I hope that your stay with us whether it is to complete a degree or to spend one semester or a year on exchange is enjoyable and challenging, both on a personal and academic level. We in the Office of International Relations are especially eager to meet you and have you join our family. We have lots of exciting opportunities for you to get to know Korean culture and meet a diverse number of people. We hope you take advantage of what we provide. 4 INTRODUCTION ABOUT PUKYONG NATIONAL UNIVERSITY PUKYONG NATIONAL UNIVERSITY Pukyong National University (PKNU), one of the leading universities in Korea, was established on July 6, 1996 by the successful amalgamation of two national universities, Pusan National University of Fisheries and Pusan National University of Technology. Pukyong has 6 Colleges, 78 majors with 26,353 undergraduate and 2,823 graduate students enrolled. 5 OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS The Office of International Relations (OIR) is an important place for international students during their stay at PKNU. The office staff will help you in a variety of ways. Through the OIR, international students will find valuable assistance upon arriving on campus, while pursuing studies, and in preparing for returning home. The Office of International Relations is located on the 1 st floor in the Administration Building at Daeyeon campus. 6 PRE-DEPARTURE CHECKLIST You have a valid passport. You have faxed/ ed your airport/train reception details to the OIR. You have obtained health insurance or travel insurance. You have made the contact details of your country s Korean embassy. Pre-Arrival Package Office of International Relations 6
7 BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE VISA-Requirements for Entrance To participate in PKNU s Cultural Exchange Program C-3 special visa is required, simply present your passport and outbound ticket to the Immigration officer upon arrival and you will be granted a 90 day stay (C-3). Filling out Immigration Documents When you enter Korea, you must fill out two documents, an entry/departure card and a custom declaration form. You have to return the E/D card at the time of your departure, so you hold on to it during your stay. When you leave, you have to present the E/D card and an Airport Tax receipt when showing your passport. For further information, please go to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. AIRPORT PICK-UP On the day of your arrival, you can meet your PKNU buddy at Gimhae International Airport or Busan Train Station. Your buddy will bring a sign board with your name on it so you can easily find him/her but I get lost or have difficulties finding your buddy, please call the OIR(see page 4). From the airport/train station to the university, the easiest way is to take a taxi. It costs between 10,000KRW and 20,000KRW. You can exchange money at the airport or station. Unfortunately, the pick-up service is only available at your arrival. When you go back to your home country, you must arrange your own transportation. QUARANTINE All imported animals, plants and their products are subject to quarantine at airports and ports of Pre-Arrival Package Office of International Relations 7
8 arrival at the time of entry. Animal: Plant: CUSTOMS There are things you can bring into Korea and things you can't. For further information about the custom laws of Korea, please visit this website. WHAT TO BRING Here are a few things you should prepare before leaving your home country. Money You should carry at least 500,000 won to cover your living expenses for 3 weeks. Traveler s checks can be changed into won easily at most banks but personal checks are not acceptable. Credit Cards Most shops and hotels in Busan accept major credit cards such as American Express, Visa, Diner s Card and Master Card. However, please be aware that a credit card is sometimes not accepted in smaller restaurants. Medical Insurance The Office of International Relations does not offer any student health coverage. Students accepted for study at Pukyong MUST obtain travel and/or personal health insurance before coming to Korea. You are advised to check your insurance policies carefully for coverage in foreign countries and especially in Korea. Later you may apply for some form of reimbursement from your home insurance company. Please keep in mind that you are required to pay full medical fees while in Korea. 9 Personal Items You should also plan to bring with you or buy in Busan the items listed below since they are not provided by university housing. If you prefer, you can buy these items after you arrive in Busan. You will need the following: l Pillow and pillow case l Blanket l Bath towels International Driving License If you wish to drive in Korea, you should get a valid International Driving License before leaving your home country. Please keep in mind that driving in Korea may not be as easy as where you are from! You may feel scared at times since Busan s roads can be quite chaotic. Clothing On campus, Korean students usually dress informally. Jeans or slacks with t-shirts or blouses, sneakers or running shoes are almost standard dress. Shorts are often worn during summer months. Students from tropical countries find winter in Korea quite cold and may find it necessary to invest in winter clothing, a heater or warm blankets once you arrive. Essential to Bring You should bring enough personal care items and medication to last the duration of your stay. It may cost you a lot more in Korea than in your country. As for medication, you may need a prescription from your doctor. Optional Items Apart from items mentioned above, we would like to advise you to consider bringing the following items: l Alarm clock l Portable computer l Camera l Any sports equipment l A spare pair of glasses and contact lenses Pre-Arrival Package Office of International Relations 9
