The Redbirds are the Pacific Coast League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. This is the second game of an eight-game home stand. The Cubs will host the Nashville Sounds in a four-game seires starting on Monday. The Sounds are the PCL affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. OPENING DAY FEELS LIKE GROUNDHOUG DAY: For the second straight season, starter Chris Rusin allowed three runs in the first inning and the Cubs gave up 10 runs in a loss on Opening Day. Last year, the Cubs fell 10-3 at Albuquerque to start the season and lost 10-2 to the Redbirds in last night s opener. The Cubs lost 15-5 in their home opener last year on April 12, also against the Isotopes. The Cubs are now 7-10 on Opening Day since joining the PCL in 1998 and 8-9 in home openers. NO JOSHING AROUND: After being limited to just 33 games last season with four separate trips to the disabled list, LF Josh Vitters got right to work at the plate last night. Vitters lined a solo home run in the third inning and finished with two hits. In 2012, Vitters set a careerhigh and finished second on the I-Cubs with 17 home runs (Anthony Rizzo - 23). A FIRST AT FIRST: Chris Coghlan made his Cubs debut as Iowa s starting first baseman last night. Coghlan joined the organization as a minor league free agent this off-season after eight seasons in the Florida/Miami Marlins organization. Coming into the season, Coghlan had played 821 games (428 in the minors and 393 in the majors) but last night was his first game at first base. Coghlan came up playing a lot of second and third base before becoming primarily an outfielder in DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: 2B Arismendy Alcantara and 3B Christian Villanueva both connected on a double in their first at-bat last night. For each player, it was their first career triple-a at-bat. CF Matt Szczur and SS Javy Baez also made their triple-a debuts last night. Szczur was 0-for-5, but collected an RBI in the ninth inning. Baez drew a walk in his first plate appearance, but finished 0-for- 3 at the plate. MEMPHIS: The Redbirds lead this series 1-0. These two teams are scheduled to meet 16 times in the season series. The Redbirds return to Principal Park for a second series, July That series includes a double-header on the final day. The Cubs visit Auto Zone Park in Memphis for their first road series, April and again May Last year, the Redbirds won the season series 10-6, but the teams split the eight games at Principal Park. The Redbirds lead the all-time PCL series , but the Cubs hold a all-time advantage at Principal Park. IT S EASY BEING NEGRIN: RH Yoanner Negrin pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief last night. He allowed just one hit and struck out four. Negrin has been fast out of the game for the Cubs the last two seasons. He opened last season with 11.1 consecutive scoreless frames. YOUTH IS SERVED: The Cubs open the season with an active roster that features an average age of 26.2 years. At 21 years old, SS Javier Baez is the youngest player on the team and also the most highly acclaimed. Baseball America rates Baez as the Cubs top overall prospect and fifth on their Top 100 list. Baez is also ranked among the top seven prospects in the minor leagues by MLB.com, ESPN, FanGraphs, and Baseball Prospectus. 2B Arismendy Alcantara is also ranked among the Top 100 in those same publications and is seventh in the Cubs system according to BA. Other players making the Cubs Top 30 list include: Kyle Hendricks (11), Christian Villanueva (13), and Matt Szczur (26). CABRERA RETURNS TO I-CUBS: RH Alberto Cabrera joins the Iowa bullpen today. The Chicago Cubs designated Cabrera for assignment on March 30. He cleared waivers and has been outrighted to triple-a. Cabrera has spent time with Iowa in each of the last three seasons, posting a 6-9 record and a 6.38 ERA (91ER/128.1IP) in 47 games, including 17 starts. Cabrera was 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA (16ER/27.1IP) in 32 relief appearances with Chicago over the last two seasons. Cabrera began last season in the starting rotation at double-a Tennessee and was selected to start in the All-Star Game after going 9-3 with a 3.20 ERA (40ER/112.2IP) in 18 starts.
2 TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHER #37 Carlos Pimentel (0-0, 0.00) Height: 6-3 Weight: 178 Throws: Right Bats: Right Born: December 1, 1989 Opening Day Age: 24 Resides: Santiago, D.R. RH Carlos Pimentel makes his Iowa Cubs debut on the mound tonight. Pimentel spent the first seven years of his career in the Texas Rangers organization before signing with Chicago on a minor league deal on November 19. In five appearances in big league spring training, Pimentel didn t allow a run in 8.2 innings, gave up four hits, six walks, and struck out 11. WINTER WONDERLAND: Pimentel pitched in the Dominican Winter League and was 5-0 with a 1.67 ERA (7ER/37.2IP) in 11 games, including seven starts, helping Leones del Escogido reach the championship series. Pimentel led the league in wins and was named the circuit s Pitcher of the Year. POWER RANGER: Pimentel signed with the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on July 6, 2006 and made stops at each level of their minor league system over the last seven seasons, including six games with triple-a Round Rock to finish last year. Pimentel spent most of last season at double-a Frisco in the Texas League where he was 8-7 with a 4.09 ERA (53ER/116.2IP). He tied his career-high for wins and set a new career-high with 133 strikeouts combined between the two levels. Pimentel logged time at Frisco each of the last four seasons and was a TL All-Star for the Rough Riders in 2012, going 8-3 with a 2.55 ERA (25ER/88.1IP) in 35 games, including eight starts. It was the only season in his career when he made more relief appearances than starts. vs. REDBIRDS: Tonight will be Pimentel s first career appearance against Memphis.
