2 Dear Fellow Scouters, You are invited to Occeneechee Council s 11 th Annual University of Scouting. If you are looking for some new ideas or need training for your Scouting position this is the event for you. What is the University of Scouting The University of Scouting is a fun filled, hands-on training event and an opportunity to network with other Scouters. This one day training event is designed for ALL Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Sea Scout and Venturing Leaders. In addition we have training opportunities for Venturing youth and Boy Scouts 14 years and older. There is also an opportunity to take Leader Specific training for your Scouting position. The following Leader Specific Training will be made available this year: Charter Organization Representative Training (D62) Venturing Crew Committee Challenge (WS12) Troop Committee Challenge (WS10) Merit Badge Counselor Training (D76) Pack Committee Challenge (C60) Den Leader Specific Training (C41/C42) Scout Master/Asst. Scout Master Cub Master Specific Training (C40) Leader Specific (S24) Sea Scout Leader Specific (P44) What you need to know Participants may register for courses in any of the colleges. For example, a Cub Scout Leader may register for a Boy Scout or General Studies of a Venturing course. Our goal is for Scouters to increase their knowledge by experiencing the different areas of the Scouting program. Location: Wake Technical Community College, 9101 Fayetteville Road (US Hwy 401) in Raleigh, NC. Cost of Registration: Registration is $25.00 which includes lunch. On line registration starts Tuesday, September 1, 2015 and ends Monday, October 30, Walk up registrations will be accepted on November 7th t at a cost of $ There is an additional $10 fee for Red Cross First Aid/CPR Training. What are the critical elements of every Pack meeting? Learn techniques to make Pack meetings fun, informative, fast paced, and include all Cubs and parents. Come learn how to be the Coolest Cubmaster. C Blue & Gold Banquet (Let's Throw a Party) Learn what it takes to make this event memorable for everyone. Planning and organization are the keys to making your Pack's Blue & Gold a spectacular event! Bring your theme ideas and props to discuss. C Derbies, Rodeos & Regattas (Fun Beyond the Pinewood Derby) Some of the most fun a boy can have in Scouting can be found in the friendly competition of a Bike Rodeo, a Raingutter Regatta and especially a Space Derby. These events are easier to stage than they first appear, and can be repeated year after year to the delight of all. Come learn how to make these terrific events work in your unit.

Learn to say "Thank You" a 1000 ways! C Tie it up - Knots for Cub Scouts Learn skills to teach the knots all Cub Scouts should be familiar with. C Neckerchief Slides (Unique Bling for your Neckerchief) Send your Cubs home with a theme based slide each month. Slides are great ways to express yourself, your den, and activities.

We'll discuss ways to make your Pack program exciting using resources in your community, district and Council. This session will also cover planning, scheduling, coordinating and budgeting Pack special events. C Using your Den Chief and Denners to their Fullest Potential Discover what a Den Chief is and how he can help YOU run an exciting den program. This trained Boy Scout role model plays a very important role on the leadership team. Also, find out what are Denners and Assistant Denners and how to use them in your Den program? (recommended for new leaders) C Webelos to Scout Transition Valuable tips used to prepare Cub Scouts for the Boy Scouting experience. This class is designed to help your Webelos families through this important process. C Cub Grub Cubs love to be involved, especially when it has to do with food and cooking. This class will help you learn what things Cub Scouts are able to do to be an active part in meal prep and clean up. After all, a Scout is hungry.

This course will introduce you to to the seven Principles of Leave No Trace and the five Principles of Tread Lightly!. Learn about the current Outdoor Ethics Awareness and Action Award and the steps you need to take to to lead your Pack's LNT activities. C Scouting with ADD/ADHD, Asperger's, etc These Scout can present some unique challenges to leaders. Learn how make your program reach out everyone in your Pack. C Running a Large Successful Pack Congratulations! You ve done it! You re pack is HUGE now what? Learn the keys to keeping a large pack moving forward and how to keep that Pack meeting fun and exciting.

