Language maintenance and transmission: the case of Cajun French Dr Céline Doucet 1
Historical facts Louisiana: A French colony from 1682 to French speaking population: the French colonists the African slaves the Cajuns 2
Louisiana French Three French varieties coexist in a form of a continuum (Picone &Valdman, 2005). Louisiana French Colonial French Cajun French Creole French 3
Colonial French Cajun French Creole French Is traditionally said to have been the form of French spoken in the early days of settlement in the lower Mississippi River valley. Was once the language of the educated land-owning classes. Presented as the norm. Derived from Acadian French ( introduced with the arrival of Acadian immigrants in the 17th century after the Great Expulsion of the Acadians). Many Acadians settled in lower Louisiana, where they became known as Cajuns Their dialect was regarded as the typical language of the lower white classes. Developed as the language of the black community. Close to creoles from Haïti and West Indies. (Breton, 1979) Is called: black creole (Thibodeaux, 1977), parler «nègre» (Guidry, 1997), Neg French, gumbo, vini-couri, patois noir (Dubois, 1998) 4
Cajun French French language banished at school until the 60 s. Oral transmission of the language at home (traditional folksongs and life skills). 5
Cajun music Beausoleil & Mickael Doucet 6

Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (Codofil). Created in 1968 State agency French language and culture preservation and expansion in Louisiana Supported by French, Belgian and Quebec Governments French education program in public schools Continental French 8
How can Cajun French be passed on to children in order to maintain the language? Research framework: Methods of data collection: primary sources (classrooms observation in Elementary Schools, semistructured interviews, questionnaires) secondary sources (govt. publications, archives, census etc ) Personal experience in Louisiana and as a teacher of French as a foreign language Research-action model 9
A few issues Who is going to teach French at school? Which variety(s) of French? What is the position of French teachers regarding the Cajun dialect? How to introduce Cajun French in the classes?

I also think that French in Louisiana has evolved to describe and operate in a reality which is specific to Louisiana. It s not the reality of France, and it s not the reality of Quebec or the West Indies. It would be ideal if Louisianans could teach French in schools, but this is not possible. The next best thing is to give documents to foreign teachers and encourage them to introduce vocabulary items and especially to teach some vocabulary. (Richard Guidry, interview in May 2006, Lafayette) 13
Alphabet cadien, R. Guidry (2005) 14
