7 12 Case Study Cameron & Wilding Case Study Cameron & Wilding 13 Ben Wilding (Managing Director) and Michael Otolorin (Drupal Developer) Designing the future How a tenant-student collaboration is progressing the Drupal community LSBU tenants Neil Cameron and Ben Wilding started their digital agency Cameron & Wilding (C&W) in January Though originally just the two of them, they had a clear aim to design and develop websites. They now employ 19 and provide web solutions to an impressive list of clients including the BBC, The Telegraph, The Economist, Oxford University Press and the Imperial War Museum. Since the beginning, C&W has stuck to its values of professionalism and friendliness, delivering high quality work against a backdrop of building open and trusting relationships. Their collaborative ethos extends beyond the office. C&W shares its knowledge with LSBU students in a variety of ways: giving guest lectures, contributing to course content, recruiting interns and judging student challenges. They do this not only because it feels good to give something back, but as a valid extension of their business model. C&W uses Drupal software to develop many of their websites. Being open source, Drupal s evolution is supported by a worldwide community of users and developers. Introducing students to the software exposes Drupal to the next generation and brings fresh talent to boost its community. The final year of LSBU s BSc Information Technology degree involves a Drupal development project and C&W deliver a guest lecture. Having a development company talk to students emphasises the relevance of Drupal and has a positive influence on the students enthusiasm for the module. C&W aims to become the best Drupalbased agency in the UK and their partnership with LSBU continues, with more student internships planned. The company hopes to double in size and build upon their already strong reputation.
8 14 Case Study Fresh talent Case Study Fresh talent 15 Fresh talent Postgraduate intern adds enthusiasm to cutting-edge start-up Silicon Thoughts is a buzzing startup created by entrepreneur Dr Jevon Davies to design and build satellite receivers. At the cutting edge of electronic engineering, Jevon wanted to expand his business quickly and efficiently to keep up with the market. The solution was to recruit LSBU intern, Dana Jamal. Dana had studied on LSBU s MSc Embedded Systems and Jevon found him eager to learn, intelligent and enthusiastic. With Silicon Thoughts busy developing a navigation receiver for Europe s new Galileo Satellite System, Jevon integrated Dana into the company and taught him everything he needed to know. An outcome of electronic engineering being such a fast moving industry is that universities can be left behind, teaching older technologies that are no longer relevant. On his MSc Dana had learnt Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD) and microprocessor design as two separate systems. However, Jevon was aware that both technologies had been integrated into one reconfigurable Field-programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Not only did Jevon educate Dana in FPGA but he fed back to the University as well. This led to courses being updated and upgraded to include the integrated technology and embedded soft-processor cores. Silicon Thoughts is hoping to combine the Galileo system with GPS to gain sub centimeter relative position accuracy. This is the kind of precision needed to make sure quadcopters and drones don t bump into each other when in flight and during take off and landing. Dana has now been at Silicon Thoughts for over a year and intends to register to complete his PhD in Embedded Systems at LSBU. Jevon hopes that the research generated for this will benefit both the University and Silicon Thoughts, further cementing ties between industry and academia. Jevon Davies and Dana Jamal

10 18 Testimonials Get in touch 19 We wouldn t be where we are today without the support from the Clarence Centre team. We love the Ping Pong tables! The tenancy team is always available for a good chat about how we re doing as a company and how the University can support us. A great network to be part of, with everybody facing similar challenges growing a tech company. We build engaging web experiences for several FTSE 100 companies and now also design and build our own digital products. We originally started in the Technopark with 4 staff and have grown over the past 5 years to 25 and moved to the Clarence Centre for more space. Our strong links with the LSBU staff and students have been mutually-beneficial, as we have provided students with real-life learning experiences. Digital Detox We moved into the LSBU Workspace when we set up our new venture Images&Co, originally in the Technopark and then the Clarence Centre when it opened. We chose LSBU as a suitable home for our venture because of the potential of collaboration in the areas of knowledge transfer, innovation and skills development, and because we felt its vision of improving the employability and enterprise skills of its students by connecting them with local businesses is closely aligned with our ethos. A thriving community of other small businesses and the flexibility of the office space allows us to engage and share ideas with others in similar circumstances in ways that support our business objectives Join our tenant community Images&Co., design consultancy and tenant at the Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation T E workspace@lsbu.ac.uk
