2 Dear Prospective Student, The Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood (BAEC) is a program in the College of Education that prepares students for careers in early childhood education. The program prepares students to work with young children from the ages of birth to age eight years. Unique features of the program include a foundation in content with coursework in child development and families. Candidates engage in field experiences throughout their coursework to directly apply teaching and learning principles. In addition, candidates engage in an internship in an early childhood setting. Admission to the program is a multi-stage process. The attached documents will help guide you through the process. The following information is included in this packet: Admission Requirements Recommended Course Sequence for the BAEC Advising Worksheet for the degree Information about testing and teacher certification in Alaska. 3 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Admission to the University of Alaska Anchorage: Early Childhood Major Applicants must complete the Admission to Baccalaureate Programs Requirements. Application and Admission requirements are available on the College of Education Admissions website. Admission to the Early Childhood Education program, College of Education: Early Childhood Major Admission to the Early Childhood Education program is a prerequisite for all upper division coursework in Early Childhood. In order to be admitted to the Department of Teaching and Learning, applicants must: 1. Complete the application to the Early Childhood Education program. Please call an advisor from the COE Student Services office at for an advising appointment. 2. Complete Tier 1: Basic College-Level Skills General Education Requirements (transfer credits may be used).. Complete a minimum of 9 lower division credits from the Early Childhood Major Requirements with a grade of C or higher. 4. Have a cumulative GPA of Successfully complete the Praxis I: CORE Pre-Professional Skills Test. 6. Submit an Interested Person Report and Background Check. Note: Admission to the Early Childhood Education program is competitive. Qualified applicants are accepted on a spaceavailable basis. Admission to the University as an Early Childhood major does not guarantee admission to the department. Admission to Early Childhood Internship 1. Meet all the requirements for and be admitted to the Early Childhood Education program. 2. Submit an application form for admission to internship. Contact the College of Education Student Services office for appropriate deadlines at Submit one letter of recommendation from someone who can speak to the applicant's potential as a future early childhood educator. 4. Demonstrate general content knowledge competency through successful completion of 70% (included EDFN A01) of required coursework with a.0 GPA and a passing score on Praxis II: Elementary Education: Content Knowledge (5018). 5. Submit a resume that provides evidence of working with children. 6. Interview upon request. 7. Initiate fingerprinting and criminal background check process. 8. Provide evidence of a current physical examination. This service is available free at the UAA Student Health Center. 9. Maintain student health insurance throughout internship. Candidates may purchase this insurance through UAA. Note: Qualified applicants are accepted on a space-available basis. Admission to the Department of Teaching and Learning does not guarantee admission to the internship. Additional Information: All Early Childhood courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher. Upon successful completion of the Early Childhood licensure program, a teacher candidate will obtain an Institutional Recommendation from the College of Education to the State of Alaska for teacher certification. Internship is a full time placement (not credit hours) in a public school setting. Interns are expected to be present in schools the same hours as school district teachers. Internship is only offered during Fall and Spring semesters hours of field experience or practica are required for most Early Childhood Major Requirements courses.

4 ACADEMIC PROGRESS Internship(s) must be completed successfully and all Early Childhood Major Requirements, the Alaska Studies requirement, MATH A211, and Foundation Requirements in Child Development and Social Relationships and Inclusive Environments must be completed with a grade of C or higher in order to obtain an institutional recommendation for teacher certification. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Candidates must complete the following requirements: General University Requirements General Education Requirements (GERs) These courses are included under Foundation Requirements for this degree, please see below. Background Check Requirements Foundation Requirements These courses are selected to provide future early childhood educators with the skills and background knowledge in the various subjects they will be expected to teach. The selection is based on national and state standards for content preparation. Some of the foundation courses may also be used to meet General Educational Requirements. Major Requirements Core courses; field experiences in early childhood programs may be required as part of the courses. Internship Requirements INSTITUTIONAL RECOMMENDATION PRE-K- TEACHER CERTIFICATION Candidates who complete an internship in the primary grades (Pre-K-rd grade) may apply for teacher certification, Pre-K-rd grade. Following are the requirements for an institutional recommendation: 1. Major Requirements completed with a grade of C or higher. 2. Alaska studies requirement, MATH A211, and Foundation Requirements in Child Development and Social Relationships and Inclusive Environments completed with a grade of C or higher. Cumulative GPA of Cumulative GPA of.0 in all Major Requirements. 5. Passing scores on the Praxis I (CORE) and Praxis II (5018) exams. 6. Internships satisfactorily completed. 7. Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education degree conferred. Criminal History Background Clearance The College of Education requires compliance with specific background clearance policies and procedures for candidates participating in all university-sponsored fieldwork and those enrolling in coursework offered at the Providence Early Learning Lab (PELL). In some cases, criminal history background clearance is required for admission to a department or program. In addition to self-disclosure of criminal history to the College of Education and its partners, a check of the Alaska and National Sex Offender Registries, a fingerprint-based check by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and a name-based check through the Alaska Public Safety Information Network may be required. Various agencies and centers may have additional requirements. Failure to comply with the College of Education background check requirements will result in denial of access to field placement settings or PELL. Failure to pass the criminal history background check will result in removal from the program. More information is available at
