1 Factional-chage votex in a spino Bose-Einstein condensate axiv: v1 [cond-mat.quant-gas 7 Jan 16 Sandeep Gautam 1 and S. K. Adhikai 1 1 Instituto de Física Teóica, Univesidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP, São Paulo, São Paulo, Bazil (Dated: Januay 8, 16) We classify all possible factional chage votices of chage less than unity in spin-1 and spin- pola and cyclic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with zeo magnetization. Statics and dynamics of these votices in quasi-two-dimensional spino BECs ae studied employing accuate numeical solution and a Lagange vaiational appoximation. The esults fo density and collective-mode oscillation ae illustated using factional-chage BEC votex of 3 Na and 87 Rb atoms with ealistic inteaction and tapping potential paametes. PACS numbes: 3.75.Mn, 3.75.Hh, 3.75.Kk, Bc I. INTRODUCTION A scala Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) was fist ealized with alkali atoms of a single component of hypefine spin f [1. In that case the spin degees of feedom do not play any essential ole in the dynamics. Late it has been possible to ealize a spino BEC of atoms of diffeent spin components in an optical tap so that spin plays an essential ole in the dynamics. Fo example, a spino BEC can exhibit a spin-mixing dynamics, whee atoms of one spin component may spontaneously change to atoms of anothe spin component. Depending on atomic inteactions and the tap such a spin dynamics may spontaneously eliminate, fom the spino BEC, atoms of a cetain spin component by tansfoming them to atoms of a diffeent spin component. In some cases, this tansfomation can go back and foth, thus leading to a pemanent oscillation between atoms of diffeent spin components [. Expeimentally spino BECs have been ealized with atoms of 3 Na fo f = 1 [3, 87 Rb fo f = 1 [4 and f = [5, and 5 C fo f = 3 [6. In the mean-field theoy, the f + 1 component wave function of spin-f BEC is the solution of a set of f + 1 coupled Goss-Pitaevskii (GP) equations [7 1. In the absence of magnetic field, spin-1 and spin- BECs have, espectively, two [8 (feomagnetic and antifeomagnetic o pola) and thee [1 (feomagnetic, antifeomagnetic o pola, and cyclic) gound state phases. Spino BECs, unlike scala BECs, can host a ich vaiety of topological excitations [ In scala BECs, the single-valuedness of the wave function esults in the emegence of votices, unde a complete otation aound which the phase (gauge phase) of the wave function changes by an intege multiple n of π, whee n equals the usual angula momentum quantum numbe. The mass ciculation fo these votices is quantized to nh/m, whee M is the mass of an atom [14, 15. This is no longe the case fo spino BECs with non-zeo spin-expectation pe sandeepgautam4@gmail.com adhikai44@yahoo.com, URL paticle, which is the case fo the feomagnetic phases of spin-1 and spin- BECs [11, 13. Hee the mass ciculation can change continuously by changing spin configuations o spin textue as in the case of coeless votices like Memin-Ho and Andeson-Toulouse votices in spin- 1 BEC [ In the case of spin-1 pola [8 and spin- pola and cyclic [1 BECs, the change in the phase of the wave function (gauge phase) afte a complete otation aound the votex coe can be a factional multiple n of π esulting in the appeaance of a factional-chage votex with mass ciculation equaling a factional multiple n of h/m, whee n is the gauge chage of the factional votex. One example of such a votex is a halfquantum votex o Alice votex in a pola spin-1 BEC [. Besides these, both feomagnetic and pola spin-1 BECs can host pola-coe votices chaacteized by votices with intege chages ±1 and in the spin components m f = ±1 and, espectively, with the component m f = lying in the votex coe ceated by components m f = ±1 [17, 18, 1. The spontaneous fomation of pola-coe votices in feomagnetic spin-1 BEC of 87 Rb has been expeimentally obseved [. The geneation of stable factional-chage votices in