It is important that any missing, damaged, or faded labels on the equipment be replaced immediately. Replacement labels are available by contacting your nearest S&C Sales Office, S&C Authorized Distrib utor, S&C Headquarters, or S&C Electric Canada Ltd. DANGER Disconnect switches may be energized from either side, and with the blade in any position. Always consider all circuits and disconnect switch live parts energized until de-energized, tested, and grounded. Contact with energized live parts can cause serious personal injury or death. 4 Inspection Examine the shipment for external evidence of damage as soon after receipt as possible, preferably before removal from the carrier s conveyance. Check the bill of lading to make sure that all shipping skids, crates, and containers listed thereon are present. If there is visible loss and/or damage: 1. Notify the delivering carrier immediately. 2. Ask for a carrier inspection. 3. Note condition of shipment on all copies of the delivery receipt. 4. File a claim with the carrier. If concealed damaged is discovered: 1. Notify the delivering carrier within 15 days of receipt of shipment. 2. Ask for a carrier inspection. 3. File a claim with the carrier. 6 Connectors S&C Loadbuster Disconnect Switch connector options designated -C and -A (see Connector Arrangements table on page 5) are suitable for hot line tool handling. The terminal-pad hole design prevents the connector attachment bolt(s) from turning, and the saddle member of the connector is held against, and loosely keyed to, the termi nal pad by the retaining washer(s). The clamp ing member of the connector is, in turn, keyed to the saddle. The connector can be easily loosened and tightened by means of the hex nut(s) without either connector member turning in place. Although the bolt and the connector saddle are held captive, they nevertheless float so that when the hex nut is tightened all mating parts are subjected to the same clamping pres sure. See Figure 1. With connector options -G and -K for disconnect switches rated 900 amperes continuous, and with connector option -H or -J for discon nect switches rated 600 amperes continuous, the attachment bolts are similarly held captive by retaining washers and are prevented from turning by the terminal-pad hole design. ½-inch carriage bolt inch square hole Key Connector saddle Retaining washer Connector clamp Flat washer Lockwasher Hex nut Figure 1. 7 Installing the Loadbuster Disconnect Switch Step 1 Remove the disconnect switch from its shipping carton or crate, taking care not to lift it by the insulators or live parts. Step 2 Install, or reposition, blade stop pin in desired location. Loadbuster Disconnect Switches are furnished with a factory-installed blade stop pin, posi tioned for a 160-degree blade opening angle. This stop pin may be moved to limit the blade opening to 90 degrees. Remove the retaining ring from one end of the stop pin, and relocate pin to the alternate ¼-inch diameter hole nearest the hinge. Fasten the stop pin by pressing the retain ing ring over the end of the stop pin until the ring snaps back into the groove pro vided. See Figure 2. Figure 2. Step 3 Install optional dead-ending bracket for Branch Feeder Style(Catalog Number Option -W ) to both ends of the base using the galvanized hardware provided. See Figure 3. 8 Installing the Loadbuster Disconnect Switch Step 4 Hoist the disconnect switch, and bolt it into position on the supporting structure. Branch-Feeder Style: Branch-Feeder Style disconnect switches are suitable for single- or double- crossarm mounting using optional backup member and mounting hardware (if supplied). See Figures 4 and 5. Crossarm Style: Crossarm Style discon nect switches are supplied with a backup member and hardware, suitable for single- or double-crossarm mounting. See Figures 6 and 7. These disconnect switches may also be directly bolted to the support structure. See Figure 8. Main-Feeder and Station Styles: Main- Feeder and Station Style disconnect switches may be bolted directly to the support structure. See Figure 9. Do not hoist the disconnect switch by rigging on the live parts. 9 Installing the Loadbuster Disconnect Switch Step 5 Verify the presence of the contact lubricant applied at the factory to both jaw and hinge contact surfaces and that this lubricant is still free of contaminants. If necessary, clean the contact surfaces with a nontoxic, nonflam mable solvent and apply a fresh coating of lubricant (S&C Part Number , Shell Gadus S2 U or equivalent). Step 6 Make electrical connections. If you are using aluminum conductors, be sure to wire-brush them and apply a coating of oxidation inhibi tor S&C Part Number (Sanchem NO-OX-ID A Special or equivalent) before inserting them into the disconnect switch s connectors. Operation Closing the Disconnect Switch Opening the Disconnect Switch Insert a distribution prong into the pull-ring and swing the blade to within approximately 45 of the fully closed position. Then, while looking away from the disconnect switch, drive the blade to the closed position using a vigorous thrust. Carefully disengage the prong from the pull-ring taking care to avoid pulling the blade open. WARNING Do not attempt to open an S&C Loadbuster Disconnect Switch to interrupt load current, with out the use of a loadbreak tool such as S&C s Loadbuster Tool. An arc started by opening a disconnect switch under load with out a loadbreak tool can cause arcing, equipment damage, serious injury, or death. S&C s Loadbuster Tool is ideally suited for use in opening Loadbuster Disconnect Switches. Load buster Tool is S&C s unique method of providing low-cost, positive, and convenient live-switch ing capability for such devices. Instructions for use of Loadbuster Tool with S&C Loadbuster Disconnect Switches are shown on page 10. S&C Instruction Sheet

10 Operation Opening Disconnect Switch with Loadbuster Tool Before opening the disconnect switch, check for proper resetting of the Loadbuster Tool by extend ing the tool about three inches (77 mm) by hand. Throughout this travel, an increasing spring resistance should be felt. Step 1 Reach across in front of the disconnect switch and attach Loadbuster Tool s anchor to the attachment hook on the far side of the disconnect switch. See Figure 10. Step 2 Swing Loadbuster Tool toward the disconnect switch and pass the Loadbuster Tool pull-ring hook through the pull-ring on the disconnect switch. The pull-ring latch will deflect and upon complete entry of the pull-ring, will spring back, locking Load buster Tool to the pull-ring. Loadbuster Tool is now con nected across the upper contacts of the disconnect switches. Step 3 To open the circuit, operate Loadbuster Tool with a firm, steady pull until it is extended to its maximum length. See Figure 11. Avoid jerk ing and hesitation. The resetting latch will keep it open. Generally, there will be no indi cation of circuit interruption. The only sound will be that of Loadbuster Tool tripping. Figure 10. 11 Operation Step 4 To detach Loadbuster Tool after circuit interrup tion, first raise it slightly and disengage the anchor from the attachment hook. Next, bring the disconnect switch toward its fully open position as illustrated in Figure 12. Then remove Loadbuster Tool from the pull-ring by rotat ing the pole. This will deflect the pull-ring latch to release the pull-ring. To perform this operation easily and smoothly, always roll Loadbuster Tool so that it rotates in a downward direction. WARNING Careless manipulation of the Loadbuster Tool can decrease the open gap to the point where flashover will occur. This can result in arcing, electrical shock, serious injury, or death. Step 5 To reset Loadbuster Tool for the next operation, hold as shown in Figure 13. Extend the tool slightly and lift the resetting latch with your thumb. With the latch up, telescope the tool completely so the trigger can reset itself. Depress the telescoping tube until the orange paint on the inner tube assembly is no longer visible. Check for proper resetting by extend ing tool about three inches (77 mm). Through out this travel an increasing spring resistance should be felt. Resetting latch Figure 12.
