3 What is this course? An EP-3 seminar (a core requirement for class of 2013 and later) An introduction to concepts of video game design and the game industry, cont d What is this course not? A course primarily about video game implementation A real computer science class Course requires no programming. No pre-requisites. Open to all majors.
4 Requirements of any EP seminar: Writing Minimum of 15 pages of writing that has gone through at least one cycle of feedback and revision We will fulfill this by two term papers Oral expression Minimum of 20% of class time devoted to student writing and oral expression We will fulfill this by student presentations, cont d
5 Grade will be based on: attendance and (15%), a midterm paper (6 8 pages, 20%), an in-class presentation (20 minutes plus Q&A, 20%), a game project (20%), and a final term paper (9 10 pages, 25%)., cont d
6 15% of grade This is a seminar: attendance is required. If you must miss a class, get excused in advance Graded on 5-point scale: Mere presence is 3 points Contributing to discussion adds 1 or 2 points Arriving late or detracting from discussion subtracts 1 or 2 points Check your grades on Blackboard, cont d
7 Midterm paper 6 8 pages, 20% of grade Final paper 9 10 pages, 25% of grade Each will go through stages of: proposal first draft, feedback final draft First drafts should be at least 2/3 of final length proposals & drafts are graded only on timeliness Papers graded on: writing quality & length organization & clarity research & citations content & depth, cont d
