Ms. Christie is very very good at making the characters in her mysteries into three-dimensional people, but Renusenb was a bit too naive for my tastes. This was still a very enjoyable read. The audiobook was great as well. Narrated by Emilia Fox, who you probably know from Merlin (or maybe you don't... does anyone actually watch that show?). Anyway, not the book's fault I had expectations, and still think it's super neat that Christie set a mystery in Ancient Egypt. De hecho, he decidido leer toda la saga de Hercule Poirot y toda la de Miss Marple en orden cronológico. El primer libro de Poirot es "El misterioso caso de Styles", que leí hace muchos años, y el primero de Miss Marple es "Muerte en la vicaría", del que hablé en esta entrada y del que salí muy satisfecho. Ahora tocaría volver con Poirot y leer el segundo de su saga, "Asesinato en el campo de golf", pero como no conseguí hacerme con él decidí leer uno de sus libros autoconclusivos, "La venganza de Nofret"; "Diez negritos" es uno de mis libros favoritos fuera de las sagas de sus detectives más famosos y enfoqué la lectura de "La venganza de Nofret" con el mismo ánimo. Veamos que ocurrió. Renisenb vuelve al hogar paterno después de la muerte de su marido y debe volver a convivir

5 con su padre, sus hermanos y sus respectivas esposas. Todo transcurre con toda normalidad, hasta que el padre de Renisenb trae su nueva concubina, Nofret, al hogar familiar, hecho que desatará todo tipo de intrigas por el control del favor paterno. Pues bien, Agatha Christie erra en casi todo con esta novela. Para empezar, la tensión está muy mal administrada y la intriga y el enganche que son señas identitarias de sus obras brillan por su ausencia. El caso es simplísimo y no acaba de arrancar nunca; el esquema al que suele recurrir Agatha Christie en sus obras, en líneas generales, siempre se inicia con la presentación de personajes, donde los vemos interactuar entre sí y actuando de formas que no entendemos del todo bien. Luego muere alguien y se inicia la investigación propiamente dicha y, después de llegar a varios callejones sin salida, llega el desenlace donde el detective expone la solución del caso. Pues en "La venganza de Nofret" la presentación es demasiado extensa, el primer muerto llega muy tarde y los personajes no empiezan a investigar el caso hasta bien entrada la segunda mitad y no es hasta más adelante, casi dos tercios de novela recorridos, que los personajes más inteligentes de la familia no empiezan a lanzar sus hipótesis. Además, Christie intenta emular el esquema que tan bien le funcionó en "Diez negritos" y le sale mal. Sabes en todo momento quién será el siguiente, quién parece malvado y no lo es y quién parece bueno y no lo es; los asesinatos son muy rutinarios y es muy fácil intuir quién está detrás de todo. Christie ya ha usado muchas veces el mismo truco y aquí es más obvio que nunca que el asesino acabe siendo el que teóricamente es el buenazo del grupo. O que el desagradable, el que se toma las cosas a la ligera o el que dice cosas que podrían malinterpretarse fácilmente acaben dando con sus huesos en el cementerio. Pese a ello, una vez arrancan las pesquisas y Hori y Renisenb empiezan a atar cabos se vislumbran aquellos aspectos que hacen de Christie la reina del misterio, pero ya es demasiado tarde para enganchar al lector. Luego están los personajes. Todos son muy arquetípicos y encarnan personalidades de manual. No es ningún secreto que Christie ha elaborado una serie de personalidades que va repitiendo en muchas de sus novelas, matices y variaciones aparte. Pero la gracia es que la mayoría de los personajes que pueblan sus novelas son ambiguos o nunca son lo que parecen, y que siempre tienen maneras de actuar o suelen decir cosas que te descolocan y te hacen desconfiar. Y que muchas veces, sobre todo cuando uno ha leído mucho de la maestra del misterio, caigan en los tópicos que ella misma ha creado. Vamos, que a veces parecen cortados por el mismo patrón (aunque siempre hay margen para los matices, como ya he dicho). Pero en "La venganza de Nofret" no solo ocurre esto, con un Hori haciendo de Poirot, una Esa haciendo de Miss Marple y una Renisenb, por poner un ejemplo, haciendo de Hastings, sino que lleva al extremo los arquetipos. Renisenb hace de ingenua, incluso cuando ya ha muerto media familia, hasta unos límites que rayan la estupidez; cualquiera hubiese empezado a darse cuenta que el asesino podría ser cualquiera, por muy hermano o primo o cuñada que sean todos. Otro aspecto de "La venganza de Nofret" que no acaba de estar bien pulido es el papel que juega la recreación histórica en el relato. Aunque Christie se esfuerza en perfilar con todo lujo de detalles la Tebas del año 2000 a.c., no deja de ser la misma historia de misterio de siempre. La recreación de Egipto no aporta nada remarcable a la historia y da la sensación que bien podría haberse situado en la Alemania de la 2ª Guerra Mundial o durante las Guerras Robóticas del 3245 d.c. y el resultado hubiese sido el mismo. La ambientación, pues, se antoja

6 como un complemento innecesario. En definitiva, una de las peores novelas que he leído de Agatha Christie hasta la fecha. Es una copia barata de "Diez negritos", mal estructurada y con unos personajes muy típicos que apenas evolucionan. Los asesinatos y las pesquisas tardan tanto en llegar que casi te da igual qué ocurra luego y la resolución del misterio acaba siendo muy previsible. Aun así, se deja leer, pero no la recomiendo.
