EducationalLeadershiptoprepareourstudentsforthechallengesofthe21stcentury throughinnovationineducationalprogramming,delivery,andexperience. AcademicExcellencetoprovidefacultyandstudentswiththeresourcesneededfor successasacommunityofknowledgecreatorswiththediversityandbreadthof experiencerequiredforexcellence. CampusDevelopmenttoprovidetheinfrastructureneededtosupportworldclass education,research,andthecommunitythatissocentraltobrown sculture. Thefollowingdocumenttranslatestheseinspiringgoalsintoconcreteactionstobetakenoverthenext tenyearssothatbrowncanfulfillitsmissionandconsolidateitsroleasaleaderinhighereducationand research.reflectingbrown scorevalues,theinvestmentscalledforarecenteredonpeople(faculty, students,community)andacademicprogramming(teachingandresearch).thesearecomplementedby investmentsinphysicalresourcesinspecifiedareasofneedoropportunity.eachsectionofthis academicplandescribesaspecificthemeorinitiativefrombuilding(on(distinctionfollowingastandard format:(1)articulatingourhighlevelgoals;(2)describingtheexistingassetsthatprovidethe foundationsforoureffortsinagivenarea;(3)outliningthenatureoftheinvestmentsrequiredto achieveourgoals;(4)describinghowinvestmentsinthisparticularareawillcomplement,support,and intersectwithassetsandinvestmentselsewhereoncampus;and(5)projectingtheimpactweexpectto haveasaresultoftheseinvestments. Whileeachsectionfocusesonaparticularpartoftheoverallplan,theyalso separatelyandtogether illustratewhatisdistinctiveaboutbrown:thedeeplyinterzconnectedandinterdisciplinarynatureof ouracademicenterprisethatismanifestedinourabilitytobringtogetherpeople,disciplines,and perspectivestocreatetrulyexceptionalteachingandresearchprograms.brown'sintegrativecharacter alsomeansthatinvestmentsinoneareanaturallyblendintoandsupportdevelopmentsinotherareas (eventhosethatmightatfirstappearunrelated).moreover,supportforintegrativethemesand 1
4 interdisciplinarycentersexplicitlyanddirectlystrengthenthetraditionalbuildingblocksofallgreat universities academicdepartments.forexample: InvestmentsintheintegrativethemeSustaining(Life(on(Earthsupportteachingand researchprogramsinthenewlyestablishedinstituteatbrownforenvironmentand Society(IBES)whileaugmentingdepartmentalexcellenceingeologicalsciences, ecologicalbiology,environmentalengineering,history(environmentalhistory), economics,andpoliticalscience.newprogrammingfocusedonenvironmentalchange andglobalaffairsalsolinksibeswiththewatsoninstitute. InvestmentsintheintegrativethemeExploring(Human(Experiencesupportthe HumanitiesInitiative,andattractsrenownedscholarsworkingattheintersectionof severalhumanitiesdepartments(philosophy,comparativeliterature,english,religious studies),whichbothstrengthensthesedepartmentsandcreatesneweducationaland researchprogramsacrossthehumanitiesandbetweenthehumanitiesandotherfields. OurDataSciencesInitiativeenrichesandextendsexpertiseinourtraditional quantitativeandcomputationalsciences(mathematics,appliedmathematics,computer science,andbiostatistics)andalsocreatesexcitingnewresearchopportunitiesand educationalprogramsforstudentsandfacultyinthephysical,social,andlifesciencesas wellasinthehumanities. Eachoftheseexamplesillustratesthecrosscuttingnatureofourproposedinvestmentsandhowthey willradiateacrossthecampus,strengthenouracademicdepartments,andgenerateexcitingand distinctiveopportunitiesforourstudentsandfaculty. PURPOSE+AND+CONTEXT+ Theseplansweredevelopedtoguidetheplanningandexecutionofacomprehensivefundraising campaignforbrown.inadditiontoguidingacademicdecisionzmaking,theyserveasthebasisfora TableofNeeds specificfundraisingprioritiesforthecomingyears thatwillbemadepublicupon thelaunchofthecampaigninoctober2015. ItisimportanttorecognizethattheseplansdonotencompassallthatisimportanttoBrownorallthat theuniversitywilldointhecomingyears.theyfocusnarrowlyoninitiativesthatwillbefundraising