1 Unit description : Dental Clinic No. of Clinics : 49 clinics in main hospital 2 clinics in Family Health Building 2 clinics in Children s Cancer Center No. of sessions per week (Avg) : 378 Scope of service The department engages in clinical practice in a forty-nine operatory clinic in the out-patient wing of the main hospital and two satellite clinics. It is staffed by dentists (consultants, associate consultants, and general practice residents), dental hygienists, registered nurses, dental assistants, dental laboratory technicians, secretaries, and other support staff. Among the services provided are: general dentistry, specialty dentistry and hospital in-patient dentistry. Tertiary care services are available for patients who are medically compromised, have facial pain, require maxillofacial or comprehensive prosthetics, have facial deformities, or require out-patient general anesthesia (with the Department of Anesthesiology) for dental treatment. The department provides team members to the Hospital s Cleft Palate and Head & Neck Oncology Teams. Frequent procedures/services/functions The Dental Clinic consists of all dental specialties: General Practice Endodontics Orthodontics Pedodontics Periodontics Prosthodontics, including maxillofacial Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dental Hygiene The following services and procedures are provided IV sedation procedures Maxillofacial surgeries including orthognathic and distraction cases Outpatient and Inpatient general anesthesia Osseo integrated implants Oral maxillofacial prosthetics Hours of operation Saturday thru Tuesday : hours Wednesday : hours Criteria for admission to service Medically compromised / tertiary care Protocol royal family diplomats Selected administrative referrals Dental Clinic Jan.2012 Page 1 of 5

2 Staffing plan KING FAISAL SPECIALIST HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTRE (GEN. ORG.) The Dental Clinic is committed to recruiting and retaining staff who are committed to excellence in practice. The Dental Clinic also strives to keep a mix of multicultural staff which is expected by our large Protocol patient population and to ensure our high standards are maintained within the Department. The dental clinic has established standards for staffing based the number of full time equivalent staff calculated against the standard workload units performed each year. The 75 Dental clinic staff comprises of the following: Job Titles & Basic functions Dental Clinic : Supervises the daily operations of the Dental Clinic and performs required administrative functions. Senior Dental Assistant: Oversees the day to day clinical activities of the dental clinic. Assists in the supervision of dental assistants & hygienists. Supervises and directs the front desk staff to ensure orderly patient flow. Dental Assistant Coordinator: Coordinates scheduled dental clinic activities. Assists with scheduling of clinic facilities to meet unscheduled needs. Dental Patient Coordinator: In collaboration with the Dentistry & Nursing staff, is responsible to ensure quality dental care is provided to all medically compromised patients referred to the Department of Dentistry. Dental Assistant: Performs dental assisting duties using the 4-handed dentistry technique in clinical practice. Prepares patients and assists dentist as directed in accordance with the established procedures. Dental Hygiene Clinician: Supervises dental hygiene care and provides clinical instructions for dental hygiene trainees, students and dental hygiene staff. Dental Hygienist: Performs cleaning of teeth and other oral preventative treatment. Instructs patients in good oral hygiene practice Assistant Head Nurse: Assists both the Head Nurse and Dental Clinic in the management of nursing operational activities in the Dental Clinic. Performs duties as SN1. Staff Nurse I: Utilizes nursing process to provide total patient care. 8 Assistant Head Nurse/CAN. Dental X-ray Technician: Operates dental Radiography equipment to expose and process dental xrays. 3 in support of patient care and services. Patient Care Assistant: Responsible for safe transportation of patients to and from the Dental Clinic. Performs messenger duties Hospital Assistant: Provides complete support for all office activities for the and Dental Clinic Staff Interpreter: Serves as a bilingual interpreter/translator for Arabic/English exchanges between healthcare providers and healthcare recipients. Method of adjusting to staffing variances The Dental Clinic in conjunction with the Snr Dental Assistant is responsible for the staffing schedules including Dental Assistants, Hygienists and other support staff. 6 weekly assignments for the rotation of the Staff Nurses is prepared for by the Assistant Head Nurse. Dental Hygienist schedules are fixed and all leaves coordinated to maintain sufficient staffing levels. Weekly Dental Assistants assignments are made based on their knowledge, skills and experience appropriate to the clinics. The majority of Dental Assistants are permanently assigned to one specific specialty or clinic. Adjustments to permanent assignments may be made in order to provide the most appropriate coverage to the clinic to ensure the highest levels of safety and quality of care. Short notice assignments are given in the event of sick leave coverage. The most experienced Dental Assistant for the assignment is chosen. A Dental Assistant is assigned to carry the on call pager during weeknights and on the weekends in order to assist in providing emergency dental care. Staff Nurses generally float to the following units: All Staff Nurse I s are required to rotate through all the areas of dental clinic, including procedural sedation, general anesthesia, recovery, Pre-medication (prophylaxes) & Health History clinic, In-out patient coordinator and walk-in clinics clearing patients undergoing surgery.(bmt,renal,liver Heart and lung Transplants cardiac valve surgeries, and Head & Neck prior radiation therapy. Recovery competency requires dental staff nurses to rotate through all recovery areas, both in pt and out pt in the hospital. Otherwise, float assignments to other units is rare. QUALIFICATIONS OF STAFF: Qualifications/Licenses/Certifications Required Registered Nurses: Registered Nurse with current nursing license from country of origin Two years recent acute care experience All staff nurses must be BLS, ACLS and PALS certified. Bilingual nurses who meet the criteria are encouraged. In-services/continuing education programs provided to maintain staff competency Dental Clinic In-services provided by Dental Clinic staff are conducted twice per month. Dept of Dentistry Grand Rounds are conducted weekly, with some invitations extended to dental clinic staff. Dental Assistants are encouraged to continue with accredited correspondence courses sanctioned by parent associations eg. 4 Specialty or procedure specific educational activities are conducted throughout the year (eg. implant training workshops). Aside from departmental education activities, there are opportunities to attend in the other departmental educational activities as well as courses conducted by the Training & Development department. Saudi Council for health specialist Method of communication with other departments/programs Internal and external methods of communication Bi-Weekly Dental Clinic staff meetings Hospital system is used to disseminate information to all dental clinic & Hospital staff Notice boards & white boards provide daily updates on staffing assignments as well as postings of any announcements. Collaborative practice meeting held once a month Representative from Dental clinic attends various Dept of Dentistry meetings, internal committees and ad-hoc committees and task forces in addition to all nursing affair activities and committees. Externally, staff members attend a number of hospital committees including: General Hospital staff meetings Representative from Dental clinic attends various intra departmental meetings and is represented on several committees and task foce collaborative relationships with other departments Monthly Cleft Lip and Palate clinic is run in the Dental Clinic. A collaborative clinic in coordination with 8 of other departments. Follow up clinic is run monthly in Plastics department with representation from Pedodontics, Orthodontics and OMS. Weekly combined Head & Neck cancer clinics are run in the ORL clinic, with a General Dentist and Dental Assistant attending the clinic and subsequent round table discussion. Collaborative interaction takes place on a daily basis with all supporting departments, i.e., medical records, appointments & admissions, protocol, inpatient and out patient units (eg BMT clinic) as dental patients are primarily multidiscipline treated. 5 Goals of the Department The Department of Dentistry s philosophy is to provide patients with the highest quality dental care and service through caring attitudes, effective communication and excellence in treatment processes. KFSH&RC Dental Clinic assists in providing this care to tertiary, medically compromised and V.I.P. patients.
