RECORD DEPARTMENT OF Form A CRIMINOLOGY (Academic Department Name) Includes Assessment Reports for those Instructional Programs listed below: Title of Academic Degree Program Degree Level Criminology B.A. Criminology M.A. Criminology Ph.D. Bachelors Masters Doctoral Submitted By: M. Dwayne Smith, Chair (Departmental Chair or Faculty Assessment Representative)
Form B Criminology B.A. Bachelors Expanded Statement of Institutional Purpose Linkage: Institutional Mission Reference: As an institution dedicated to excellent teaching, the University s fundamental objective is to evoke in its students a lifelong commitment to learning that enables them to become thoughtful, active, productive and compassionate citizens. As a comprehensive research university, the University is dedicated to the discovery of new knowledge, insights, and forms of expression through significant innovative research and other creative activity and to the presentation organization, analysis and synthesis of existing knowledge. College/University Goal(s) Supported: The College of Arts & Sciences strives to instill in its students a history of human ideas, a sense of love for learning, and an understanding of the means which scholars have used in their search for beauty and order in the natural world. Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes: 1. Criminology undergraduate majors will demonstrate knowledge of the structure of the U.S. system of criminal justice. 2. Criminology undergraduate majors will demonstrate knowledge of theoretical explanations of crime/delinquency. 3. Criminology undergraduate majors will demonstrate knowledge of methods of research as conducted in the fields of criminology/criminal justice. 4. Employers will express satisfaction with the educational preparation and performance of Criminology majors who participate in internship positions.
Criminology B.A. Bachelors 1. Criminology undergraduate majors will demonstrate knowledge of the structure of the U.S. system of criminal justice. On a yearly basis, a sample of majors enrolled in CCJ 3024 (Survey of the Criminal Justice System), a course required of all Criminology majors, is administered a set of questions concerning the structure of the criminal justice system in the United States. A bank of questions developed by a faculty committee is available to faculty teaching the course. Questions are embedded in one or more examinations administered in the course. Our objective is for at least 70% of the sampled majors to correctly answer at least 70% of the questions. During the Fall 2002 and Spring 2003 semesters, two samples of majors enrolled in CCJ 3024 (Survey of the Criminal Justice System) were administered a set of questions concerning the structure of the criminal justice system in the United States. 73% and 88% of students enrolled in these courses correctly answered 70% or more of the items on this learning outcomes mechanism, a percentage above the departmental objective. The stated objective was met. We believe this is due, at least in part, to corrections made by the faculty responsible for this course since our last learning outcomes administration. These include a more systematic application of the learning outcomes assessment, the elimination of flawed items in the learning outcomes assessment mechanism, and assurances that the full course content was in included in all sections of the course.
Criminology B.A. Bachelors 2. Criminology undergraduate majors will demonstrate knowledge of theoretical explanations of crime/delinquency. On a yearly basis, a sample of majors enrolled in CCJ 3610 (Theories of Criminal Behavior), a course required of all Criminology majors, is administered a set of questions concerning theoretical explanations of crime/delinquency. A bank of questions developed by a faculty committee is available to faculty teaching the course. Questions are embedded in one or more examinations administered in the course. Our objective is for at least 70% of the sampled majors to correctly answer at least 70% of the questions. During the Spring 2003 semester, a sample of majors enrolled in CCJ 3610 (Theories of Criminal Behavior) was administered a set of questions concerning theoretical explanations of crime/delinquency. 8% of these majors correctly answered 70% or more of the items on this learning outcomes mechanism, a percentage well below the departmental objective of 70% correctly answering 70% or more of these items. Once again, the stated objective was not met. In fact, twice now the objective of 70% or more correctly answering 70% or more of these items has been badly missed (17% in AY and 8% in AY ). Instructors of this course will form an ad hoc Task Group to address this issue and make recommendations to the department. Recommendations will be instituted during Spring 2004; assessments next year will determine the effectiveness of the recommendations in improving student performance.
