1 RICHMOND, VA TAMPA, FL COMPARISON BOUNDARIES 1: The Richmond MSA The Richmond MSA consists of 20 jurisdictions and has a land area of 5,717 square miles. It includes the 4 cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights and the 16 counties of Amelia, Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King William, Louisa, New Kent, Powhatan, Prince George, and Sussex. 2 2: The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida MSA The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida MSA is comprised of the 4 counties of Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas. The total land area of the MSA is 2,554.5 square miles. OVERVIEW Tampa is located in western coast of the western Florida. The MSA is home to 7 Fortune1000 companies (3 are in the top 500). The companies in the Fortune 500 include Tech Data, Wellcare Health Plus and Jabil Circuit. Tampa has been rated one of the top outdoor cities in the United States and the one of the top cities for twenty-somethings. The MSA s three largest employment sectors of employment: education and health services, health scientific services, and retail trade. The high amount of employment in the education and health science can be attributed to having the University of South Florida (USF) located in the region. USF has one of the top 15 largest campuses (student population) in the United States with an enrollment of around 45,000 students. In fact, Florida has 3 of the top 10 largest campuses enrollment in the US. The MSA also has large number of hospitals, totaling 42 in all. Tampa itself has 10 hospitals. Tampa has an extensive sports culture. The city has a team in 3 of the 4 major North American sports leagues (no NBA team); Tampa Bay Rays-MLB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers-NFL and Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL). Moreover, Tampa is home to 6 MLB spring training camps and is the host city of the Grapefruit League, which is the preseason for much of MLB. It is also home of 3 NCAA Football bowl games and has hosted 4 Super Bowls. The Richmond MSA, located in Central Virginia, is the Commonwealth s capital city and home to 10 Fortune 1000 companies; 6 of which are in the top 500. They include Altria Group, Dominion Resources, Genworth Financial, Owens and Minor, CarMax and MeadWestvaco.

The companies in the Fortune 500 include Tech Data, Wellcare Health Plus and Jabil Circuit.

3 Richmond was named one of the top three Best Outdoor Cities by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine, as well as the Best River Town in America by Outside Magazine in As of 2012, Richmond s three largest employment sectors are: health care and social assistance, retail trade, and educational services. The Richmond MSA includes Virginia Commonwealth University, which is one of the largest in the United States. VCU's Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Hospitals is the most comprehensive teaching medical center in Virginia and is regularly ranked among the top hospitals in America. VCU Medical School is one of the nation's largest medical schools. Recently the Washington Redskins set up their training camp in the area, which aided in the regions tourism. Richmond is also home to the Flying Squirrels, a minor league affiliate to the San Francisco Giants in the MLB. HIGHER EDUCATION ASSETS Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA The State University System of Florida is a group of 12 public universities within the State of Florida. This organization along with the Florida College system (which represents the 28 community colleges in the state) comprises Florida s system of public higher education. University of South Florida is ranked in the top 100 public universities (97) and in the top 200 universities overall (170) in the nation. USF is one of the main research hubs in Florida and is one of the fastest growing research institutions in the country according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. University of Tampa is host to one of the top Business Schools in the country according to the Princeton Review. In fact, on the 2009 version of the list, the University of Tampa was ranked in the top 15 of all business schools in the country. Richmond MSA The Richmond metro area is home to fifteen 4-year and eleven 2-year and specialty institutions of higher education with total enrollment of nearly 80,000 and more than 14,000 degrees conferred annually. A full range of associate, undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees are available including medicine, business, law, and engineering. There are 163 institutions of higher education located within 100 miles of Richmond, which have a total of 134,471 enrolled students. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a major research university with 32,400 students and 10,500 full-time and part-time employees located on two campuses. VCU has 15 schools and one college, including five health sciences schools Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, and Allied Health Professions. VCU s Brandcenter has been ranked the #1 Advertising school in the country by multiple magazines (O Toole, Creativity Magazine, etc.). The VCU Health System (hospitals and physicians) has 7,935 employees (FTEs) and was one of the area s largest private employers in VCU School of Engineering opened in 1997 and has grown to an enrollment of more than 1,400. Degree programs are offered in Biomedical, Chemical and Life Science, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical and Nuclear engineering and in Computer Science.

4 The University of Richmond is a very highly ranked university in the country. Overall it is ranked number 73 in the country, and has both a law and business school that are constantly ranked by numerous publications as the best in the country. Other four-year schools include Randolph-Macon College, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, Strayer University and others. Four-year schools have a combined enrollment of about 52,000. Richard Bland College is Virginia s only state supported junior college. J. Sargeant Reynolds and John Tyler Community Colleges serve the Richmond metro area with seven locations. They serve around 28,000 students with credit courses annually. An additional 15,000 students and 700 companies are served each year with non-credit classes and customized training through the Community College Workforce Alliance. COMPARISON Although the Richmond MSA is much larger in land area than the Tampa MSA, Tampa s total population is more than two times larger. Of the 2.7 million people that live in the Tampa MSA, 1.9 million are over the age of 25. Conversely, just over 800,000 people are over the age of 25 in the Richmond MSA. Tampa s civilian workforce is twice as large as Richmond s. The breakdown of employment by industry is pretty similar in both MSAs. The most noticeable difference is within the public administration sector, as Richmond has 7.1% employment within that sector and Tampa has 3.9%. There is also a noticeable difference in median family income. In Richmond, the median income is just over $73K whereas in Tampa it is around $58K. This same trend is true for the mean family income, as in Richmond, it is around $91K and in Tampa, it is $76K. In fact, 21% of families in Richmond earn less than $35K, where in Tampa it is 28%. The median household income, at $59K, is also much higher in Richmond compared to Tampa, where it is $47K. Educational attainment is higher in Richmond; 31 percent of the Richmond area s population has a bachelor s degree or higher compared to 26 percent for Tampa. The cost of living is higher in Richmond according ACCRA data. Richmond overall is about 2% higher than the national average compared to Tampa that is about 7% lower than the national average. The median age is about three years younger in Richmond compared to Tampa; 38 and 41 respectively. KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER Tampa s investment in sports is very important to the economic impacts of the area. The sport that has the most impact on the economy is baseball. Tampa is home for the Grapefruit league, 6 MLB spring training camps and a MLB team (Rays). As a result, the area is very invested into the sport, which is even further proved by the major push to build a new stadium for the Ray in the coming years. Outside of the size and population numbers of the two MSAs, they seem to have a few common areas. The employment by industry is very similar for both MSAs, for the exception of the public administration. One area of interest is that of Tampa s top 10 private employers, six are in the health care field. Out of those six, five are hospitals. This is in comparison to Richmond, which has three of the top 10 private employers in the health care field.
