9 PhD career development in academia and in industry Time (Knowledge, Skills) Full Professor Lecturer Postdoc(s) Finishing PhD Starting PhD INDUSTRY & SOCIETY People Career Development Perhaps 10% of PhDs will pursue the academic ladder (up to full professor) 90% of starting PhDs will grow into (leading) positions in industry and society! And: industry determines the GDP, which is positively correlated with university funding! Conclusions for academia: Dual funnel role & responsibility! Equip PhD students with an open mind towards industrial and societal issues, and foster their skills to address them!