Criminology B.A. Bachelors 3. Criminology undergraduate majors will demonstrate knowledge of methods of research as conducted in the fields of criminology/criminal justice. On a yearly basis, a sample of majors enrolled in CCJ 3710 (Research Methods in Criminal Justice), a course required of all Criminology majors, is administered a set of questions concerning research methods utilized in the field of criminology/criminal justice. A bank of questions developed by a faculty committee is available to faculty teaching the course. Questions are embedded in one or more examinations administered in the course. Our objective is for at least 70% of the sampled majors to correctly answer at least 70% of the questions. During the Spring 2003 semester, two samples of majors enrolled in CCJ 3701 (Research Methods in Criminal Justice) were administered a set of questions concerning research methods utilized in the field of criminology/criminal justice. 75% and 72% of these majors correctly answered 70% or more of the items on this learning outcomes mechanism, a percentage above the departmental objective of 70% correctly answering 70% or more of these items.
Bachelors 4. Employers will express satisfaction with the educational preparation and performance of Criminology majors who participate in internship positions. At the end of each semester, employers who have utilized a Criminology major in an internship position are asked to rate the (1) educational preparation and (2) overall performance of each intern. Two questions asking for this information are included as part of a report that internship supervisors are requested to submit to the department. The possible responses are Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. For both items, our objective is for 70% of employers to rate our interns as either Very Good or Excellent. During Fall 2002, those employers who utilized Criminology majors in an internship position rated each intern according to his/her (1) educational preparation and (2) overall performance. 95% of the Fall 2002 and 94% of the Spring 2003 interns were rated by their employers as Very Good or Excellent with regard to their educational preparation. 100% and 97%, respectively, were rated as such with regard to their overall performance. Both ratings exceeded the department s objective. Once again the objectives were met; the reported levels of satisfaction by internship supervisors has held across subsequent administrations, and hence, subsequent cohorts of majors. While employers report a high level of satisfaction with the educational preparedness of our majors, we failed to meet our stated learning objective with regard to theoretical criminology; this may suggest the limited utility of criminological theory to the current practice of criminal justice.
Form B Criminology M.A. Masters Expanded Statement of Institutional Purpose Linkage: Institutional Mission Reference: As an institution dedicated to excellent teaching, the University s fundamental objective is to evoke in its students a lifelong commitment to learning that enables them to become thoughtful, active, productive and compassionate citizens. As a comprehensive research university, the University is dedicated to the discovery of new knowledge, insights, and forms of expression through significant innovative research and other creative activity and to the presentation organization, analysis and synthesis of existing knowledge. College/University Goal(s) Supported: The College of Arts & Sciences strives to instill in its students a history of human ideas, a sense of love for learning, and an understanding of the means which scholars have used in their search for beauty and order in the natural world Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes: 1. Criminology M.A. students will demonstrate an ability to engage in the quantitative analysis of data. 2. Criminology M.A. students will demonstrate knowledge of theories related to criminal behavior. 3. Criminology M.A. students will demonstrate a knowledge of research design and methodologies commonly used in criminology/criminal justice research.
Criminology M.A. Masters 1. Criminology M.A. students will demonstrate an ability to engage in the quantitative analysis of data. All students pursuing the M.A. degree are required to complete CCJ 6706 (Quantitative Analysis in Criminology I). A faculty committee has designated the essential material to be covered in the course. Our objective is for 70% of M.A. students enrolled in this course to correctly answer 70% of questions on examinations that pertain to the designated essential material. During the Fall 2002 semester, all graduate students pursuing the M.A. degree and enrolled in CCJ 6706 (Quantitative Analysis in Criminology I) were administered a set of questions concerning the quantitative data analytic techniques utilized by criminologists in their research. 80% of these graduate students correctly answered 70% or more of the items on this learning outcomes mechanism, a percentage exceeding the stated objective. Once again our objectives were met, but we will monitor subsequent cohorts to determine if the results hold.
