4 WELCOME Religious Education Congress

5 Please be assured of my support and encouragement as you so generously dedicate your time and your energy to this most vital Catechetical Ministry. WELCOME General Info Dear Congress Participant: I am delighted to take this opportunity to welcome you to Congress This annual event is always a wonderful opportunity for us to gather and renew our commitment to pass on the richness of our Catholic faith, our beliefs, our rituals and our spiritual traditions. The theme chosen, Lift your Gaze, See Anew, flows from the reading of the Fourth Sunday of Lent where we hear the story of sight restored to the one who struggled with blindness. Our theme nudges us to widen our horizons, and to bid farewell to whatever may cloud our vision or dim our spirits. Seeing anew, we open up to the wisdom of God sight to see beyond and to imagine a future filled with possibility. I am grateful that so many of you take time to be renewed and enriched by the excellent workshops, liturgical celebrations, resources and opportunities for community building offered throughout the weekend. Your leadership and participation are key to the ongoing development and well being of our local parish communities of faith. Asking God s blessing upon you, your families and your parish communities of faith, and with every best wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, His Eminence Cardinal Roger Mahony Archbishop of Los Angeles 3

6 WELCOME Dear Friends, I am delighted to welcome you to our wonderful annual Religious Education Congress, where we find refreshment, renewal and are re-energized to keep on sharing Good News. The selected theme for this year s event, Lift Your Gaze See Anew, reminds us of the gift of sight, of seeing, of gazing with eyes of the heart; we discover the wisdom and beauty hidden in the stuff of life and in the human story with the hopes, the struggles and its blessings. As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to pursue a master s degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2007 Congress Saturday night liturgies added $42,000 to this fund. We also thank those who made a special contribution to the endowment with their online registration. We are heartened by the quality and quantity of excellent workshops, keynotes and multicultural celebrations and entertainment offered throughout the weekend they are sure to renew our spirits and lift our hearts. In the midst of the activities offered, there are also moments provided for reflective prayer, opportunities to walk the labyrinth and time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Again, I am most grateful for your participation, leadership and willingness to keep on Lifting Your Gaze and Seeing Anew. I look forward to greeting you. Sincerely, Sr. Edith Prendergast, RSC Archdiocesan Director Office of Religious Education Religious Education Congress

17 JOHN O DONOHUE January 1, January 3, 2008 John O Donohue, Irish author, poet and a regular speaker at Congress, died suddenly January 3 at age 53 while vacationing in France. From 1999 to 2006, O Donohue was an annual presenter at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. He was scheduled to present two workshops at Congress this year. The author of Anam Cara, a best-seller published in England in 1997 and later in the United States, O Donohue also authored Eternal Echoes, Beauty, The Invisible Embrace and most recently Benedictus: A Book of Blessings in addition to two books of poetry. Reprinted below is a blessing he wrote especially for our 2006 Congress Opening Event. IN MEMORIAM Schedule A BLESSING FOR FREEDOM As a bird soars high In the free holding of the wind, Clear of certainty of ground, Opening the imagination of wings To trust the grace of emptiness And fulfill new voyagings, May your life awaken To the call of its freedom As the ocean absolves itself Of the expectation of land Through approaching only In the form of waves That fill and pleat and fall With such gradual elegance As to make of the limit An utterly creative threshold Whose music echoes out along Its give and strain of sea memory, May your heart know the freedom That can draw beauty from limitation. As the embrace of the earth Will welcome all we call death, Taking deep into itself The tight solitude of a seed, Allowing it all the time it needs To shed the grip of its former form And give way to a deeper generosity That will one day send it forth As a tree into Springtime, May all that holds you Of smallness and loss Fall from its hungry ledge Into the creative clay of your heart. ROBERT BARRON Arena 8:30 am The Religious Educator as Evangelizer: A True Mission in Changing Times The church s primary mission is to proclaim Jesus as Lord. This call is rooted in a tradition going back to St. Paul for whom proclaiming Jesus as Lord was an absolute stand against the powers and authorities of the world political, cultural, economic and military. When we look at Jesus we see him as gatherer of the lost, embodiment of the Kingdom, friend of sinners, victor over death. Those involved in the ministry of catechesis are challenged to see - and help others see the world through the lens of Jesus, and to model their lives on the pattern of Christ s own life.

