7 The name of Argentina It derives from the word Argentum in Latin, which means silver. The origin of this name goes back to the voyages of the first Conquistadors to the River Plate. The castaways of the Juan Diaz de Solis expedition found Indians in the region who gave them silver objects. They took back to Spain, around 1524, news of the existence of the Sierra del Plata (Silver Range), rich in this metal. After that, the Portuguese called Solís s river Río de la Plata (Silver River). Years later, the Spaniards also adopted that name. Since 1860, Argentine Republic is the country s official name. How to get there All the airlines that fly to Argentina arrive at the Ministro Pistarini (Ezeiza) International Airport, located 35 kilometres from the city of Buenos Aires, the Federal Capital. Given the huge expanse of the country, the plane is the most suitable form of transportation over long distances, enabling travellers to avail themselves of ground services at destination for shorter hauls. Location, extension and borders Population and language Located in the South American Southern Cone, and consequently in the Southern Hemisphere, Argentina covers an area of approximately 3.8 million square kilometres, of which 2.8 million are on the Continent and the rest in Antarctica. Its 3,800 kilometres in length extend from 22 to 55 degrees of latitude south. It shares borders with Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile with a border perimeter of 9,376 kilometres. The coastal area along the Atlantic Ocean is 4, 725 kilometres long. The current population of Argentina is approximately 37 million, of which almost a half lives in the Federal Capital and the province of Buenos Aires. These figures indicate a density of 13.2 inhabitants per square kilometre. The official language is Spanish. In Buenos Aires, it adopts its own, peculiar dialect. Religion There is total religious freedom in Argentina, although the official one is Roman Catholic. Other religions include Protestantism, Judaism, Islam, Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox and other faiths. Currency Argentina s official currency is the Peso, which is pegged one-to-one with the US dollar. There are bills of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 pesos and coins of 1, 2 and 5 pesos and 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. Methods of payment Entry formalities Although the dollar is widely accepted, foreign currencies are exchanged into local currency by banks and authorised exchange dealers. The most frequently accepted credit cards are American Express, VISA, Diners and Master Card. It is difficult to exchange travellers cheques outside Buenos Aires. Tips It is customary to leave 10 percent of the bill in coffee shops and restaurants and to tip porters, bellboys and ushers. A valid passport, with or without a visa, depending on the country of origin. Ask at your nearest embassy or consulate. Visitors arriving from non-bordering countries are exempt of all taxes on personal goods and new items valued at up to $300 and $300 extra if the goods are acquired in duty free shops located in Argentina. No vaccination certificates are required on entering the country, except against cholera and yellow fever for those passengers arriving from countries where the disease is endemic.

8 Telephones Public telephones work with cards that can be acquired in kiosks and telephone company offices, or coins. There are also call centres where you pay cash (open 24 hours). To call from abroad, the country code must be dialled, which is 54, followed by the area code of the wanted. In the city of Buenos Aires it is 11. In local long distance calls one has to first dial 0 followed by the area code. To call abroad from Argentina, 00 should be dialled first, followed by country code and city code. What clothes to take Remember that in the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are opposite to those in the Northern one. In October, the temperature is mild, with an average of 11C minimum and a maximum of 20C. Electricity Electricity in Argentina is 220 Volts (50Hz)
