1 Western Digital Backup Drive Installation Instructions The Western Digital My Book network attached storage (NAS) device is intended to provide a backup solution for your office. To make the device functional, you will need to run the installation program and the backup software on EACH computer in your office. The device consists of two terabyte (TB) drives one for backup and one that is mirrored. The mirrored drive is a backup of the backup. You will need to follow the instructions in this handout to install the device and backup software and then configure each computer to be backed up. Once installed and configured, the backup device will create a backup of the files and folders you specify. Then, it will constantly scan your files and folders for changes and backup edited versions automatically. 1. Remove all the components from the box. Contents include: - Western Digital (WD) My Book device - power adaptor - three- foot long Ethernet (network) cable - CD-ROM with installation software 2. Connect the cables to the hard drive. a) Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the back of the My Book device. b) Next, connect the other end of the Ethernet cable directly in the LAN port of the router or network switch in your office. (If you do not know what this is, please call the Office of Technology at ) c) Connect the power supply into the socket located on the back of the My Book device. d) Plug the power supply into a surge suppressor. The My Book device will power up automatically. e) Important: Let the My Book device power up completely (approximately three minutes) before configuring the device. DO NOT press the power button. f) When you see the bottom LED on the device front fully illuminated, you can proceed with the rest of the setup. Refer to the next page for a setup diagram. 1

2 3. Turn on your computer (if not on) and insert the CD labeled Western Digital Backup Drive Installation Software into the CD-ROM drive. 4. If you are prompted to Open folder to view files, select that option. Otherwise, browse to the CD-ROM drive and run the program named WD Discovery.exe. Note: To Browse, double click on the Computer/My Computer icon on the Desktop. Then, double click on the drive letter of the installation CD. Finally, double click on the installation file (WD Discovery.exe). 2

3 5. Click on MyBookWorld in the Network Drives Found column. (Refer to screen capture below.) 6. Then, click on Map Network Drive in the Things to Do column. 7. Next, click on [Yes] for the prompt Would you like to map the drive automatically? 3

4 8. You have now added the WD My Book device to your office network. This device will appear as two additional drives to each computer. By default, the Public (Y:) drive will be used for the backup. 9. Close the WD My Book device installation program by clicking on the red button with X in the top right corner of the WD Discovery window. To Confirm the Drive Additions Click on Start and then on Computer/My Computer. You should see two new drives listed -- Public Y: and Download Z:. When you ve confirmed the drive additions, close the window. Download (Z:) Public (Y:) 4

5 Installing the Backup Software Each person in the office will need to install the backup software on his/her computer to enable him/her to backup files to the WD My Book device. Run the Backup Software Installer by referring to the steps below. 1. Turn on your computer (if not on) and insert the CD labeled Western Digital Backup Drive Installation Software into the CD-ROM drive. 2. If you are prompted to Open folder to view files, select that option. Otherwise, browse to the CD-ROM drive and run the program named WD Anywhere Backup.exe. Note: To Browse, double click on the Computer/My Computer icon on the Desktop. Then, double click on the drive letter of the installation CD. Finally, double click on the installation file (WD Anywhere Backup.exe). 3. If you see a User Account Control Prompt (security message), click on [Yes]. 4. Then, select English as the language by clicking on [OK]. This screen may take a few minutes to appear on the screen 5. The next screen to appear is the WD Anywhere Backup Setup Wizard. At that screen click on [Next]. 5

6 6. Agree to the License Agreement by clicking on [I Agree]. 7. The installer will now install the WD Anywhere Backup program onto your computer. Click on [Finish] to complete the setup. 6

7 Customizing Your Backup Settings The configuration screen (WD Anywhere Backup Configuration) will automatically appear on your screen (may take up to five minutes). Note: You might see some error messages about backup software already running. These are expected and you can dismiss them. 1. When you see a screen with One-Click Backup for your WD drive, click on the Customize My Backup link near the bottom right of the screen. 2. Then, click on [Next] to start the configuration process. 7

8 3. As part of Step 1 click on Network Places. 4. Then, replace the text Your Name Here with the drive letter (Y), a colon (:), and your name. For example, Joe Smith s would be typed as: Y:\Joe Smith Note: It is very important to have the drive letter, colon, and backslash Y:\ -- in the text box before your name. If you see something like \\MyBookWorld as the Backup Folder, remove it and type the appropriate text. Make sure it is similar to the example below! 5. After you have typed in the proper string identifying the Backup Folder, click on [Next]. Note: Leave the other settings as the default values (shown below). 8

9 6. For Step 2, you will see the window titled Select Items to Back Up. Click on [My Own Backup Items] to allow you to customize what is backed up. 7. In the following window, click on Local Folders at the top of the window. Then, by checking the box next to the folder name, select the folders you want backed up. This should at least include your user folder (e.g., ADminBU) and your GroupWise archive folder (if you have one). Note: Expand folders by clicking on the plus sign (+). 9

10 For Windows XP, your user folder is located at C:\Documents and Settings\User Name. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 your user folder is located at C:\Users\User Name. The default GroupWise archive location is set to C:\...arc. The letters before arc are random, so if you see arc at the end of a folder name on drive C:\, that is probably your GroupWise archive. If there are other folders (e.g., C:\CKV for 4-HPlus, etc.) you use to store your information, make sure you select them as well. 8. Click on [Select] to continue to the next screen. The next window shows you a summary of your selected backup items. From here you can add or remove backup items by selecting Add Backup Items or Remove Selected Items, respectively. 9. Once you have verified that everything you want backed up is selected and listed under Items Selected for Backup, click on [Next] to continue. 10

11 10. For Step 3 you need to name your backup plan. Type your name into the text box. Click on [Next] to continue. The last window is a confirmation window noting you are done setting up your backup plan. 11. Uncheck the box next to Yes, send my configuration information and then click on [Done]. 11

12 Registering Your Backup Device For these next steps you must be connected to the Internet. The process will still work without the Internet connection, but you will have to go through additional steps. 1. For the registration screen leave the text boxes blank and uncheck any boxes that may be checked -- as shown below. 2. Click on [Continue] to move to the next step. If you are connected to the Internet, this window will disappear. If you ARE NOT connected to the Internet, you will get an error message about a registration server. Dismiss that error message, and your backup will start. HOWEVER, you will need to restart the computer after the backup is complete and when you ARE connected to the Internet so you can register the program. If you don t register the WD Anywhere Backup software, it will not work after 30 days! 12

13 3. After you have completed the previous steps, you will see the WD Anywhere Backup program running and backing up your files. This may take a couple of hours, depending on how much data you backup. If you wish, you can minimize this window and continue working on your computer. 4. When your backup is complete, WD Anywhere Backup will display that information and also when the last backup occurred.
