1 Bath College Open for Business Music Production HNC Course Type: Degree Level Level: 4 Duration: 1 year Location: City Centre Campus This course will prepare you for the challenges and opportunities for a career as an electronic music producer in one of many related industries such as DJ, MC, etc. This unique course will help you to become a skilled practitioner and to develop specialist knowledge and transferable skills in the areas of electronic music production, and is suitable for DJs, MCs and producers who wish to perfect beats in the electronic music industry. This HNC programme covers theoretical and practical aspects of programming, audio engineering and production, computer music, sampling, synthesis, live sound, mastering and producing and performing radio shows. You will expand your knowledge and expertise through working with industry DJs and producers, many of whom have their own record labels and professional careers. Current staff include Gatekeeper, Wedge, Arkist and Mark Smithers. This course reflects the largely freelance nature of the music production industry, with many assignments based around standard industry practice. It keeps pace with the ever-changing professional market by the use of industry-standard equipment and the implementation of modern technology (e.g. CDJs, Ableton Live, Logic, Protools, Native Instruments Komplete, etc). The course will help you to prepare a portfolio of high quality tracks for record companies, promoters and potential employers or further study. You will be able to source musicians from several other music courses we run such as our popular Music Production foundation degree and our HNC/HND Music Performance course. Aims of the Course: Offer students the opportunity to develop as an original artist Develop your ability to perfect your tracks using synthesis, sampling, sequencing and audio 1 / 5

2 recording Produce high quality tracks which will meet local music industry needs e.g. Bristol and Bath Provide specialised experiential studies which are directly relevant to the music vocation/profession Enable students to make an immediate or improved contribution in employment particularly in the music industry Provide progression to higher level studies Develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes which will enhance their careers Offer a route to continued higher education Develop students' ability to learn independently and to carry this forward for future career development. What topics are covered? The programme comprises two core units together with additional specialist units which will be achieved by attending college for three evenings per week and additional gigs in professional venues. The course contains a mixture of level 4 and level 5 units. Some key aspects of the course are: Sampling & synthesis Mixdowns Logic tuition DJ performances Sequencing Protools tuition Reaktor tuition Ableton Live tuition Traktor Scratch Pro tuition CDJ tuition Producing music radio shows Audio mastering Collaborations & remixes What are the entry requirements? A-levels and equivalents: normally a minimum of three relevant A-levels, equivalent to 240 UCAS points or preferably higher. Five GCSE grade C passes which should include maths, 2 / 5

3 English language, music or a relevant subject BTEC: an appropriate National Diploma, preferably with at least DMM grades Mature and international students: considered on an individual basis taking into account validated access or bridging courses in appropriate subjects, accreditation for prior achievement, approved foreign qualifications Interview is by audition. You must bring a portfolio CD of original tracks and be able to show material that has been uploaded to the internet. You will get more information via the interview letter. This course is suitable for DJs, producers and MCs, but all must be able to produce music. This course would not suit a pure MC or DJ who does not produce music. Who is the awarding body? Edexcel How will I be assessed? All assessment is by assignment e.g. productions, recordings, original songs, essay. There are no formal examinations. Students are required to play external professional gigs, create DIY record labels, take part in radio shows, produce radio shows that feature their original tracks, submit tracks regularly to deadlines, upload tracks to public sites, respond to feedback and take part in peer review of each other s tracks. Units are graded pass, merit or distinction and you must achieve at least a pass grade in all units to be eligible for the award. What can I do after this course? Successful completion of the HNC could mean you are offered a place on a second year to top-up to our full HND Music Technology. After this point you can apply to do year three at a university and achieve a full BA (Hons). 3 / 5

4 What funding is available? You can apply for a loan to cover your tuition fees and a maintenance grant/loan for living expenses. Business, Music, Media & Performing Arts Where will I need to go on my first day? On your first day, please report to the Reception in Roper Building. What do I need to bring? All musicians need their own professional studio headphones. Singers need to bring in their own dynamic mic and XLR cable. DJs must bring their own styluses and vinyl/cds/tracks. MIDI keyboards are supplied. There are fully equipped Logic rooms but it is strongly recommended that students have their own laptops and software to be able to work at home. What else do I need to know? Our Music Department is comprised of highly skilled and trained lecturers and technicians with extensive commercial and academic experience. Members of the team have engineered for Realworld studios, Air studios, Radio One John Peel Sessions, worked with Massive Attack and Roni Size and worked for EMagic, Steinberg, Digidesign and co-managed Nirvana and the Darkness.