10 Cub Scout College P E R I O D Course # Course Title Course Description C A Cub Scout Introduction to S.T.E.M. What s S.T.E.M.? Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. It s the newest thing that your schools and Scouting is introducing to our youth. This course will teach what S.T.E.M. is and how you can use it within your Scouting program. (Two-Period Class) C Putting more Outing in Scouting Most youth join Scouting to go outdoors! That is not a surprise, but too often we do not meet that expectation. Come learn about unique, time-and-youth-tested ideas in unit outdoor program; including the importance of a child/nature connection, why outdoor program attracts and retains youth, hikes and campouts with a purpose, conservation projects, planning a quality program, and more. C Always Needing a Backup / Games with Little or No Equipment The boys are getting rowdy, you've got no materials. If you don't give them something to do, they will find something to do. What can a leader do? (recommended for new leaders) C Songs, Skits and Games How to Enhance any Meeting or Activity. Boys love to sing, act and play. This class will give you the tools to enhance any meeting or activity with songs, skits and games. Come have fun being silly, learning songs and playing games that will keep everyone having a good time. (recommended for new leaders)

11 Cub Scout College P E R I O D Course # Course Title Course Description C Den Leader Specific Training (3 Hr Class) Den Scout Leader Position-Specific Training has been developed to give you, a new leader, the knowledge and skills, as well as generate the enthusiasm, that you'll need to be successful. Earn your Trained patch. (Three-Period Class) C Pack Committee Challenge Pack Committee Position-Specific Training (3 Hr Class) The purpose of the Pack Committee Challenge is to familiarize pack committee members with the various responsibilities of the individual members of the committee as well as the committee as a whole. The goal is to help each pack committee work as a team to improve the Scouting experience for adult and youth members. (Three-Period Class) C History and Traditions of Cub Scouts Have you ever wondered how it all started? Who was the first Cub Scout? Why do we do what we do? This class can help answer all those questions and help you understand the rich history of Cub Scouts. C Great Expectations Boys (and adults) will act like Scouts and look sharp if they know what is expected of them. Learn how to develop a culture of proper behavior in your unit. (recommended for new leaders)

Learn how to strengthen our Cubs through the various religious emblems and how to conduct a Scout's Own Service for Cubs. C Effective Cub Scout Recruiting Cub Scouting is a great program - all boys deserve the chance to be a Scout. We need get the word out to boys and their parents not only at the beginning of the school year but all year long. Remember - it's not about joining your pack - it's about joining Scouting. C Cub Scouts Beyond the Badges There are lots of recognitions for Cub Scout besides the Ranks. New online resources can help you ensure that your Pack headed towards excellence. (Recommended for Pack Committees and Key-3) C Experience the Adventure Learn the details about the new Cub Scout Adventure Program and tips on how to most effectively deliver it to your Scouts. This isn t the same old Cub Scout program; it s an adventure! C A Scout is Thrifty Sometimes budgets are tight and funding is low. That should never stop a boy from becoming a Scout. Learn ways to keep costs low for families and about resources available to packs in need. C Camp Gadgets in PVC Boys love to build things but we are not all carpenters. There are some really cool and useful things that can be made out of this plumber s pal.

C ScoutBook ScoutBook is the BSA s newest tool to make your life easier as a Scouter. This user friendly software makes Pack and Den administration easier so that you can spend more time where it counts working with the boys! B NEW - Order of the Arrow- Ceremonies Ever wonder what the OA can do for your Troop or Pack? Come to this class and find out! Find out about different ceremonies out there and watch a Ceremonies team perform an OA Arrow of Light ceremony. END OF CUB SCOUT COLLEGE

15 BOY SCOUT COLLEGE Boy Scout College Period B Troop Outdoor Programs and Annual Planning (2 Hr Class) This course helps the Scouter understand how the Outdoor Program provides excitement to the troop and helps achieve the aims of Scouting. This session has been expanded to 2 hours so that we can conduct an interactive youth led annual planning event that incorporates the 36 themes of Scouting. BE PREPARED to participate in a hands on mock planning session that s right you ll be the Scouts and you ll do the planning! B Order of the Arrow- Ceremonies Ever wonder what the OA can do for your Troop or Pack? Come to this class and find out! Find out about different ceremonies out there and watch a Ceremonies team perform an OA Arrow of Light ceremony. B Developing Troop Leadership Discover different ways a troop can develop youth leaders, both formally and informally, to achieve the aims of Scouting. The National Youth Leadership Training Conference and the development of youth leadership training at the troop level will be discussed.