the cyclic spin- BEC has also been theoetically investigated [3. In this pape, we study the statical and dynamical popeties of a spin-1 pola BEC and spin- pola and cyclic BECs with zeo magnetization accommodating factional-chage votices with gauge chage n less than unity using a set of coupled mean-field GP equations. In all cases, a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-d) [4 tapping geomety will be employed. Instead of studying a multi-component geneal state, we study how the gound states of these systems will dynamically evolve unde otation aound z axis. These gound states of lowest enegy only populate two of the multi-component spin states and have a binay stuctue and ae descibed by a set of binay mean-field GP equations. Fo an analytic undestanding, we pesent an appoximation scheme based on a Lagange vaiational fomulation with Gaussian ansatz fo the component densities. The esults of the vaiational appoximation ae compaed with an accuate numeical solution of the mean-field model. Static popeties of the axially symmetic votex solutions of
2 spin- BEC have been studied vaiationally by Pogosov et al. [5. Howeve, that study did not conside the factional-chage votices. The pape is oganized as follows. In Sec. II, we descibe the coupled GP equations fo the spin-1 and spin- BECs. In Sec. III, we pesent a classification of diffeent factional-chage votices of spin-1 and spin- BECs which we study in this pape. Hee, the nonlineaities of the equivalent binay system unde otation ae defined in tems of the nonlineaities of the full (f + 1)-component GP equation. In Sec. IV, we pesent a dynamical Lagange vaiational analysis to study the factional-chage spin-1 and spin- votices using a set of binay GP equations whee one o both components host a votex. The numeical and vaiational esults fo the statics and dynamics of factional-chage spin-1 and spin- BECs ae epoted in Sec. V. The pape is concluded by a bief summay and discussion in Sec. VI. II. GP EQUATIONS FOR SPIN-1 AND SPIN- BECS When the tapping fequency along one axis, say ω z, is much lage than the geometic mean of othe two, i.e., ω z ω x ω y, a spin-1 quasi-d BEC of N atoms of mass M each can be descibed by the following set of coupled two-dimensional GP equations fo diffeent spin components m f = ±1, [8, 11, 6 µ ±1 φ ±1 () = Hφ ±1 () ± c 1 F z φ ±1 () + c 1 F φ (), (1) µ φ () = Hφ () + c 1 [F φ 1 () + F + φ +1 (), () whee F {F x, F y, F z } is a vecto with expectation value of the thee spin-opeatos ove the multicomponent wavefunction as the thee components. It is temed as the spin-expectation value [11, and F ± F x ± if y = [φ ±1()φ () + φ ()φ 1 (), (3) F z = ρ +1 () ρ 1 (), H = + V () + c ρ, (4) c = N πγ(a + a ), c 1 = N πγ(a a ), (5) 3l 3l = x + y, V () = x + β y, {x, y}, (6) whee the component density ρ j = φ j () with j = ±1,, the total density ρ = j ρ j, and µ ±1, µ ae the espective chemical potentials and denotes complex conjugate. The component wavefunctions φ j s satisfy the nomalization condition j ρ jd = 1. Hee a and a ae the s-wave scatteing lengths in the total spin and channels, l = /(Mω x ), β = ω y /ω x, γ = ω z /ω x, whee ω x, ω y, ω z ae the confining tap fequencies in x, y, z diections, espectively. Hee length is measued in units of l, density in units of l and chemical potential in units of ω x. Similaly, the dimensionless coupled GP equations fo diffeent spin components m f = ±, ±1,, fo a spin- BEC can be witten as [9, 11, 7 µ ± φ ± () = Hφ ± () + (c / 5)Θφ () + c 1 [ F φ ±1 () ± F z φ ± (), (7) µ ±1 φ ±1 () = Hφ ±1 () (c / 5)Θφ 1() whee + c 1 [ 3/F φ () + F ± φ ± () ± F z φ ±1 (), (8) µ φ () = Hφ () + (c / 5)Θφ () + c 1 3/ [ F φ 1 () + F + φ +1 (), (9) F + =F = (φ +φ +1 + φ 1φ ) + 6(φ +1φ + φ φ 1 ), (1) F z =(ρ + ρ ) + ρ +1 ρ 1, (11) Θ = φ +φ φ +1 φ 1 + φ. (1) 5 Hee c = N πγ(4a + 3a 4 )/(7l ), c 1 = N πγ(a 4 a )/(7l ), c = N πγ(7a 1a + 3a 4 )/(7l ), a, a, and a 4 ae the s-wave scatteing lengths in the total