GL Assessment Baseline for Cambridge
Who are we? GL Assessment is the leading provider of formative assessments to UK schools. We have a distinct philosophy of good assessment practice, emerging from more than 30 years experience. Research is at the heart of everything we do. Our Early Years assessments include the WellComm Toolkit, the York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension, the British Ability Scales and the Schedule of Growing Skills. We provide assessments for very young children to the NHS, Educational Psychologists, Health Visitors, Speech and Language Therapists, and SENCOs and teachers in EY settings, schools and children s centres.
Our Baseline GL Assessment has developed Baseline, a Reception baseline assessment for children aged 4-5 years. Baseline was created by a team working from a range of assessment materials that had recently been published for the Early Years. It represents a coming together of established, reliable assessments for young children in a single assessment. Like all of our standardised assessments, Baseline was trialled with large numbers of children to produce a national benchmark. Complies with stringent DfE criteria for the Reception baseline.
Trials Worked with 50 schools during the autumn term 2014 to collect data on a sample of 1560 children in England - the basis for the standardisation. 500 children were also reassessed to ensure reliability and consistency. EAL pupils constituted 18% of the sample, which is nationally representative. We took feedback from teachers who administered Baseline as our basis of guidance on how to use the assessment with children with SEND.
Baseline overview One-to-one assessment delivered on two tablets one for the child and one for the teacher. Oral/touch-based, with full-colour illustrations - highly appealing to young children. Meets all DfE requirements - plus added value of Standardised Age Scores and extensive narrative. Complete in under 25 minutes, in up to 3 sessions. Optional end of Reception assessment measures progress over the year.
The Questions Baseline contains three sections that measure a pupil s stage in language, literacy and mathematics. Language and Communication Phoneme Awareness Mathematics A range of questions for grammar, vocabulary and understanding. There are two scales assessing expression and comprehension. Removing an initial or final sound from a word and identify initial or final sounds from a pseudoword. Counting, simple calculations, and language for maths.

Standardised Assessments Our standardised assessments allow each child to be compared to a nationally representative sample of children of the same age, via the Standard Age Score. They provide a reliable benchmark for tracking pupils progress essential for schools looking to demonstrate their effectiveness at supporting all students. Results are adjusted to account for the child s exact age, which is significant given that the ages in a typical year group will vary by almost 12 months. This process is both fair and accurate and can be used across many areas of development and learning.

Language and Communication A range of questions for grammar, vocabulary and understanding. There are two scales assessing expression and comprehension.
Pupil s tablet Teacher s tablet In this question the pupil selects the response by touching the screen. For other questions, a verbal response is required. Q: Show me the short sock. The teacher swipes to the next screen and the question is scored.
Phoneme Awareness Removing an initial or final sound from a word and identify initial or final sounds from a pseudo-word.
The pupil s screen shows only the image Pupil s tablet This icon indicates that this is a teaching item. The audio explains the task but at this point the teacher can offer further explanation to make sure that the pupil understands what they have to do. Teacher s tablet P: Say seesaw Q: Say it again but don t say saw.
Phoneme Awareness 2 Removing an initial or final sound from a word and identify initial or final sounds from a pseudo-word.
Pupil s tablet In this assessment the pupil has to isolate the initial or final sound in a non-word. Teacher s tablet The ear reminds the pupil to listen carefully. Responses are given verbally and marked by the teacher on the teacher tablet.
Maths Counting, simple calculations, and language for maths.
Pupil s tablet Teacher s tablet P: This fisherman wants to catch five big fish. Q: Can you show me five big fish?
PSED example question Situational prompts: Possible conversation prompts: Who needs help here? Show me. What would you say to help them? Would you say: You are doing really well What would you do to help them? Would you say: I can do that better than you
Cost Individual administrations 3.95 per pupil - price includes all reports and free training and support. Our package will be covered by DfE funding. Order now, and you will be invoiced in September - schools must order by 30 April 2015 to use Baseline in September In 2015, schools will pay and the DfE will reimburse them directly. In 2016, funding will be incorporated in the school budget.
What do teachers say? The children ask, When is it my turn? and Do I get to do that?. You don t get that kind of response with other assessments! Rhys Penny, Cedar Road Primary, Northampton The children really enjoyed using the tablets they found them fun and it was very straightforward. Melissa Woodhouse, Treowen Primary School Baseline is an accurate and comprehensive measure, delivered in a way that totally engages the children. Lianne Morrison, St Christopher s, Hove