16 Boy Scout College Period B Women in Scouting (for Women Only) When Eve hits the trail will she be prepared to deal with a woman's unique concerns of clothing, comfort, and toilet etiquette? Learn how to avoid some of the mistakes women make when they become adult leaders in a Scouting unit. This class is a must for all female leaders! B Troop Secretaries & Troop Treasurers This course looks at the vital roles of the adult Secretary and Treasurer to a troop. The class will include ideas on how to mentor the Troop Historian and Scribe, the use of the Parent Resource Survey, and budget planning by the Troop Committee. Ideas for successful fundraising may also be discussed. B Merit Badge Counselor Training (2 Hr Class) Do you know what is expected of a Merit Badge Counselor? Are there really any requirements to be a Merit Badge Counselor? This session will help leaders develop and manage a quality Merit Badge program for their troop. This is really a "must take" class for anyone interested in becoming a Merit Badge Counselor. B Merit Badge Counselor Training (2 Hr Class) Do you know what is expected of a Merit Badge Counselor? Are there really any requirements to be a Merit Badge Counselor? This session will help leaders develop and manage a quality Merit Badge program for their troop. This is really a "must take" class for anyone interested in becoming a Merit Badge Counselor.

17 Boy Scout College Period B Troop High Adventure Opportunities (2 Hr Class) This two-hour class examines the logistics of providing for high adventure opportunities for Scout Troops and Venturing Crews. Class discussion will include: planning, age requirements, budgeting and execution of the high adventure program. Some local high adventure opportunities will be presented. This class will get you cranked for a high adventure trip! (2 Class Periods) B Advancement in Troops (2 Hr Class) This two-hour course is highly interactive and involves case studies to illustrate various real-life aspects of the advancement process in a troop. Emphasis is placed on how advancement achieves the aims of Scouting and the roles of various adults in the process. B Trail to Eagle Workshop (2 Hr Class) This two-hour session focuses on the process of Boy Scout advancement, especially from Life Rank to Eagle Scout. The responsibilities of the Unit, District, and Council will be discussed. In addition, the Eagle Scout project process and adult support (advisors and mentors) will be explored. Learn how important good record keeping is to an Eagle Scout candidate and the significance of his Eagle Scout Board of Review. (2 Class Periods) B Duct Tape and its ROLL in Scouting We will examine the many uses for this wonderful tool that has been known to simplify the life of many Scout leaders. This class takes a light-hearted view of the sticky stuff and the multitude of common tasks and functional objects that can be conquered and created through the use of duct tape. This is a "hands-on" course!

18 Boy Scout College Period B Eating on the Trail. What's in your backpack? Learn how you can keep the calories coming and pile on the flavor while keeping the weight of your backpack manageable for the long haul. If you plan to incorporate backpacking in your Scouting program, YOU NEED this class! B Photography - Getting the BIG Picture This class "zooms in" on how to improve your digital photography to maximize its value for your Troop and Council. Many tips will be offered to make your images have more impact. Explore ideas of composition, formatting, and image preparation for e- mail, printing, and web use. Learn how to have your images better tell the stories of the excitement and adventures enjoyed by your Scouts. B Scoutmaster Boot Camp (2 Hr Class) This session is essential for new Scoutmasters and Asst. Scoutmasters and builds upon knowledge gained from Leader Specific Training. Through discussion and role play learn effective Scoutmaster Conference skills. Learn what it takes to deliver a positive and meaningful Scoutmaster Minute. BE PREPARED and bring a Scoutmaster Minute to share. Time will be allotted for open discussion and frequently asked questions. (This is a 2 Period Class) B Conducting Boards of Review in your Troop This course provides the appropriate procedures for conducting your troop Boards of Review. National policies and "Best Practices" will be discussed. If you ever need to conduct a Board of Review, you need to be part of this class!

Electronic communication, best practices for communications, web sites, calendar, facebook, twitter, photo albums and mailing lists, etc. B Scout Camp Discussion Ever wondered what a certain camp was like? Had a great time at a camp? Had a bad one? Join this discussion group about scout camps in our area, from the mountains to the sea and everywhere in between. Bring your thoughts about the camps you have been to. B Troops and Crews Together How to keep Troops and Crews working FOR each other. B Advanced Photography If you have taken Photography - Getting the BIG Picture (B-223.1) this class is for you. Take your pictures to the next level.

20 Boy Scout College Period B Scouting for Older Youth / Retention of Older Scouts We have all seen it, as a scout starts getting older its not uncommon for them to not be as active in the scouting program. Sometimes they even disappear entirely. This course will address common issues that result in older scouts becoming less interested in the scouting program and an overview of programs specifically designed to help keep older scouts interested in the scouting movement. B Why Should I Send My Scouts to NYLT? This course will discuss the benefits of NYLT, the requirements and information to take back to your unit. B New - SM/ASM Leader Specific BSA Leader Training For Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters. One of the elements necessary to be a "Trained" Leader. **5 Class Periods** B Troop Committee Challenge This course will familiarize Troop committee members with the various responsibilities of the individual committee members. The goal is to help each Troop committee work as a team to improve the Scouting experience for adult and youth members.

