Course Materials Textbooks can be purchased from the Gateway bookstore at The Electric League of Arizona is in the Same Business as You Are The Electric League of Arizona, a statewide nonprofit trade association founded in 1960, is dedicated to serving the electrical and energy management industries in promoting the efficient use of electrical energy. Affiliated organizations include the Arizona Heat Pump Council, Arizona Electric Council, Arizona Lighting Council, Arizona Energy Management Council, Arizona Plumbing Council, Arizona Roofing Council, and the Arizona Evaporative Cooling Council. Per Prop. 300 new students will also need to prove In-State residency by providing a copy of their AZ Driver s License or ID. Failure to do so may result in being charged the Out-of State fee. This series prepares the student for ICBO/IAEI certification exams on one and two family dwellings plus the code portion of the C-11 contractor s license exam. Upon successful completion of the series you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and will be prepared to progress to the Commercial Wiring Series. 4 The ELA Institute for Facility Maintenance Education Sponsored by About the Program: This program has been designed by industry educators and practitioners, associated with the Electric League of Arizona s education department and the Arizona Heat Pump Council. This session will be taught by the League s lead electrical instructor and the lead instructor for the Arizona Heat Pump Council education program. Upon completion of this 16 week 2 nights a week program, successful students will receive a Certificate of Completion and Facility Maintenance Master Technician Patches. (A C average or better is required for successful completion.) HVAC Curriculum: The HVAC training will include a comprehensive review of HVAC theory and examine commercial systems, residential style equipment, water source heat pumps, and chillers with special emphasis on troubleshooting techniques. Understand the use of basic measuring instruments. This course also includes an overview of electronics in the modern world. TBD Theory of operation of semi-conductor devices, component and system construction, operation, installation, and service. Specific and practical application in relation to temperature, light, speed and pressure control. Includes amplifiers, power supplies, integrated circuits, fiberoptics, and safety. Interpreting code requirements for grounding and bonding. Code requirements for field installation also covered. Who Should Attend: Electrical apprentices, journeyman, contractors, inspectors, facility management or anyone seeking to upgrade their knowledge of the code. ELC AC / DC MACHINERY Dates:... Mondays, January 25 - May 17, 2010 Instructor:... Ray Palmer Principals and operation of AC and DC motors, generators, and alternators. Includes single-phase motors along with induction, synchronous, and wound-rotor types three-phase motors. DC motors including shunt-field, series field, woundrotor, permanent magnet, stepper and Brussels types. Who Should Attend: Anyone needing a working knowledge of AC/DC motors, generators, and alternators. This includes electricians, contractors, engineers, facility maintenance, equipment sales and service, supervisors, managers and planners. Steve Holmquist An in depth study of industrial electrical low, medium and high voltage power systems. Selection of electrical distribution components, single and three phase systems, online diagrams, motors, transformers, protective devices, power factor, demand factor, conductor selection, system planning, grounding and energy management. Who Should Attend: This class will help upgrade the skills of those journeyman and advanced apprentices who are competent commercial wireman. Prerequisites: ELC125 or permission of instructor. Elmer Tepper Fees:... $235 Members/$265 Non-Members Note: Course fees include a copy of the 2008 National Electric Codebook and lunch. ($50 off for those w/ Codebooks) About the Course: This full-day class will cover modifications in the NEC and discuss why the rule changes were made. Topics also include safety aspects of the NEC changes, conflicting rule changes, how to apply rule changes to realworld projects, and how the rule changes affect overhead costs. Steve Holmquist: Mr. Holmquist holds an L-11 commercial electrical contractor s license and is a registered maintenance supervisor for the City of Phoenix. He has managed building activities for a wide variety of production and building systems for Phoenix Newspapers, Inc. for over ten years. Mr. Holmquist has eighteen years experience in teaching electrical and electronic technology courses accredited with the community colleges. Richard Shaner: Mr. Shaner is President of Mech-Line Services, LLC, specializing in variable frequency drive automation and controls, including U.L. integration and factory service and training on 480V variable frequency drives of all designs. He has been instructing at Maricopa Community Colleges since 1996 and teaching factory level courses on troubleshooting, design and programming for a decade. Elmer Tepper: Mr. Tepper entered the electrical industry as an electrician and worked in this field for almost fifteen years. After receiving his BSEE degree, he worked in electrical engineering design and project management for a variety of industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities. After receiving his MS degree, he provided specialized consulting for many high tech projects. His most recent work had been developing and conducting training seminars and quality assurance programs. David Williams: Mr. Williams has been in the HVACR industry in Arizona for over thirty years. David s background includes both residential and commercial service. Mr. Williams has been instructing HVAC classes for over 22 years, including over 10 years with the Arizona Heat Pump Council. James Egan: Mr. Egan has over twenty years experience in the electrical industry. During those twenty years he has taught for North America Technical College, he owned his own electrical contracting business until he merged with a solar electrical distributor to specialize in urban and rural design. Mr. Egan is currently employed with a local electrical contractor where he runs the service division and supervises new commercial projects and residential remodels. Note: Fees include a copy of NFPA 70E Quality Instructors Mean Quality Education William Twardy: Mr. Twardy has over thirty years experience in the electric industry with specific experience in: electric utility systems engineering, customer service and market research. Specific functions include management, design of electric power distribution systems for a variety of commercial and industrial facilities, and the design and instruction of courses related to electricity. Ray Palmer: Mr. Palmer has twenty two years experience as an electrician in the United States Air Force. While stationed at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls he held the position of instructor supervisor and taught courses in Advanced troubleshooting, Cathodic Protection, Underground Distribution systems, Motors and Motor controls. He has earned a Bachelors degree in Occupational Education and an Associate in Applied Science degree in Instructor Technology and Military Science. He also holds an Associate degree in Mechanical and Electrical Technology. He has since retired from Luke AFB where he was the military electrical supervisor of the Electrical Systems shop. Daniel Turley: Mr. Turley has over 25 years experience in the commercial and residential electrical industry and currently works as a maintenance electrician. He has over 10 years of supervisory experience, including over 6 years as a Licensed Arizona electrical contractor, and has overseen large electrical installations. He is a certified Level 1 Thermographer. One of his current projects is to perform Arc Flash Studies on various buildings in the valley and to apply NFPA 70E to promote electrical safety in the work place. His expertise is in Commercial, Residential and Industrial electrical work but he has general knowledge and understanding of plumbing, HVAC, and maintenance procedures. He has long been interested in vocational education, completing a Master of Education degree in Educational Media and Computers. He has written several computer-based training programs. He also has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from ASU. Jim Jackson: Mr. Jackson has over 30 thirty years in the electrical industry. He holds a master electrician s license. He spent 12 years working in an industrial factory as an electrical trouble shooter and facility electrician. He also worked in new construction as well as a service technician. Additionally he has electrical sales, superintendent and distribution experience. 5