38 ARENA CONGRESS 2008 PROCLAMATION David Haas F R I D A Y We rejoice as a people, a people who gather here from many places, from many points of view, who worship and celebrate our God in many different ways, with different songs, and different movements, but all united and centered upon this God who helps us lift our gaze, and to see anew, over and over again! We rejoice because God has claimed us and named us and loved us and continues to celebrate us all as a people who stumble in the darkness but continue to keep our gaze fresh and bright. We rejoice because we are not bound by our blindness; we are not limited by our finite horizons; we are not defined by those principalities and powers that cloud our vision, that diminish our spirit. We are claimed by God because our God believe it or not believes in us! Our God truly is an awesome God who shares the divine spark in each of us; Our God is worthy of our praise because we are graced with possibility, with hope, with the potential to be more than we are, to be the eyes, hands, ears, and heart of God! Our God has given us the Christ, the anointed one, the one who places mud and clay on our eyes and our hearts, so that the blockage may be set free; so that we may lift our gaze and see anew! We celebrate the gift of Jesus Christ, the gift of new life, of new sight, and new hope. With this flame, our hearts burn with the joy that comes in surrendering our lives to the one who calls each of us by name; the one who moves and stirs within us, and helps us to really see again. This Christ, this light, will be for us this weekend a sign and call for us to lift our gaze beyond the petty, beyond our differences, beyond our selfishness and egos, to see anew, to live anew, to sing anew! 36 OPENING RITE & WELCOME 2008 Religious Education Congress

48 ARENA F R I D A Y SONG OF THANKSGIVING In Christ Alone Don Koch and Shawn Craig In Christ alone will I glory, though I could pride myself in battles won; For I ve been blessed beyond measure, and by His strength alone I overcome. Oh, I could stop and count successes like diamonds in my hand, but those trophies could not equal to the grace by which I stand. REFRAIN: In Christ alone I place my trust and find my glory in the power of the cross. In ev ry victory let it be said of me: My strength, my source of hope is Christ alone. In Christ alone will I glory, for only by His grace I am redeemed. Only His tender mercy could reach beyond my weakness to my need. Now, I seek no greater honor then just to know Him more, and to count my gains as losses to the glory of my Lord. Copyright 1990, New Spring, a division of Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing (ASCAP). All rights reserved. Used with permission. CLOSING SONG May This Circle Be Unbroken Refrain Arr. by J. V. Marchionda, O.P. 1. We ve all suffered pain and sorrow, over folks that we have lost. But by trusting what our Lord won for us, we find strength to bear that cross. 2. There is sadness, oh, such grieving, when the ones we love depart. But we ll cherish all they mean to us, for they ll always live in our hearts. 3. There are some folks who die worried, feeling burdened by their sins. But, we ll know that Jesus saves them all, and that they will rise again. 4. Those who earthly lives have ended join the saints in heav n above. And, we living, who are joined with them, create one communion of love. 5. Now our loved ones live with angels in that holy heav nly throng. And, since we are still so bound to them, we can joyfully sing along. Text: Adlz Habershon. Music by Chas. H. Gabriel Copyright 2002, Arrangement by James V. Marchionda, O.P. All rights reserved. 76 ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS ORS The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious Education to support the ongoing training and formation of religious education leaders, particularly by making scholarships available for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers to pursue graduate studies. It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth Ministry will be given the opportunity to receive a master s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies. Any additional contribution through mail-in registrations and those who registered online could contribute to this Fund. As of January 25, 603 people responded with contributions totaling $8,850. We sincerely appreciate and acknowledge their contributions.