22 GENERAL STUDIES COLLEGE General Studies College Period G Chartered Organization Representative Training - BSA Training (3 Hr Class) This course is for all Committee members. This course will give you an overview of Scouting; its mission, purpose and organization. You will learn what your responsibilities are as COR. At the end of this course you will earn a TRAINED PATCH. G Adult Recognition & Awards Learn techniques of successful recognition using theme-related ceremonies, fun leader recognition and how to make and use props. Learn to say, "Thank you," 1000 ways and 1000 times. G The Art of Storytelling Learn how to bring stories to life, how to introduce a theme, change the pace of a meeting, or put a finishing touch on a campfire.

23 General Studies College Period G Astronomy Learn some basics to introduce Scouts (and Scouters) to the wonders of the nighttime skies. G Cyber Chip - Internet Safety for Scouting The BSA Cyber Chip program encourages Scouts to learn how to use their electronic devices safely. Some of the issues the program addresses are protecting personal information, cyber bullying, appropriate use of social media, cell phones, texting, and netiquette. There are different requirements for different age levels. This ensures that the program is appropriate and relevant to the Scouts working on it. G Conservation Awards and Programs This course will cover the Conservation Good Turn Program, Hornaday, Leave No Trace and World Conservation Awards. Come learn more about these important programs. G Reaching the Hispanic Community The strategic approach of this program is to make Scouting more attuned to the expectations and needs of Hispanic families, while dispelling some of the most common scouting myths held by Latinos.

24 General Studies College Period G Duty to God Most of our units are sponsored by religious institutions. However, all members of a unit may not necessarily be members of the sponsoring religious organization. Each faith tradition has a unique approach to their religious award. This course provides an overview of the various religious awards with insights on how to encourage youth and adults to pursue them and suggestions on how to appropriately recognize the award in the unit. G After Wood Badge You have earned your beads. What now? G Knots & Lashings (12 per class limit) (2 Hr Class) Learn Boy Scout basic knots. A review of all knots and hitches required for advancement. These skills were a staple in pioneer life and therefore a foundational element of Scouting.

25 General Studies College Period G My Scouting Tools In an era of information on demand, the Internet has become a virtual warehouse of information. Wading through all of it can take days until you find what you need. Come learn about resources that are already identified and strategies for finding the "needle" in the field of haystacks. G Scouting History It all began in England with one man's vision, but how did Scouting develop in America? Learn about the history and lore that makes up modern Scouting practices. Discover the origins of terms like Dan Beard, Brown Sea Island, Wood Badge and more. Bringing the culture of Scouting home to your unit will not only help your leader s better implement programs and activities, but also strengthen retention of both youth and adult members. G Scouting with Disabilities Discuss BSA policies concerning Scouts with special needs. Learn new ideas and skills that will help you with become a better leader. This course is for leaders who have Scouts with special needs.

Discover how this dynamic 21st Century executive training program can strengthen not only you as a Scout leader, but also your business, professional and personal endeavors as well. G Wilderness First Aide (Overview) This type of first aid differs from standard first aid. Healthcare is often many hours or even days away. This could mean the difference between life and death for an injured person. Come learn why this is a critical skill set for those pursuing backcountry adventures. G Wildlife in North Carolina Become familiar with the flora and fauna of our home state from the agency tasked with managing it. From fish to fowl, learn what you can help your Scouts discover in the great outdoors that is North Carolina. 27 General Studies College Period G Campfire Gadgets & Gourmet Cooking (2 Hr Class) Learn easy ways to teach boys outdoor cooking methods, including Dutch ovens, Box ovens and foil cooking. Fun projects geared for quick preparation, easy clean-up and satisfied Scouts. We'll also show you a variety of cooking gadgets. There is an additional $10 Fee for this course. G A Scouter's Guide to Taxes Have you ever wondered what Scouting expenses can be deducted from your taxes? Can I deduct my new Scout uniform? How about mileage to/from Scout meetings? Come and learn from a Certified Financial Planner and Scout Leader what the rules are for a Scouter's taxes. Guaranteed to be informative and entertaining while helping you maximize your tax savings every year! G Taking Advantage of Social Networking Welcome to the 21st Century. If you are new, or an old hand, at using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or other social forums; then this course is for you. We will explore how to create an account and how you can use social networking to keep in touch with family, friends, and members of your Troop, Pack, or Crew. Class will include discussion of potential dangers with social networking sites as well.

