A year after winning its first conference crown in 50 years, the Golden Bears have a lot of new faces on this year s squad with a freshman class that was ranked No. 17 by Rivals.com. Junior guard Jorge Gutierrez is the only returning starter from last year. Gutierrez will take over where Jerome Randle left off as the team s new point guard. A member of the Pac-10 All-Defensive team last year, he averaged 5.5 ppg and 3.0 rpg. The Bears will pride themselves on their defense this season, and Gutierrez is no stranger to that. In his first two seasons at Cal, Gutierrez has collected 55 career steals. He will get help on the veteran leadership side from senior center Markhuri Sanders-Frison and junior forward Harper Kamp, who is returning this season after sitting out all of last year recovering from knee surgery. As a sophomore in 08-09, Kamp contributed 3.8 ppg and 3.2 rpg, primarily as a reserve. Sanders-Frison is back after putting in a tremendous offseason workout regimen that saw him lose 10 pounds. He started 10 games, chipping in 3.3 ppg and 3.0 rpg last year after transferring from South Plains College. Cal has won 38 of its last 40 nonconference home games, including the last 19 in a row. In his first two years at the helm for the Bears, head coach Mike Montgomery has amassed a 31-3 record at Haas. The Bears went 15-1 at home a year ago, with the lone defeat coming in overtime against UCLA. Among the new faces for the Bears is freshman guard Allen Crabbe out of Price High School in Los Angeles. In last Wednesday s 30-point exhibition victory over Sonoma State, Crabbe paced the Bears with 22 points. The 2010 California Gatorade Player of the Year and Parade All-American shot 4-for-4 from three-point distance and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Fellow freshman guard, Gary Franklin chipped in 17 points, going 3-for-10 from behind the arc.
