1 Job Description Nurse Overview The Practice Nurse is a multi-skilled practitioner who, as part of a team, contributes to the provision of high-quality health care in the general practice setting. Her/his function is to carry out the role(s) of clinician, manager, educator researcher, consultant, counsellor and advisor and is accountable to the practice for these functions. The Practice Nurse is accountable to the Managing Medical Principal for clinical issues and Practice Manager for non-clinical issues. The Practice Nurse is expected to be: Punctual. Neatly dressed. Of tidy appearance befitting professional status and duties. Well spoken and able to clearly express him/herself. Qualifications Primary Qualification This person must be a REGISTERED OR ENROLLED NURSE, with their own medical indemnity insurance, registered pursuant to the Territory s Nursing Act to practice as a nurse. If this person is an Enrolled Nurse, he/she will receive direct professional supervision from a Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse will be required to supervise, support and mentor the Practice s Enrolled Nurses as required and pursuant to the Territory s Nursing Act. Additional Qualifications Further certificates in Child and Adolescent Health, Mental Health, Women s Health, Community Health, sterilization of instruments and Practice Management would all be viewed as advantageous. Additional Experience In addition to General Nursing, experience in childcare, surgical assisting and General Practice would be viewed as advantageous. Page 1 of 6

2 Statement of Duties Clinical services The following is a list of duties to be undertaken by the Practice Nurse. From time to time s/he will be expected to undertake relief work, and tasks may vary from those listed. All designated tasks are to be performed to a satisfactory standard. The Practice Nurse will provide nursing treatment to patients and, where appropriate, delegated medical services in the clinical setting. For example: Carry out an assessment of the health status of individuals and families using a holistic framework. Work in partnership with patients on identified issues, within the scope and practice of the Practice Nurse s duties. Systematically collect comprehensive information concerning the patient s level of health. Provide initial contact and ongoing consultations that includes but are not limited to: - Telephone and situation triage - History taking - Collection of data, including blood pressure weight urinalysis - Carrying out lung function tests ECGs ear checks - Measuring blood glucose - Collection of specimens and blood samples - Child venipuncture - Carrying out pregnancy tests - Reviewing reports and results - Initiate first aid and emergency treatment - Administer oxygen - Nebulise patients - Manage minor soft tissue injuries - Apply splints - Dressings as required Page 2 of 6

3 - Steri stripping suturing - Give injections / administer parenteral medications - Prepare and assist with special procedures - Prepare and assist with minor surgery - Chaperone medical or gynaecological examinations as required Assist the General Practitioner with the management of chronic medical problems by providing, for example, ongoing: Diabetes monitoring Blood pressure monitoring Asthma, peak flow monitoring Health promotion The Practice Nurse will provide the following general and specific health screening to the practice patients within guidelines and protocols. Where necessary, assist with organising and maintaining call-recall systems. This may include: Post natal checks. Baby checks. Cervical screening. Injections. Dealing with diabetic patients. Dealing with hypertensive patients. Immunisation programs. Breast examinations. Health education Where applicable, the Practice Nurse will provide health education for individuals, families and groups that is culturally sensitive and appropriate. Utilising available leaflets, information and fact sheets, he/she will give support and access to appropriate skills for health maintenance and prevention of accident and illness. This may include: Health education about self care, eg viral upper respiratory tract infections Health education about risk factors, eg dietary advice, exercise programs, stress management, smoking, cot death, melanoma Health education for chronic diseases to prevent recurrences or deterioration, e.g. diabetes, asthma Page 3 of 6

4 Teaching of self monitoring procedures - Peak flow monitoring - Use of inhalers - Recording of blood pressure - Blood pressure monitoring and urinalysis Teaching skills, e.g. - Simple dressings - Injection techniques Co-ordination of Services The Practice Nurse will refer to, and collaborate and co-ordinate with other health workers to ensure optimal patient care, giving due regard to ethics and confidentiality. The Practice Nurse may act as a care giver or co-ordinator of case management. The Practice Nurse will co-ordinate with other health professionals on preventative health, promotion and community based programs. The Practice Nurse will assist with registration of patients, where practicable. Counselling Where appropriate, the Practice Nurse needs to demonstrate the desire to assist patients with taking primary responsibility for their physical and emotional health through: Providing counselling and support services, eg stress management. Assisting the practitioner with ante natal and post natal visits. Providing family planning counselling and advice. Record Keeping The Practice Nurse is to maintain purposeful, on-going, updated records and to monitor and record fridge / vaccine temperatures as per Infection Control Guidelines. Maintenance of Supplies and Equipment The Registered Nurse shall be responsible for (medical) stock control including the following: Ordering medicines, vaccines and other medical consumable supplies / equipment. 5 Ordering and storage of vaccines - maintenance of the cold chain. Ordering educational literature. Sterilising equipment. Cleaning treatment area. Restocking doctors rooms if required. Maintaining procedures for checking / ordering of pharmacy drugs. Being responsible for sharps and contaminated waste management. Advocacy The Practice Nurse acts as a patient advocate protecting and enhancing the individual s rights. Triage and Medical Emergencies Identify medical emergencies appropriately. Notify doctor immediately in case of medical emergency. Call ambulance or other appropriate emergency service in case of medical emergency. Provide first aid for injuries and other emergencies. Other Duties The Registered Nurse shall assist in reception duties (see Medical Receptionists Job Description) when there are no clinical duties to attend to and shall take directions from the Practice Manager. The clinical duties shall always take precedence over office duties. Additional duties and responsibilities as they are determined to be appropriate by the Practice Manager and or Managing Medical Principal. Research The Practice Nurse may be asked to assist with research from time to time, as may be required. Such research shall generally be in the form of case note audits. Professional Development The Managing Medical Principal encourages further training by allowing time off when appropriate. Page 5 of 6

Ethics Maintain patient confidentiality. Awareness of the principles of medical ethics. Workplace Safety Contribute to the security and safety of the practice environment. Minimise public risk in the clinic. Clean and sterilise instruments. Be familiar and act in accordance with infection control guidelines. Handle contaminated waste appropriately. Handle non-contaminated waste appropriately. Handle sharps safely. Respond to sharps injury appropriately. Handle vaccines safely. Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Policy of the Practice. Background Knowledge (desirable) Understanding of the current and future role of GPs in the health care industry. Understanding of the requirements for General Practice training, vocational registration, continuing medical education (CME) and quality assurance. Understanding of General Practice Accreditation. Understanding of the role of allied health practitioners and their relationship with General Practitioners. Understanding of medico-legal issues. Understanding of the roles of the AMA, RACGP, Medical Board and Health Services Complaints Commissioner with regard to patient complaints. Demonstrated understanding of medical terminology.
