7 T H E H Y D R O G E N O F F I C E D E M O N S T R AT I O N C E N T R E Efficient, clean and carbon neutral The green hydrogen cycle An energy cycle where surplus renewable energy is stored using water, and from which water is the only by-product. The project will develop a 1200m2 modern office building to house the Hydrogen Office Demonstration and Test Centre, an incubation centre for small businesses, and flexible office accommodation. Aims The Hydrogen Office is a cutting edge project to demonstrate the role that energy efficiency, renewables and hydrogen can play in reducing the future impact of energy security of supply concerns and climate change. The project will promote the potential of using hydrogen as a means of storing surplus renewable energy, for either a time where renewable energy may not be available (i.e. a period with no wind), or for an application that renewable energy may not be suitable (i.e. a car). This ability to guarantee an energy supply enables renewably generated hydrogen to be used for higher value applications, creating a locally generated and low carbon alternative to oil and gas; reducing future green house gas emissions, and reliance on imported energy from countries like Iraq, Iran and Russia. The energy system The building will be powered by a novel renewable and hydrogen energy system, using renewable energy directly when available, whilst storing surplus energy as hydrogen for a proportion of the buildings needs for periods where renewables are unable to meet demand. Benefits The Hydrogen Office Demonstration and Test Centre will work to accelerate the development of the hydrogen and fuel cell industry in Scotland, increasing: the rate of deployment of low carbon energy sources; the ability to develop energy independence; and the development of green jobs in Scotland.
