the 2012 MTNA Junior String Performance Competition as well as winning the second place award in the 2012 National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) Stillman-Kelley Competition at the national level. In 2011, he placed first in the Appalachian Classical Music Association (ACMA) Young Artist Competition, and was one of nine finalists and second prize winner in the 2012 Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition. Cameron is a member of a string quartet which won the 2011 Outstanding String Performance Award at the AMCA Sonata Classics Festival. In 2010, he was named the winner of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. As a composer, Cameron won first place awards in 2011 for his String Quartet in C minor from both Pikes Peak Young Composers Competition and the NFMC Junior Composers Contest at the national level. Pikes Peak Young Composer Competition also awarded Cameron first place for his original composition for choir and full orchestra entitled How Excellent is Thy Name. Cameron participated in the Virginia Suzuki Instituteʼs Fry Street Quartet Camp in He has been selected to perform in master classes taught by Prof. Oleh Krysa of the Eastman School of Music, Terry Durbin, William Fedkenheuer, Linda Fiore, Prof. Mark Zelmanovich, and Dr. Miroslav Hristov. Tobiah Murphy, violin Tobiah will be a senior in the fall of 2012 at the Cleveland Institute of Music where he is studying with Mr. William Preucil. Prior to attending CIM, his principle teacher was Mr. Benny Kim. Tobiah has also participated in master classes held by Midori Goto, David Updegraff, head of the violin department at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Ms. Sally Thomas, violin professor at the Juilliard School of Music. Tobiah was a scholarship recipient at both the Meadowmount School of Music, where he studied for
6 three summers and also at the Heifetz International Music Institute for 2 summers. Winning first place in the Kansas City Symphonyʼs Young Artist Concerto Competition, Tobiah was honored to solo with the Kansas City Symphony in May of 2009 playing the first movement of the Saint-Saensʼ Violin Concerto in D. Prior to winning this competition, he won several local concerto competitions in Missouri and also in Arkansas. In June of 2010, Tobiah was privileged to give a public concert for his local community in Joplin, Missouri. Kevan Clarkston, viola A student of Scott and Jackie Lee, Kevan Clarkston is a sophomore at the University of Missouri-Kansas City pursuing a Bachelor of Music in viola performance and a Bachelor of Arts in biology. He has served as principal violist of the Kansas City Youth Symphony, KMEA All-State Orchestra, KMEA Northeast District Orchestra, and Blue Valley North Symphonic Orchestra. He is a winner of the 2012 UMKC Concerto/Aria Competition and received the top prize in the 2012 Sigma Alpha Iota Saint Louis Alumnae Chapter Scholarship Competition. His quartet, Menergy, performed in the final round of the International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition at Carnegie Hall in As a chamber musician, Kevan has performed in masterclasses with Ivan Chan, Peter Salaff, Che-Yen Chen, The Formosa Quartet, The Reubens Quartet, and The Parker Quartet. Clarkston would like to thank his parents, his teachers, and his friend and mentor, I-Ting Huang, who have given him the opportunity to pursue music as a passion and as a career. Jeff Millen, cello Jeff Millen is currently a senior at The University of Missouri-Kansas City where he studies cello performance with Carter Enyeart. In 2010, Millen's string trio placed 2nd at the Music Teachers National Association Competition in the chamber division. He plays in the Conservatory Orchestra, numerous chamber ensembles, and will be seeking a Master's degree in cello performance next year.
