This course prepares students to be cogent communicators in their project-based work, to gain an understanding of the technical skills associated with Videography - sound design, mixing, editing - to train on and use professional grade equipment and to enrich their analytical skills as they become more discerning and self-critical. Students focus on the fundamentals of visual communication as they view and discuss various types of media pieces from blockbuster films to Fox News reports to Youtube clips, performing comparative analysis on media projects from different cultures and times. The ultimate goal of the class is the optimal enrichment and empowerment of the student towards both their career and academic goals. Linked Learning and advanced Project-Based opportunities exist between this course and courses in ELA, Social Science and Science. The content of this course is aligned with the Arts, Media and Entertainment Standards and California high school academic core content area standards. 2 SAMPLE PERFORMANCE TASK Performance Task Preparing To Film Your Short / Scene In this assignment you will: 1. Form production crews to create your projects, assigning roles to each member of the class and making sure that they are clear about their responsibilities. 2. Learn the everyday protocols used by professionals, as well as germane terminology. 3. Develop universally transferable personal and interpersonal skills discipline, time management, teamwork, problem solving that can be applied to any field. 4. Create a schedule and a budget for your budget, creating all the requisite paperwork permits, releases etc. 5. Explore the elements needed to successfully develop their original idea into a narrative story with three-dimensional characters, unifying the style of the performances with the timbre of the storytelling. 6. Analyze and practice creating key aspects of the scene: lighting, camera composition, camera movement, sound effects and music, use of color, set and costume design, pace and rhythm, etc. 7. Study the work of different filmmakers to identify elements they might adopt to convey story, emotion, mood and suspense. 4 Performance Task Rubric or Scoring Guide STANDARD ADVANCED PROFICIENT BASIC BELOW BASIC AME Pathway Standard A8.1: Understand the component steps and skills required to design, edit, and produce a production for audio, video, electronic, or printed presentation. There is visual continuity and a compelling story. Rhythm & tempo vary to build tension. Music, SFX and dialogue are well mixed. Video is colorcorrected, and titles and transitions add to the effectiveness. The visual story builds in dramatic tension and the sound is well mixed.
