10 CCSC NATIONAL PARTNERS The Consortium is very happy to have the following as National Partners. If you have the opportunity please thank them for their support of computing in teaching institutions. As National Partners they are invited to participate in our regional conferences. Visit with their representatives there. Turings Craft National Science Foundation FOREWORD Welcome to the May 2014 issue of the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges. It is a real pleasure to bring another edition to you, the readership. I always feel that there is nothing more to say beyond what I ve said for each edition over a number of years as editor. However, I never cease to be amazed at the new directions and the new areas of concern that are in these new issues of the Journal. Our academic area is probably the most fast changing due to advances in technology. It s interesting that teaching graduate courses to non-traditional students (students that are professionals in the field) just in the last couple weeks topics have come up in class that are related to new technological advances for which I see sessions in the two conferences included in this issue that I really would like to attend. We need to remain current in a field that is constantly evolving. It does require attendance at conferences and reading the current literature in the field, and the current literature at this point is whatever has been published in the last few weeks! It s somewhat scarey as I think about it. As we look toward semi-retirement next year and moving back to the States one thing that I m excited about is the possibility of attending more CCSC conferences. They definitely will augment my classroom presentations. As this issue heads for the printer we need to recognize our support folks. First of all, there are the folks at the regional level that interface directly with me as we put the proceedings together. Dave Naugler and Baochuan Lee have really been a pleasure to work with, both in their second year of this task. They apparently took a lot of the procedures to heart and made it a somewhat seamless transition to their second year as regional editors. Both were most helpful and great to work with! We need to recognize the folks who actually print the Proceedings, the folks at Courier Printing. They have been great to work with. While our communication is primarily electronically, we have met the folks at Courier, and I do believe that the personal interaction does make a difference. We will enjoy being able to meet with them more often once we go into semi-retirement! It s interesting that when CCSC put out the RFP for printing the winning bidder ended up only about 20 miles away from where we re headed for our semi-retirement years. Sometimes it works out differently than we would expect, but in our best interests in the long run! We also need to recognize our CCSC support organizations. We are very appreciative of NSF and Turings Craft as sponsors. Their support of the Consortium has ix
11 made it possible for these conferences to take place and bring educators from institutions with minimal travel budgets to come together and take home ideas that get incorporated into the classroom, ultimately benefitting our students! That s what we re all here for. We also need tor express our thanks to Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the honor society for Computer Science. They make possible student activities at the various conferences and have been doing so now for a number of years. UPE s support of CCSC and our student sessions is very much appreciated. That is contributing to the future of out profession, My thanks to all the supporters and facilitators, and it s a pleasure to present two more sets of excellent conference publications. 12 Papers of the Twelfth Annual CCSC Mid-South Conference April 4-5, 2014 The LeMoyne-Owen College Memphis, Tennessee
13 WELCOME TO THE 2014 CCSC MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE On behalf of the conference committee, I welcome you to the Twelfth Annual Consortium for Computing Sciences (CCSC) Conference for the Mid-South region. We are pleased to be hosted this year by the LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee. The conference program includes ten papers, four tutorials, one panel, and two sessions of oral presentations of undergraduate student research. The program also contains a Nifty Assignments session and continues to host our annual undergraduate student programming competition. Sessions range across a broad spectrum of computing topics. The nineteen papers submitted were reviewed by the program committee, using a double-blind process, with at least three reviewers per paper. Ten papers were accepted for publication in the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges and for presentation in this year's conference. We thank all of the authors for their hard work and their high-quality submission and all the reviewers for their careful reviews. The Mid-South conference committee, the regional board, and the faculty and staff of LeMoyne-Owen College Division worked hard organizing this conference. I thank all of you for your varied contributions and the many hours of hard work that make this conference possible. We hope you enjoy the conference and find it to be a valuable opportunity for professional development.
