Fourteen graduate with music degrees By Joan C. McKinney, news and publications coordinator Dr. Ron Lewis, a member of Campbellsville University's Board of Trustees and former United States representative, quoted Sir Winston Churchill as he spoke at Campbellsville University's commencement today. "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning," Lewis told the graduates. Lewis is former United States representative from the 2nd congressional district. Dr. J. Robert Gaddis, dean of the School of Music, conducted the CU Brass Ensemble, which played for the processional and recessional. Dr. Mark Bradley, professor of music, led the hymn and in singing of the university's alma mater, "Campbellsville, We Love Thee." Campbellsville University presented 195 undergraduate degrees for a total of 474 graduates for the academic year , upon completion of all academic requirements. Of those graduates, fourteen were from the School of Music: MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC Isabel Paula Gouveia (Brazil) Roger Matthew Hodge (Taylorsville, KY) Hsiu Fang Lin (Taiwan) Min Hsiu Shih (Taiwan)

McArthur publishes Schocker biography Dr. Lisa McArthur, associate professor of music, has recently published a book entitled Ambidextranata: The Versatile Gary Schocker, published by Falls House Press of Nashua, New Hampshire. Gary Schocker is one of the world's best
5 5 of 5 7/15/2010 2:24 PM flutists and is also the most published, living composer of music for the flute. Ambidextranata is the title of one of Schocker's compositions, a combination of two words: "ambidextrous," because the piece is written for one person to play both the flute and the piano at the same time, and "sonata," a common title for a musical composition. Schocker, a Juilliard graduate, has traveled all around the world performing, teaching, and receiving commissions for new compositions. The book includes some of the stories from his life and his travels, including three visits to Campbellsville, as well as information about his compositions and teaching information that would be valuable to flutists. Schocker began performing as a soloist with orchestras as a teenager, when he performed with both the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. About a decade later, he received a last minute telephone call to fill in for worldrenowned flutist Jean Pierre Rampal, who was ill. He traveled to the concert and almost immediately went on stage, performing the entire work from memory, including cadenzas that were written as he was riding in the car to the concert. He continues to perform as a soloist today. Lisa McArthur is a Professor of Music at Campbellsville University, where she teaches courses in flute and music theory. She wrote the book while on sabbatical during the academic year, made possible through a grant from the Appalachian College Association and a sabbatical from Campbellsville University.