28 General Studies College Period G Woodcarving Learn all about woodcarving and projects for your unit. Learn safety, various tools for carving, types of wood and forms of carving. Come and learn from a woodcarving expert on how to teach woodcarving to your Scouts. G Survival Bracelet Making Have you ever needed six feet of cord while you were on a hike? Learn how to make a special survival bracelet to use in an emergency. It is easy, fun and you can even use it as special recognition for youth or adults. G Compass & Map Reading / GPS Learn the basic compass and map reading skills to navigate on hikes or just for fun. There will be lots of hands-on and practice the skills learned, weather permitting. Bring a compass. G Introduction to Plant Identification Identifying basic plants are important for scouting. It is a requirement for the First Class Rank too. Come learn some easy tips and tricks to identifying some basic plant life here in NC. It just might save your life too.

29 General Studies College Period G BSA Leave No Trace 101 (3 Hr Class) This course is the minimum training recommended for all adults and older scouts who teach Leave No Trace in their unit. This course is an introduction to the principles of Leave No Trace, it s history, and it s importance to the BSA for both scout advancement and Outdoor Conservation. The course will include information on the LNT requirements for various positions and awards. Upon completion, participants will receive a training card and the course is entered into your BSA training record. G Succession Planning - Finding Your Replacement Who will take your place when you retire or take on new responsibilities within scouting? Will there be a void or a qualified replacement? We will cover the basics of creating a succession plan to ensure to that your unit will Be Prepared when a leadership vacancy occurs. G Backpacking 101 Make backpacking fun, not work. There are two parts to every backpacking trip hiking and camping. Unfortunately, it s difficult to optimize one without sacrificing the other. A super light pack, for instance, makes for great hiking but uncomfortable camping; while an everything but the kitchen sink approach makes for great camping but miserable hiking. This course will teach you how to pack light enough so that you love the hiking, but not so light that you compromise your safety or comfort in camp.

Admit it, camping and hiking are the real reasons most boys join scouts in the first place. Then add in some nature so that scouts understand the land they are camping on, and you have the essence of what US scouting was founded on over a hundred years ago. G What is Powder Horn? Are you a Scouter leading a group of older Boy Scouts that are not interested in the simple Scout Skills anymore? Are you a Venture Advisor that wants to help the Crew President open doors of opportunity? This class will help you understand what's out there for you. G For Course Directors This Session is for Training Course Directors, Potential Course Directors, or anyone who is interested in knowing more about running BSA Training Courses. The Session will cover the necessary documentation to get a Course approved by the Volunteer Support and Training Services Committee as well as best practices and guidelines for putting on a successful training course. Time will also be allocated to discuss the obstacles in putting on a course and ways to overcome them.

There is an additional $10 Fee for this course. You will learn about our new Council Standard Operating Procedures, including proper supervision and training. Learn how to access the Council firearms and facilities to run a safe and exciting shooting sports event. Learn about official certification programs and how to conduct shooting events for scouts at other locations.

Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly! are not simply programs and concepts for camping and recreating, they are the cutting edge of Scouting values. You will be introduced to the principles and the requirements for the brand new Outdoor Ethics Awareness and Outdoor Ethics Action awards. 35 VENTURING COLLEGE ADULT Ventruing College Period V Venturing Crew Committee Challenge (3 Hr Class) Every youth deserves a trained leader, and there is no better time to get that training then during university of scouting. This Leader specific training course is based on the new Venturing Program changes announced at the BSA National Meeting in This course is intended for all Venturing Committee Members even ones who have previously taken Venturing Leader Specific. In order to be considered trained as aa Venturing Committee Member this course must be completed. Current certification in Venturing Youth Protection Training is required to attend this course. V Overcoming Challenges in Co-Ed Scouting Mixing teenage boy & girls and taking them off for a weekend trip, what could possibly go wrong. Leaders of Co-Ed scouting programs like Explorers, Venturing, and Sea Scouts all face issues that a traditional Scout Master will never encounter, this course will provide you with the knowledge and tools needed to help address the challenges you face in co-ed scouting.
