Chapter 1 Introduction to AppManager for NetBackup UNIX AppManager for NetBackup UNIX is a robust and dependable tool to monitor and promote the efficiency of NetBackup servers. Using a set of NetBackup UNIX-specific Knowledge Scripts, AppManager for NetBackup UNIX monitors: The number of successful, incomplete, and failed backup jobs. The memory and CPU resources consumed by NetBackup UNIX servers. The number of clients managed by the NetBackup UNIX servers. The status of NetBackup UNIX devices and services. The size of NetBackup UNIX directories. Changes made to storage units configured on the NetBackup UNIX servers. By monitoring the status of backup jobs, AppManager for NetBackup UNIX helps you maintain an accurate, up-to-date picture of how well archiving protects your information. If the number of incomplete or failed backup jobs exceeds your expectations, or the number of successful jobs fails to meet a minimum threshold, AppManager for NetBackup UNIX alerts you. You can investigate your NetBackup UNIX implementation to see whether the necessary daemons are running or the appropriate classes are active. You can also know the status of network connections and of any backup devices in use. In addition to monitoring NetBackup UNIX, AppManager for NetBackup UNIX can intervene to restart a NetBackup UNIX service or reset a device. 1

AppManager for NetBackup UNIX also scans error logs for NetBackup UNIX entries, giving you better visibility of potential problems with backup activities. The Knowledge Scripts for AppManager for NetBackup UNIX raise events in the AppManager Operator Console or Control Center Console when problems arise. For example, if the number of failed jobs exceeds a threshold, or if a daemon is not running the Knowledge Scripts raise events. The Knowledge Scripts collect information that you can use for data analysis and reporting. AppManager for NetBackup UNIX provides a single location from which to manage your implementation of NetBackup UNIX. Using the Operator Console or Control Center Console, you can monitor the health and activity of your NetBackup UNIX servers, the efficacy with which the servers archive your information, and the status of NetBackup UNIX daemons and storage devices. In addition to monitoring, the Operator Console and Control Center Console provide the means to initiate responsive actions like restarting a stopped daemon, or paging the necessary personnel when problems arise. You can also use the tools available in the Operator Console and Control Center Console to generate and view reports based on NetBackup UNIX information. 2 AppManager for NetBackup UNIX

Installing the Module To install AppManager for NetBackup UNIX, you must install components on the following computers: Windows computers with AppManager components installed UNIX computers with NetBackup installed This section includes the following topics: Installing the Windows Components on page 5 Installing the UNIX Components on page 6 Installing the Windows Components AppManager for NetBackup UNIX includes a setup file that you can install in one of the following ways: Silently, from a command prompt. For more information about silent installation, see the Installation Guide for AppManager. Manually, on the local computer. You can launch the setup file directly. When you run the setup program, it automatically identifies and updates all relevant AppManager components on the computer. Therefore, you need to run the setup program only once on any computer. The pre-installation check runs automatically when you launch the setup program. To install AppManager for NetBackup UNIX on AppManager version 6.0.2: 1 Run AM602_NetBackupUNIX_Setup.exe on the repository computer to install Knowledge Scripts, reports, and object type information. For repositories running in a clustered environment, run the setup program on the node that currently owns the cluster resource. Chapter 2 Installing AppManager for NetBackup UNIX 5

2 Run AM602_NetBackupUNIX_Setup.exe on all Operator Console and Control Center Console computers. The MAINT.LOG lists all changes and problems encountered during the installation process. The MAINT.ERR log file lists only the problems encountered. By default, these files are located in the \NetIQ\Temp\NetIQ_Debug folder. To install AppManager for NetBackup UNIX on AppManager version 7.x.x: 1 Run AM70-NetBackupSvrUnix-7.1.xx.x.msi on all repository computers to install AppManager for NetBackup UNIX Knowledge Scripts. 17 Installing Non-Root Extensions When the UNIX agent runs as a user other than root, AppManager for NetBackup UNIX requires you to install the optional non-root extensions as part of the agent installation procedure. Without these extensions, most Knowledge Scripts in the NetBackupUNIX category including the Discovery Knowledge Script, fail to run. Non-root extensions use the sudo utility to allow programs to run as different users on UNIX operating systems. The NetBackup programs called by the NetBackupUNIX Knowledge Scripts require root privileges to execute properly. For non-root extensions to function correctly with AppManager for NetBackup UNIX, you need to perform some extra configuration. Update the sudo configuration file, /etc/sudoers, with the commands that AppManager for NetBackup UNIX executes. NetIQ Corporation recommends that you edit this file using the supplied editing program, visudo. For more information about the detailed procedure to install the non-root extensions, see the AppManager for UNIX Servers Management Guide. Note The visudo program must run as the root user. If you used the default installation path for the AIX operating system, the visudo program is located in /usr/netiq/unixagent/sbin. For the Sun Solaris operating system, the path varies slightly. About the Extensions To enable sudo functionality, use a command alias to specify the commands that a user can run. AppManager for NetBackup UNIX uses a form of command matching in which the command alias lists only the path and filename for each program to be executed. In addition to the command alias, you need a user specification. The user specification lists all the commands that are allowed for a particular user account. An example is provided below. Chapter 2 Installing AppManager for NetBackup UNIX 7

Example of an Edited Sudoers File The following example shows the updates required for a default installation of the AppManager UNIX agent to run with an installation of NetBackup UNIX that uses the default program file locations. The user in this example is netiq. Set this user to the same user account as the account under which the UNIX agent is running: # START_NETIQ_ADDITIONS_NETBACKUP # # This block contains code required by NetIQ AppManager for # NetBackup UNIX. # Cmnd_Alias NETIQ_CMDS_NETBACKUP = \ /bin/find, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpminlicense, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpplclients, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpclinfo, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bppllist, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bperror, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpstulist, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpclntcmd, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpps, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/initbpdbm, \ /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/initbprd, \ /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/ltid, \ /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmoprcmd, \ /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmps, \ /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmd netiq ALL = NOPASSWD: NETIQ_CMDS_NETBACKUP # # END_NETIQ_ADDITIONS_NETBACKUP Note The example provided above lists the default paths to the appropriate NetBackup program files. When you edit the sudoers file to allow access to these program files, make sure the paths are accurate. 8 AppManager for NetBackup UNIX
