3 Introduction During the last decade, hot sheet metal forming technology, better known as press hardening or hot stamping, has certainly become all pervasive in automotive body-in-white design. Driven by a strong demand for further improvement of energy efficiency and passenger safety, today, hot stamping is undoubtedly a sustainable global technology. The expected surge in growth of this technology in part production, material supply, production equipment etc, has recently encouraged quite a few players to enter this highly specialized technological scene. Competition has risen inexorably and the ability to act globally has certainly become an existential challenge. However, it has become clearly understood during these years that press hardening is an inevitably knowledge-driven technology. Without a proper understanding of the governing thermo-mechanical mechanisms it is perhaps possible to move along to the low-end of technology but impossible to reach the high-end. Because of this, there are some very promising opportunities for SME-companies in reaching and/or maintaining their position at the highend of hot stamping technology and to share/benefit from the high level of added value. The acquisition of substantial knowledge, therefore, constitutes the main key to be successful in the aforementioned sense. 6 Module A Heat-Treatment and Hot Forming of Steel A1 Fundamental Principles of Heattreatment of Steel Aim A comprehensive understanding of the interaction between heat, microstructure and mechanical properties will be provided. Content The basic principles of heat-treatment of steel are presented in a combination of seminar and practical experience. These particularly concern the fundamental interactions of heat, microstructure and mechanical properties. Using their acquired knowledge and skills, participants will be able to set defined properties for selected steels suitable for heat-treatment processing including determining and verifying the thermal process parameters hereby provided by means of appropriate material testing methods. IIDuration: 4 hours seminar / 8 hours practical laboratory internship A2 Fundamental Principles of Hot Sheet Metal Formation of Steel A3 Integrated Process Control Strategies Aim The aim of this tutorial is to learn about the different process variations of the hot stamping process by focussing at the technological view of materials as well as the technological view of processes. Content A major challenge in the press-hardening process is the safe processing and efficient interconnection of heat treatment and forming. The different process variations of the hot-stamping process, both from a technological view of processes, as well as from a technological view of materials, will first be explained in detail in the seminar presentations. The individual properties of different material processing systems will also be fully taken into account. The molding possibilities of time and locality-variable temperature control strategies, with the aim of setting graded component properties, will be comprehensively covered. In addition, the influence of different material processing systems when in contact with selected tool steels and coatings on the tribological system design is considered. This knowledge will then be reinforced in laboratory work experience practice on the basis of extensive press-hardening trials. Questions will also be addressed on the selection of appropriate methods of thermal process control. Aim Knowledge on special features of the process of hot-stamping body panels will be provided. Content The basics of steel forming processes at high temperature are provided by means of seminar presentations and practical experience in a laboratory. The basic mechanisms of plastic molding will also be taken into account, in addition to considering the temperature dependence of formability and flow stress. Similarly, questions about high temperature tribology will be handled. By means of the foundation training provided, participants will be in a position to fully comprehend and consider the special features of the process of hot-stamping body panels, and handling these adequately under real processing conditions.
