1 Choices for Secondary Students Limestone District School Board 1
2 Focus Programs Focus Programs are packages of courses offered in Limestone District Secondary Schools that concentrate on a particular field of interest or training to provide students with both academic challenges and work related experiences which provide a foundation in a career or area of study. Focus Programs are designed to help high school students make well informed career decisions and to assist them with a smooth transition to post secondary education or the world of work. Please note the following: 1. Transportation may be provided to students living within the Limestone District School Board, but is not guaranteed. The host school will provide specific transportation accommodations as required. 2. Most programs have a limited enrolment. Specific prerequisites, auditions and/or interviews may be required prior to the final selection of students. 3. Students remain eligible to participate in all extra curricular activities at their home school, as well as receive a Student ID card from their home school while taking a Focus Program. 4. Students who are in their final year of high school will remain on the potential graduate list of their home school. Students wishing to graduate from the Focus Program school must notify the Guidance Department at both their home school and the school at which they are taking the Focus Program. 5. Focus Program students in the SHSM will graduate with their Red Seal and their Ontario Secondary School Diploma [OSSD] from the school where the 30th credit was granted. Students may still arrange with guidance to walk across the stage with their peers at their home school. Future transcripts will be available at the school where the 30 th credit was granted. 6. Please be aware that Focus Programs are optional. As a result, some cost recovery fees may apply. Due to the very specialized nature of some programs they may involve additional equipment, specific clothing, travel arrangements or supplemental training costs that are not covered by classroom funding. In the event the program selected does require additional cost recovery, the program will provide the student with details of the costs involved prior to the application process and, where applicable will also describe the plan for unused or surplus funds and how they will be returned to the student. Should a student be interested in acquiring potential support to help with equipment or material costs for the focus program, please speak with a guidance counselor at your home school. 51 James Let s Make a Demo 02/03 Currently singer/song writer, past studio manager at Humber College recording studio and graduate of Humber College music program writes: My experience in the "Let's Make a Demo" program was and will continue to be completely indispensable. I honestly can't express the head start I had moving into post secondary and eventually the entertainment industry. Daniel Renovations Plus Just give me a chance! Came the statement from then sixteen year old Daniel Thompson, upon his arrival to LCVI and the Renovations Plus Program. This being his fourth school in less than three years, the anxious young Daniel was eager to find his place and finally get on with what he was unable to accomplish elsewhere. With only three credits to show for grade nine and a handful since, Daniel found passion, not always in content but rather in the pride and the accomplishment he felt in the work itself. Stephone Katarokwi Aboriginal School This school is an awesome school. We alternate between academic work and cultural teachings and activities. I love learning about my cultural heritage. My favourite activities so far have been making our own drums out of rawhide that we made and singing, making maple syrup, helping our Elder make a sweat lodge and also being trained in First Aid. I wouldn't be finishing high school if I wasn't here. 51
