1 Name The Mole Lab Chemistry I Acc (Weihin as a Means of Countin) Introduction Date One of the seven SI base units is the mole. The mole, also known as Avoadro s number, is equal to 6.02 x The mole is a quantity like a dozen (12) or a ross (144). If you wanted to know how many es were in 3 dozen es you would multiply 3 dozen es x 12 es/dozen. If you wanted to know how many firecrackers were in 3 ross firecrackers you would multiply 3 ross firecrackers x 144 firecrackers/ross. Likewise if you wanted to know how many atoms were in 3 moles of atoms you would multiply 3 moles of atoms x 6.02 x atoms/mole. The Atomic Mass Unit is defined as 1/12 of a Carbon-12 atom. It is the standard in the AMU scale. The mass of all atoms in AMUs is defined relative to this standard. Likewise, the mass of a mole is defined as the number in rams that is equal to the averae AMU of the element. For example the averae atomic mass of Carbon is AMU. The mass of one mole of Carbon is equal to rams. The mass of one mole of Lead is equal to rams. The mass of one mole of a molecule is equal to the mass of one mole of each of the atoms in the compound. For example the mass of one mole of Silicon dioxide is equal to rams for the Silicon plus rams for each of the oxyens (To make our lives easy we will round masses of all elements to the nearest 0.1 rams). Therefore, mass of one mole of SiO 2, is equal to 60.1 rams ( rams). The mass of one mole of substance (element or compound) is called the substance s molar mass in units of rams/mole. In part one of this lab you will convert between mass, moles and atoms of a iven element and identify a substance based on calculatin its molar mass. In part two you will use measurements of mass in order to convert between mass, moles, and molecules or atoms. For each of the nine elements (eiht known and one unknown) obtain a sample of an element in a container. Do not open the container. Mass the container with the sample inside. Record your data in the data table. 3. Record your observations on the physical properties of the element. Part Two: 1. Measure the mass of each of your empty weih boats. Record your data in the data table. 2. Add one level teaspoon of water to the weih boat. Measure the mass of one level teaspoon of H 2 O. Record this mass in the data table. 3. Add one level teaspoon of sodium chloride (NaCl) to the weih boat. Measure the mass of one level teaspoon of sodium chloride. Record this mass in the data table. 4. Add one level teaspoon of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) to the weih boat. Measure the mass of one level teaspoon of calcium carbonate. Record this mass in the data table.
