1 Pukyong Cultural Exchange Program Office of International Relations Pukyong National University Program Overview Pukyong National University (PKNU) is pleased to offer a three-week intensive cultural exchange program to international students. This program is specially designed for international from universities around the world. PKNU students also take part in order to make the program more fruitful through mutual interaction in the form of diverse activities. There will be approximately 40 international students and the same number of PKNU students in this program. 10 hours of Korean language classes and hours of special lectures will be offered to provide international students with a better understanding of Korea. Furthermore, students will enjoy uniquely Korean traditional and/or modernized cultural experiences through many kinds of outdoor activities, home-stays and field trips. At the same time, PKNU students can also benefit by improving and developing their English skills while spending time together with their partner students. All participants will have the opportunity to understand their cultures by discussing and sharing ideas with each other. In order to support their activities with no loss of precious time, on-campus accommodation will be arranged to promote wider exchanges among participants. Aim This program aims to encourage students to extend diverse cultural understanding as well as develop language skills. Participants can broaden their knowledge by exploring Korean culture by way of life experience, lectures, visits, and activities with partner students. By doing so, all students can familiarize themselves with Korean culture in the end. Objectives On completion of this program students should be able to explain significant cultural differences between their home country and Korea explain cultural, political, and economical aspects of Korea. 2 Class Hours (from Mon. to Fri.) Morning Classes 09:30-12:20 (3 hours) Lunch 12:30-14:00 (1.5 hour) Afternoon Classes 14:00-16:00 (2 hours) * Subject to change without notice. Main Contents of the Program Orientation, Introduction to Korea, Understanding Korean Culture, Understanding the Korean Economy, Understanding Korean Society, Let s Learn Korean, Group Project, Group Discussion, Indoor and Outdoor activities. Detailed Class Information Let s Learn Korean In total, ten (10) hours of classes will be offered for learning the Korean alphabet and making sentences. This class is only for international students and is put into action in the morning session. Special Lecture Several kinds of special lecture will be given to students by distinguished professors: Introduction to Korea, Understanding Korean Culture, Understanding the Korean Economy and Understanding Korean Society etc. Group Project All participants should attend at least one of a few group presentations during the program. For this purpose, teams will be organized into groups with equal numbers of international and Pukyong students. No limit will be put on the subjects and each team will have 50 minutes of presentation. Students can have group meetings several times in the first week of the program to discuss and prepare their own presentations. We strongly recommend students have an on-line meeting prior to their face to face meeting in the program. Group Discussion There is at least one group discussion class in the afternoon every week. The main subject will be delivered to you by one week before the class so you will have time to think about it and prepare any questions.

3 Indoor and Outdoor Activities For better understanding of traditional Korean culture several indoor and outdoor activities will be offered. For example, Taekwondo, a samulnori performance, visiting historical cities will be offered. The details of the program are subject to change without notice. Homestay The homestay program is newly offered to international participants. Either your PKNU buddy(a PKNU student) or PKNU staff will prepare your homestay in Korea. Staying with a Korean family is one of the best ways to experience and understand Korean culture as well as build a close relationship with your homestay family. It is not a compulsory course, so if you want to opt for the homestay, please let us know by and we can arrange your homestay. Homestay Date: 2 nd weekend of the program Awards Supportive and enthusiastic participants will be rewarded for their efforts. Best Friend : One overseas student and one PKNU student Overall Winter : One student among all participants Textbook Offered by the Office of International Relations Accommodation All participants stay at the Pukyong dormitory for 3 weeks. The dorm is strictly separated by gender and two students share one room. It is fully furnished but you have to bring your own linens(one sheet is provided, you have to supply a pillow and blanket yourself), towel, slippers and other things you may need. Breakfast is available at your dormitory but lunch and dinner are offered at the restaurant in the student union building. Pick-up International participants will be welcomed by your PKNU buddy or the Office of International Relations staff at Gimhae International Airport and/or the Busan train station. From the arrival point, they will guide you to the school. Most

4 students use a taxi with fare varying from KRW 10,000 (approximately USD8) to KRW 20,000 (approximately USD16). Note that the pick-up service is only available on your arrival. When you return home, you can arrange transportation yourself. Optional Activities If participants can afford to travel and are interested in the exploration of Korea and East Aisa, there are lots of chances to look around. Recommended tours are listed below but they are not organized by the Office of International Relations. Students, however, can get information easily from the on-campus travel agency.
