5 Shipwreck Maria Amélia Year: 1905 On the 3 rd of March 1905 the "Diary of the Azores" announced: "Yesterday, by 1 pm, sank in" downtown Tufo ", between Vila Franca and Ribeira Quente, the boat Maria Amelia. The accident happen because the helm broked due to the violent current of the water when they were turning the boat, what causes that the boat end on the top of a down. The crew and the passengers were all safe by the own lifeguard of the steam and taken to Ribeira Quente. Both the captain, engineer and the rest of the crew, employed all the efforts to avoid the disaster, but the tide already down makes it difficult the maneuvers and in half an hour the steam was completely submerged. Both the shipboard personnel, as the habitants of Ribeira Quente, was very consternated because of the disaster of Maria Amelia that was doing a good job to that village, providing easy transport of people and cargo. The wrecks are located in a down at 7 meters depth. It can be observed part of the propeller, the crankshaft and one of the boilers, in addition to various metal fragments. Shipwreck Luso Year: 1883 On the 27 th of July 1883 the newspaper Novo Diário dos Açores related: At around 11 p.m. of the 26 th of the current month, shipwrecked in the harbor of Carneiros, in the village of Lagoa, the Portuguese boat Luso, that came from Lisbon with stop in Madeira and Santa Maria, with cargo and passengers. Fortunately there were no victims. What was the cause of the accident? Well, there are different versions about it. One of them is that the loss of the ship was because it was not possible to the Officials that were in charge of the maneuver find the lighthouse of the harbor due to the fog. They just found land when the ship was already crashed. The ship was belong to the Company Insulana de Navegação (extint on the 4 th of February 1974), had capacity to take 134 passangers, 60 of them in First Class, 24 in Second Class and 50 on 3 rd. Moraes tell us that had a tonnage of 999 tons, with 72 meters of length, 8,89 meters of outfall and 4,5 meters of seagauge.

6 Shipwreck DORI Year: 1964 Edwin L. Drake began its service in 1943, by War Shipping Administration (International Freighting Corp) in the United States of America. It was a Liberty-ship and participated in Operation Overland and the Invasion of Normandy on June 6 th 1944 (D Day). In 1947 was transferred to the American Trans-Ocean Navigation Corp, and successively changed owner, flag and name. In 1962 it was owned by Atalaya Cia Nav, SA, and named DORI. In the 16 th day of January 1964, it had a sprang leak and beached near Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island Azores. Later sank in São Roque near Pópulo Beach at 18 meters at depth. Fortunately there were no victims. It took more than 24h to sank. Today is the most important shipwreck in the 9 islands of the Azores and every year is visited by hundreds of divers. It is now an Archeological Park. Cemetery of Anchors Centuries: XVI to XIX By indication on the Chart of the Island of St. Michael from W. Harding Read, a reference to an anchorage in an sand area on the east part of the islet of Vila Franca do Campo. The anchorage that is identified in other charts it s localized a little bit more east amd close to an rock area, named Down of Anchors were these anchors got prey. These anchors are in that spot not due to shipwrecks, but because these ships were dragged by bad weather until the Down of Anchors were these anchors got pray. In this cases the only solution was cut the moorings to the anchors, otherwise they will became a shipwreck. This is the reason why this name is now known as Cemetery of Anchors. The wreck are about -14 meters of depth and are separated in 2 parts. The first one where it dominates one of the propellers and part of the stern. The second one with the bow, 2 huge ship boilers and the exterior of the side of the ship.

7 Iron Cannons Centuries: XVII to XVIII Very close to the entrance of the small islet of Vila Franca do Campo, we can find 2 old iron cannons with 2,20 meters length and 12 centimeters orifice.
