1 Page 1 FGCU s next Quality Enhancement Plan, FGCUScholars, will focus on the development of writing, critical thinking, and information literacy within all undergraduate programs. More specifically, our QEP will consider the development of these skills within the scholarly work that our students complete in their major that leads up to the senior capstone experience within the major. FGCU s concept of scholarship is based on an expanded definition of research derived from the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR); within CUR, undergraduate research is defined as An inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline. The definition of research that derives from the CUR has been expanded at FGCU using Boyer s ideas as proposed in Scholarship Reconsidered. In this work, scholarship is defined as A variety of creative work carried on in a variety of places... its integrity measured by the ability to think, communicate, and learn., which could include the scholarship of discovery, the scholarship of integration, the scholarship of application, and the scholarship of teaching. In order to better understand the current state of how and where these skills are taught within the undergraduate programs, we are surveying all undergraduate program leaders; this information will provide the Quality Enhancement Plan Committee the ability to develop a draft implementation plan for the QEP. 1.