priorities,andgiftsareonlyoneofthewaysthatbrownsupportsitsoperations.otherrevenuesources includetuitionreceipts,researchgrants,andpayoutsfromthebrownendowment.theseotherrevenue sourcessupportawiderangeofuniversitypriorities rangingfromcampussafely,tothehealthand wellbeingofstudents,tosupportofstaffforcoreoperations,tothemaintenanceofinfrastructure,to thesupportofestablishededucationalandcampuslifeprograms andtheywillcontinuetodoso.the strengthinbrown sfinancialpositionthatwillresultfromacomprehensivecampaignwillsupportallof thesepriorities,whetherornottheyarementionedhere. Itisalsoimportanttonotethatthisisbothaworkingdocumentandalivingdocument.Itservesasa roadmapforthenextdecade onethatallowsustobeflexibleandresponsivetonewopportunities that,liketheonescontainedinourplan,holdexceptionalpromiseforbrown.eveninthepasttwo 2
5 years,ourplanshaveevolvedsincebuilding(on(distinctionwasapproved.forexample,anewinitiative indatascienceshasevolvedintoapriority.thisevolutionwillcontinue.accordingly,thecampaignplan willincludesignificantsupporttopromoteexcellenceandinnovationacrosstheuniversitythrough initiativesthathaveyettoemerge. Brownisatanimportantandcriticaljunctureinitslonganddistinguishedhistory,positionedto contributelocallyandgloballyinincreasinglysignificantwaysthroughdistinctiveteaching,research,and service.thisplantakesadvantageofbrown'scapacityandculture,andcallsuponourbroader communityofsupporterstohelpusbuilduponourmanyassetsbyinvestingincontinuedacademic leadershipandexcellence. 3

PRINCIPAL+UNITS+ Brownhasalonganddistinguishedhistoryofexcellenceinthearts;artisticactivityhasbeencentralto itsdistinctiveintellectualenvironmentandmission.brownrecognizesthattheartsconstitutesingular waysofknowingthathaveaspecialandimportantplaceintheuniversity.asdiscretefieldsofstudy, theartsaretraditionallyanchoredinacademicdepartmentsthatallowstudentsandfacultytodevelop highlevelsofdisciplinaryexpertise.however,atbrown,studentinterest,facultyscholarship,and creativevisionmaketheartsanintegralpresencethroughoutthecurriculumandacrossthecampus.in short,theartsarefundamentaltobrown semphasisoncreativecriticalinquiryintothemostimportant questionsfacinghumanityaroundtheworld.ourplanistobuildontheexceptionallystrongconnection oftheartsonthiscampustobrown sdistinctiveapproachtoliberaleducation. Thisbeginswithenhancingfurthertheintegrationoftheartsintothefullrangeofintellectualactivities oncampus.whereastheartsaresegregatedwithinaseparateschoolorrelegatedtotheperipheryat otherinstitutions,brownisadvantageouslypositionedtocombineprofessionalzqualitytraininginthe artswiththescholarlydepthandworldlycommitmentoftheliberalartscurriculum.theuniversity s strategicplan,building(on(distinction,reaffirmsourbeliefthattheartsarecentraltoaliberaleducation, andourgoalisforbrowntobecometheuniversityofchoiceforfacultyandstudentsseekingexcellence inscholarship,teaching,production,andperformanceacrossthearts.thefoundationsfortheartsat Brownarestrong: 1.AcademicDepartments.ThecreativeandperformingartsatBrownaregroundedinfivecore departments:literaryarts,music,moderncultureandmedia,theaterandperformancestudies,and VisualArts.AsfullyintegratedpartsofBrown soverallmissionforscholarshipandeducationinthe liberalarts,thesecoredepartmentsenjoystrongtiestootheracademicunitsinthehumanitiesaswell asinthesocial,physical,andnaturalsciences:notonlyarthistory,literature,andculture,butalso education,neuroscienceandpsychology,computerscience,andengineering. 2.MFAPrograms.Brownoffersthreeoutstandinggraduateprogramsinadvancedartspractice:Literary Arts,Playwriting,and(inpartnershipwithTrinityRep)ActingandDirecting.Allthreeprogramsare regardedasamongtheverybestintheirfieldsandareamongthemosthighlyselectiveprogramsat Brown. 3.CreativeArtsCouncil(CAC).Adozenyearsago,thefiveartsdepartmentsestablishedtheCAC,which alsoincludesrepresentationfromtheritesandreasontheatre(partoftheafricanastudies 5