Criminology M.A. Masters 2. Criminology M.A. students will demonstrate knowledge of theories related to criminal behavior. M.A. students are required to complete a Graduate Student Learning Outcomes Examination, an instrument consisting of an inventory of questions created by a faculty committee. Our objective is for 70% of M.A. students completing this examination to correctly answer 70% of questions on examinations that pertain to theories related to criminal behavior. During the Fall 2002 semester, a sample of M.A. students completed the theories portion of the Graduate Student Learning Outcomes Examination. 82% of these M.A. students correctly answered 70% or more of the items on this learning outcomes mechanism, a percentage exceeding the departmental objective of 70% correctly answering 70% or more of these items. Corrections made since the last administration of this learning outcomes assessment seem to have proven successful. Primarily, this meant moving the administration process from CCJ 6050, a year-long Pro-seminar course that is required for first-year M.A. students, to CCJ 6605 (Theoretical Approaches to Criminal Behavior). We will monitor subsequent cohorts to determine if the results hold.
Criminology M.A. Masters 3. Criminology M.A. students will demonstrate a knowledge of research design and methodologies used in criminology/criminal justice research. A faculty committee has determined essential material pertinent to knowledge of research design and methodologies used in criminology/criminal justice. Our objective is for 70% of M.A. students correctly answer 70% of questions research design and methodology questions in the Graduate Student Learning Outcomes instrument. During the Spring 2003 semester, 89% of M.A. students completing the research design and methodologies section of the Graduate Student Learning Outcomes Examination correctly answered 70% or more of the items on this learning outcomes mechanism, a percentage exceeding the departmental objective. Corrections made since the last administration of this learning outcomes assessment seem to have proven successful. Primarily, this meant moving the administration process from CCJ 6050, a year-long Pro-seminar course that is required for first-year M.A. students, to CCJ 6705 (Research Methods in Criminology). We will monitor subsequent cohorts to determine if the results hold.
Form B Criminology Ph.D. Doctoral Expanded Statement of Institutional Purpose Linkage: Institutional Mission Reference: As an institution dedicated to excellent teaching, the University s fundamental objective is to evoke in its students a lifelong commitment to learning that enables them too become thoughtful, active, productive and compassionate citizens. Criminology Ph.D. students will demonstrate problem solving ability through the use of a variety of statistical, methodological, and theoretical approaches. 2. Criminology Ph.D. students will be able to successfully complete an advanced-level research project. 3. Criminology Ph.D. students will be able to secure employment in an educational, research, or administrative position appropriate to their training.
Criminology Ph.D. Doctoral 1. Criminology Ph.D. students will demonstrate problem solving ability through the use of a variety of statistical, methodological, and theoretical approaches. The general comprehensive examination required of Ph.D. students is intended to test students problem solving ability through the use of theory, research methods, and statistics. Our objective is that each year, 50% of students will pass the department s general comprehensive Ph.D. examination on their first attempt. During the academic year, seven Ph.D. students took the Department s general comprehensive Ph.D. examination. 71% of the students passed this examination on their first attempt; a percentage that exceeds the departmental objective on this outcomes assessment mechanism. Once again, this objective was met. Subsequent assessments will determine if this success continues to hold across different cohorts.
Criminology Ph.D. Doctoral 2. Criminology Ph.D. students will be able to successfully complete an advanced-level research project. Each year, Ph.D. students who graduate will file a vita with the Ph.D. program director that lists their credentials upon obtaining their degree. Of all Ph.D. students who graduate each year, 50% will be the author or co-author of at least one manuscript accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal. Although anticipating that our first Ph.D. students would graduate during , this proved not to be the case. Consequently, this assessment item was applicable to the past year, but we are even more confident that it will be relevant to the forthcoming year. Not applicable at this time.
Criminology Ph.D. Doctoral 3. Criminology Ph.D. students will be able to secure employment in an educational, research, or administrative position appropriate to their training. The job placement of each Ph.D. student is recorded by the Ph.D. program director. Our objective is that 100% of Ph.D. students will have secured employment within one year of their graduation in a position related to their academic training. As mentioned above, we did not graduate a Ph.D. student during , but anticipate doing so during Not applicable at this time.
