6 CONSTRUCTION SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) In order to meet the high demand in the coming years for quality skilled workers in the Construction Industry, West Credit Secondary School is excited to offer this unique program. The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) at WCSS involves students completing a package of courses that meets the needs of all students with an interest in developing the skills necessary for a career in the Construction Industry. The Construction Industry acknowledges and supports the program through certification and appropriate industry placements. In order to complete an SHSM in Construction, students: 1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain Reach Ahead experience connected to the student s post secondary plans.