8 department)andthedavidwintonbellgallery.throughitspublicactivities,thiscollectiveforumof campusartsleadersworkstoelevatethevisibilityoftheartsoncampusinthelocalcommunityand beyond.cacgrantprogramsfundfacultyandstudentprojects,shortztermartistresidencies,and developmentofnewartscourses. 4.GranoffCenterfortheCreativeArts.Openedin2011,thePerryandMartyGranoffCenterforthe CreativeArtsisoneofthemostinnovativefacilitiesfortheartsinallofhighereducation.Thespaceand facilitiesitprovideshaveenabledfacultyandstudentstolaunchnewexperimentsinartsresearch, teaching,andproductionacrosstheboundariesofindividualdisciplinesandamongartists,scientists, andscholars. 5.StudentCoZCurricularActivities.Brownstudentsarehighlycommittedtothearts.In2013Z14,there were76registeredstudentassociationsinthearts;5,121registeredstudentartsevents;16,551booking hoursfortheartsoncampus.sixtypercentofbrownundergraduateapplicantsdeclareaprincipalcoz curricularinterestinthearts. 6.Partnerships.ThespanofBrown sactivitiesintheartshasbeensignificantlyenlargedthrough collaborationsatmanylevelswithrhodeislandschoolofdesign(risd),aworldzclassschoolofdesign, andwithtrinityrep,anationallyrenownedrepertorytheaterwithwhich(asnotedabove)weoffer whathasrapidlybecomeoneofthetopmfaprogramsinactinganddirecting. INVESTMENTS+ BrownhasdevelopedambitiousgoalstofurtherelevatetheartsandfirmlyestablishtheUniversityasa nationalleaderinthecreationofartandtheeducationofartists.majorgoalsinclude: 1.CenterforthePerformingArts.Theconstructionofaninnovativenewcampushubformusic,dance, theaterandmultimediaarts,tobelocatedintheheartofcampus,willhighlightthecentralityofthearts atbrown.followingtwoyearsofintensiveandengagedacademicplanning,thecenterwillbeorganized aroundadedicatedspaceforperformancesuitableforthemanymediumzsizetolargeensemblesthat existatbrown.this80,000squarefootbuildingwillcontaintherangeofspacesnecessarytoensure thatthebuildingisactivedayandnight,everydayoftheweek.withadesignconceptthatwillmakeit uniqueinamericanhighereducation,thecenter sspaceswillbeacousticallyappropriate,flexible,and usableformultiplepurposesatthehighestlevelsofquality,andwillaccommodatemusic,dance,and theater.beyondacademicneedandhighstudentinterest,suchaspaceholdsappealforitscommunityz buildingpower,bothwithinthecampusandacrossthebrownandprovidencecommunities. 2.OtherArtsSpaces.Renovationsandenhancementstoexistingtheaterandartsspaces,includingthe PerryandMartyGranoffCenterfortheCreativeArts,andtheStuart,Leeds,andRitesandReason theaters,arealsoplanned. 3.LeadershipandFaculty.ToachieveBrown sgoalofbecomingtheuniversityofchoiceintheartsand tobuildonitsspecialcommitmenttocreativecriticalinquiry,weneedtorecruitasetoffacultyselected specificallytointegrateartisticpracticeandinquiryinwaysthatleverageouralreadyoutstanding 6
9 strengthsintheartsdepartmentsandtotakefulladvantageofthenewandrenovatedspacesfor artisticactivityoncampus.theviceprovostfortheartsandanewexecutivedirectorfortheartswill provide,respectively,academicandoperationalleadershiptofosterevengreaterartisticcollaboration andconnectiontotheliberalartsbroadlyoncampus,aswellascoordinationandsharingacrossthearts thatwillmagnifytheimpactoftheadditionalfacilitiesandresources.existingfacultystrengthwillbe extendedthroughnewtenurezlinepositions,newprofessorofthepracticelinesfordistinguishedartists, andexpandingprogramsforvisitingartistsandartistsinresidence. 