1 OFFICE OF CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION FILM STUDY Grades 9-12 Credits: 2.5 ABSTRACT Film Study deals with various theoretical, historical, and critical approaches to films. Film Study is primarily concerned with exploring the narrative, artistic, cultural, economic, and political implications of the cinema. The goal of this course is for students to be able to speak about films intelligently and to be able to write critiques about movies in one of several contexts. BOE approved 9/10/0213

Suggested Learning Activities: (What specific activities will students do and what skills will students know as a result of the unit?) Intro to Film Study (2-3 weeks) Define Film Study and the three basic styles of films. Also to identify and define a working list of Film Genres. What are the major film styles and genres? How do we characterize film styles and genres? Students will brainstorm what it means to study film. Using the text, students will define Realism, Formalism and Classicism. Students will access prior knowledge to brainstorm elements and characteristics of films, citing specific examples to better understand how films are classified into genre. Students will form a cohesive concrete list of and definitions for the different film genres. (Western, Gangster, Film Noir, War Films, Horror, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Romantic Comedies, Screwball comedies) History of Film (2 weeks) Analyze the evolution of movies. How did movies evolve from still pictures to moving pictures? How have movies changed since the late 1800s? Students will read the text and take outlined notes on the history of film. Use the World Wide Web to search and gather information about the earliest movie makers and will write a biographical sketch of a major movie contributor. View the DVD Landmarks of Early Film illustrating the evolution of movies from the Moybridge photos to contemporary movies. Create a timeline of the technological advances and major achievements of film. Write a one page reaction connecting prior knowledge to what they have just learned. Angles and Point of View, Color/Lighting (3-5 weeks) Define various camera angles, movements, and shots. Analyze how directors create point of view and how they use color and lighting to create mood. Understand how a director frames a shot and his purpose for doing so Lighting styles and their effect The symbolism of light, dark, and colors How does form shape content in movies? What effect do the different camera angles, shots, and movements have on film and how they are viewed? What role do colors play in a movie s overall effect?