10 AFTER YOUR ARRIVAL On-arrival Reception On the day of your arrival to Busan, you will be met at the airport or train station by one of the OIR staff and/or your Buddy. They will be holding up a Pukyong sign. The sign will have your name on it. If you can not find anyone holding a Pukyong sign, please call on of the following phone numbers for assistance. l Program Coordinator, Junho Han: l Program Teaching Assistant: TBA l Office of International Relations: ~7(from another city) ~7(in Busan) You will need to pay for your transportation form the airport or train station which will cost between 6,000 ~ 20,000 won. Pre-arrival & late departure students If you plan to arrive in Busan prior to the recommended program start date (dormitory opening date) and to stay longer after completing the program, you are required to arrange your own accommodation. l Dormitory opening date : Sunday, Jan 2, 2011 l Dormitory closing date : Saturday, Jan 22, 2011 l Busan Youth Hostel : l Toyoko-inn : l Blue backpackers : Pre-Arrival Package Office of International Relations 10
11 Orientation Program It is important that you attend the orientation for the program. The program, run by the Office of International Relations, will include the followings: l Welcoming Address l A Chance to meet with your Program Director and Lecturers l An Introduction to Pukyong National University l Program Information l A Chance to meet other students and make friends l Group Photo & Welcome Reception Attendance at the orientation is compulsory. Detailed information of orientation such as place and time will be given to you soon. If you are unable to arrive by the orientation day, it is advised that you contact the Office of International Relations. LIFE AT PUKYONG Living on Campus A New dormitory Sejong-Gwan at Daeyeon campus of the University provides you with an opportunity to live in a comfortable, secure and well managed environment at a reasonable price. It has a central heating system and provides self-serviced restaurants, shower rooms, study areas, a launderette, a table tennis room, a computer room, and lounge areas. Each room is fully furnished, but you have to bring your own linens, towel, slippers, and other things that you may need. There are no individual telephones in the dormitory. However, you can make local calls, long-distance calls and international calls by using pay phones. You can also use pay phones with calling cards that you can buy at convenience stores around campus. Neither smoking nor drinking is allowed in the dormitory. Your own cooking facilities are not permitted. The cost of the dormitory is included in the scholarship during your stay from July 5 to 25. Pre-Arrival Package Office of International Relations 11
12 Postal Service There is a Post Office on the first floor of the first Student Union. Mail and packages sent to you at PKNU should be addressed as follows: Name Room number, Dormitory (Daeyeon Campus) Pukyong National University Daeyeon-dong Nam-gu Busan, , Korea Electricity Standard Korean electricity is 220 volts and 60 cycles AC. Check the appliances you want to bring from your home beforehand. Dining Services Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served during the weekdays at the dormitory cafeteria. If you want to try different types of Korean food, you can try the nearest restaurants around the University. On- and off-campus restaurants offer a variety of meals, costing about US$ 3 ~ 5. Alcohol and Smoking The laws of the Republic of South Korea concerning the sale and consumption of alcohol may seem very liberal or very constraining to you, depending on your nationality. In Korea, it is illegal to purchase alcoholic drinks, including beer and wine, until you reach the age of 19. Pre-Arrival Package Office of International Relations 12
13 All public buildings are designated No Smoking area ( 금연, in Korean). Other buildings may have particular spaces designated for smokers. Restaurants have smoking and non-smoking sections. No alcohol and no tobacco are allowed in the dormitory. FACILITIES Student Union Each campus has a Student Union building and each of them has a main restaurant, a snack corner, a bank, a bookstore and post office. There are also facilities for photocopying/printing and hair cuts. In addition, there are shops selling stationery, souvenirs, and electronic appliances. During the summer and winter intercession terms, these shops are open Mon-Fri, 09:00 to 17:00. Saturdays they are open from 09:00 to 13:00, Sundays and holidays they are closed. Health Clinic Center The Health Clinic Center provides basic but important health services. The staff at the Center is dedicated to providing quality medical services including free checkup (Hepatitis B and 22 other kinds) each semester, first aid, health consultation, medication and treatments in case of sickness and injury. Dental treatment is available on Tuesday and Thursday at a low price. If you would like to use the services, you need to book in advance. 14 Student Service Center The Center issues several kinds of certificates for graduation, enrollment, transcripts, student identification, etc. In addition, you can get those certificates from an automatic machine. Please be aware that the machine is not available after 22:00. The Center opens Monday through Friday from 09:00 to 18:00. Website Libraries There are four main libraries (the Central Library, the Engineering Library, the Architecture Library and the Study Library) on the Daeyeon and Yongdang campuses and each of them are separately managed. They aim to provide a user-centered service to all faculty and students for their academic research and learning activities. In order to support these aims, the libraries are well-stocked with substantial collections of books and journals as well as periodicals and CD-ROMs. You will be able to make full use of the libraries, from checking availability of materials on the library computer system, to using photocopying, reservation and inter-library loan services. Computer Center The Computer Center provides computer related facilities for all students on each campus. These facilities include a number of computer rooms for computer-based classes. As well as general computer related facilities, such as word-processing and , there are a wide range of special hardware and software available. Open access to computers at each campus is available 24 hours a day. Cafeteria Pukyong s catering service offers a range of choices for students throughout the year. Refreshments, snacks, full meals and soft drinks are available in pleasant surroundings in each campus. Pre-Arrival Package Office of International Relations 14

There is no service on Sundays and National Holidays. In addition, village buses (마 을버스, Mae-Eul Bus), a municipal service, also run between Yongdang and downtown (Seomyeon)(Fare: KRW 850).