4.NewandEnhancedAcademicPrograms.GrowingBrown scapacitiesasanartsuniversitywillinvolve newprogramming,includingasignificantexpansionofinstitutionalpartnershipactivities. GlobalArtsHubs.Weplantoestablishasmallgroupofcarefullyconceivedpartnerships withgroupsofacademicandartsinstitutionslocatedinsomeofthemostdynamicarts communitiesintheworld.underthismodel,brownfacultyandstudentswouldworkin thesesiteswithleadingscholarsandartists;inturn,thescholarsandartistswouldalso spendtimeatbrownonarecurrentvisitingbasis.theextent,duration,andintensityof collaborationsfosteredthroughthehubswillgofarbeyondconventionalfaculty exchangesandstudyabroadexperiences,andmayultimatelydevelopintodegree programs.plansareunderwayforafirstartshubinberlin. JointandDualDegrees.Morelocally,facultyandadministratorsfromBrownandRISD havebeenengagedinanongoingprocesstoexplorepromisingareasfornewjoint degreeprogramsthatwouldsignificantlycomplementexistingofferingsatboth institutions.otherpossiblecollaborationswithconservatoriesandartsinstitutionsin theregioncouldalsoleadtonewjointdegreeprograms. ColloquiumontheArtsandtheLiberalArts.Anongoingfacultyseminarwillserveasan ongoinglaboratoryforthedevelopmentofadistinctivesymbiosisbetweentheartsand theliberalartsreflectingtheadventurousnessandporosityofbrown sacademic culture. CoZCurricularActivities.Animportantsetofgoalsfortheartsistoworkcloselywiththe OfficeofCampusLife,theUCS,SCAC(StudentCreativeArtsCouncil),andStudent ActivitiesOffice,amongotherunits,toenhancethewaysthatBrownisabletosupport students cozcurricularartscommitmentsinwaysthatencourageandmaximizecrossz pollinationbetweenstudents cozcurricularinterestsintheartsandtheiracademicwork acrosstheliberalartscurriculum.thisincludesdevelopingnewcurricularpathways linkingthestudyoftheartswithfieldsatthefrontierofexcitingdevelopmentsinthe 21 st centuryinbiology,computationalsciences,environmentalandsustainability studies,robotics,andmanyotherareas. 4.MFAStudentSupport.WhileBrown smfaprogramsareamongitsmostdistinguishedgraduate programsandhighlightourexcellenceinthearts,thefinancialsupportweareabletoprovideisless generousthanthatofourcompetitorsandcancreatehardshipsforthesetalentedstudentscommitted toartscareers.enhancedfellowshipsformfastudentswouldbetterenablebrowntorecruitthemost 7
10 promisingstudentsregardlessoftheirfinancialcircumstances.thisismostpressingforthebrownz TrinityprograminActingandDirecting. 5.RelatedInvestments.Becauseoftherichpossibilitiesfortheartstoconnecttoanevengreater degreewithotherpartsofthecampus,thisthemestandstobenefitfrominvestmentsmadethroughout Building(on(Distinction.Themostdirectrelationships,however,arelikelytobewithinvestmentsinthe humanitiesandinengineering,particularlyastheyrelatetodesign. IMPACT+ TheseinvestmentswillmakeBrownatrulydistinctivenationalandinternationalleaderinthearts:a universitythatgivesstudentsoutstandingcreativeopportunitiestodevelopandexpandupontheir talentsatthehighestlevel,notalongsideorinsteadof,butaspartofobtainingaworldzclassliberalarts education.studentswillhaveworkandperformancespacesworthyoftheirabilities.inadditionto nurturingfutureartisticluminaries,thisinitiativewillenablethecoreartsdepartmentstoattract genuinelyinnovativetalentstothefacultyandasvisitors.byfosteringstrongconnectionsbetweenthe artsandotherfields,brownwillalsobecomeattractivetocreativescholarsacrosstheacademic landscapewhoareeagertoparticipateinthisdistinctiveapproachtotheartsattheuniversity. 11 Understanding+the+Human+Brain+ PLAN+STATEMENT+ Thestudyofthebrainanditsrelationshiptocognition,emotions,decisionmaking,behavior,and diseaseisoftendescribedasthe lastfrontier inbiomedicalscience.thisthemewillsupportbrown scholarsintheireffortstounderstandfunctionsofthebrainthatdistinguishusashumans,anddiscover treatmentsfordisordersthatdiminishourcapacities,andcreatetechnologiestoimprovelives. PRINCIPAL+UNITS+ 1.+BrownInstituteforBrainScience(BIBS).Foundedin1999astheBrainScienceProgram,BIBShas establishedadistinctiveidentityamongbrainsciencecentersbasedonitsmultidisciplinaryapproach thatbringstogetheracoreof45facultyinneuroscience,neuroengineering,computation,cognitive, linguisticandpsychologicalsciences,andclinicalneurosciencetoworkonresearchproblemsthatrange fromgenesandcellstoneuronalnetworkstobehavior.intotal,about130facultyfrom19departments havesomeaffiliationwithbibs,andthefutureofbrainsciencewillincludeevenbroaderengagement withthehumanitiesandsocialsciences.bibsprovidestheframeworkforintegratingexpertisein collaborativeteamsofscientiststotackleproblemsthatcannotbeapproachedfromasinglepathorby anindividualfacultymember.similarly,bibspromotesinterdisciplinarypostdoctoraltrainingand graduateeducationthattranscendsdepartmentallyfocusedprograms.oneinfourundergraduatestake IntroductiontoNeuroscience,andmanyofthesestudentsstayinbrainscience:170studentsinthe classof2015graduatedwithconcentrationsinneuroscience,cognitiveneuroscience,cognitivescience, andpsychology.studentsareintegralpartnersintheworldzclasssciencethathappensinbibs laboratories. BIBScorefacultyandpartnersacrossthecampusconductresearchattheforefrontofthefield: developingnovelmethodstomapnetworksofneuronsthatunderliespecificbehaviors,discoveringnew approachestounderstandinghowcomplexbrainfunctionsmatureduringdevelopment,innovatingnonz invasivetechniquestodampendownextremeneuronalactivitysuchasoccurduringseizures,and inventingdevicesthatturnthoughtsintosignalsthatcancontrolprosthetics.bibshasalreadyachieved nationalandinternationalrecognition,andbrown sbrainscienceresearchersandcliniciansaremaking discoveriesthatrelatetoautism,amyotrophiclateralsclerosis(als),epilepsy,neurodegeneration, addiction,depression,andschizophrenia.atthesametime,bibshasbeenattheforefrontofthe developmentandapplicationofdevicestoassistpeoplewithparalysis,parkinson sdisease,chronic pain,andobsessivecompulsivedisorder. 2.AcademicandClinicalPartners.BIBSdrawsstrengthfromandhelpsstrengthenanumberofother campusunits,includingthedivisionofbiologyandmedicine,theschoolofengineering,theschoolof PublicHealth,andourhospitalpartnersLifespan,CareNewEngland,andtheVeteransAdministration. 9
12 INVESTMENTS+ Overthenextdecade,BrownhasanopportunitytomakeBIBSatopZtenresearchprogramin multidisciplinarybrainscience.capitalizinguponitsaccomplishmentstodate,bibswillsharpenitsfocus ontwodefiningresearchthemesaroundwhichtherearealreadystrongresearchteams: Understandinghowthebrainandnervoussystemproducecomplexbehaviorsthat makeushuman,suchaslearning,memory,creativity,decisionzmaking,andemotion. Improvingthehumanconditionbyrestoringandrehabilitatinginjuredbrains,andby understandingandtreatingdisease. 1.FacultySupport.EstablishingBrownasaworldleaderinbrainsciencerequiresasignificant investmentinnewfaculty.newfacultypositionswillconsolidatebrown scurrentleadershipin fundamentalneuroscienceandneuroengineering,whilealsohelpingtoestablishbrownasaleaderin computationalandtranslationalneuroscience.inordertobuildandsustainbrown spositionasatopz tiercenterofbrainscienceresearchoverthelongterm,additionalfacultyinmolecularneuroscience, neuralsystems,computationalneuroscience,andneuroengineeringwillneedtoberecruited.in practice,someofthisgrowthmayoverlapwithgrowthplansinotherpartsofthecampus. BIBShasdevelopedahighlysuccessfulmodelofrecruitingscientistswhobuildbroadcollaborative networksacrossbrown.inthisway,facultygrowthinbibsisleveragedthroughsustainedandcloser partnershipsbetweenthebrainsciencecoreandtheschoolofengineering,thealpertmedicalschool, clinicalpartners,theschoolofpublichealth,andcomputationalsciencedepartments.moreover,there isgreatpotentialatbrowntoexplorenovelwaystointegratebrainsciencewiththehumanitiesand socialsciencesincludingvisualarts,philosophy,economics,andsociology allaimedatimproving educationaloutcomes,informrationaldecisionzmaking,andfacilitatehumaninteractionsacross culturesandlanguages. 2.ProgramSupport.EnhancingdiscretionaryresourcesfortheBIBSdirectorwillpermitstrategic investmentsinearlyzstage,innovativeresearch;sharedresearchinfrastructureandtechnicalstaffto supportleadingzedgeresearch;programmaticinitiatives;instrumentationupgrades;andnewfaculty startzupcosts. 3.Space.BIBS sgoalsandambitionscannotberealizedwithoutadditionalspacetoaccommodatethe neededgrowthinfacultyresearchersandtheirassociatedpostdoctoralfellowsandgraduatestudents.