spin, and 4 channels, and µ ±, µ ±1, µ ae the espective chemical potentials. All epeated vaiables have the same meaning as in the spin-1 case. Depending on the values of the inteaction paametes c j, the spino BEC acquies distinct popeties and is classified as feomagnetic, antifeomagnetic o pola, cyclic, etc. Fo a spin-1 BEC, c 1 < coesponds to feomagnetic phase and c 1 > to pola phase [8. Fo a spin- BEC, c 1 < and c > c 1 coespond to feomagnetic phase and c <, c < c 1 coespond to pola phase, and c 1 > and c > coespond to cyclic phase [1, 11. III. CLASSIFICATION OF FRACTIONAL-CHARGE VORTICES Fo a spino BEC with zeo spin-expectation value, F =, the supefluid velocity v s is popotional to the gadient of the gauge phase θ of the wave function, i.e. v s = θ/m. The same is tue in a scala BEC. Hence the spino BECs with F = (spin-1 and spin- pola and spin- cyclic BECs) ae iotational ( v s = ) and the ciculation of the velocity field is quantized [11: vs.dl = nh/m, whee n is an intege o a ational faction. On the othe hand, fo spin-1 and spin- feomagnetic BECs, the ciculation is not quantized [11. The votices in spin-1 and spin- pola and spin- cyclic BECs with the ciculation of the velocity field equal to factional multiple of h/m ae known as factional-chage
3 3 votices, which emege due to the fact that a spino BEC has SO(3) otational symmety in addition to U(1) global gauge symmety of a scala BEC [11, 8. Fo a spino, otation in spin space is geneated by e iϕ, ϕ αs z /, whee α is the azimuthal angle of otation about z axis and S z is the spin pojection. In this study of votices we conside otation aound z diection only as this is the only elevant otation in the pesent quasi-d model confined to the x y plane, whee the dynamics along the z diection is fozen. Nomal wave function and spino must have the same value fo α = and π. A pat of the single-valuedness may come fom the gauge phase (e iθ ) and a pat fom the spin phase (e iϕ ). A. Spin-1/ paticle How a factional chage emeges is aleady explicit in the dynamics of a fundamental spin-1/ paticle unde otation using the Pauli fomalism. A quantum mechanical spin-1/ state is descibed by a complex-valued vecto with two components called a spino, which has a distinct behavio unde otation when compaed with that of a spin- system. In the Pauli fomalism of the spin-1/ system, the matix epesentation of the otation opeation aound diection z can be witten as [8 D(α) =e iszα/ e iσzα/ ( ) 1 = cos 1 ( e iα/ = e iα/ ( α ) i ( 1 1 ) ( α ) sin ), (13) whee σ z S z / is the Pauli matix. This otation opeato has the popety D(α + π) = D(α), D(α + 4π) = D(α), which esults in peculia popeties of a spin-1/ spino. Unde a otation of π, the spino changes sign and emains unchanged unde a otation of 4π. A geneic spino is obtained as χ = D(α)χ, whee χ = (1/, 1/ ) T is a fundamental state with equal pobability in the two components (zeo magnetization). It is customay to define a spino with an exta Gauge phase of e iθ to obtain e iθ (e iα/ /, e iα/ / ) T. To guaantee the single-valuedness unde a otation of π, we take α = β and θ = β/ and obtain the spino e iβ/ (e iβ/ /, e iβ/ / ) T. As is evident, the gauge phase can be scaled out of the wave function, wheeas the spin phases ae inheent to the wave function and cannot be scaled out. This fom of Gauge phase coesponds to an angula momentum 1/, and the singlevaluedness of the spino unde a otation of π demands that the Gauge chage of the spino has the factional value 1/. Thee ae many moe inteesting possibilities of factional chage fo spino BECs of spin 1 and as we see below. B. Spin-1 BEC Thee ae two degeneate gound states of the spin- 1 BEC with zeo (longitudinal) magnetization (M = Fz ()d = ) [9. The fist of these states has φ =. The otation opeato aound diection z in this case can be witten as [11 D(α) = e iα 1 e iα (14) A geneal nomalized state with zeo magnetization and φ = can be obtained by opeating D(α) on the state χ = (1/,, 1/ ) T and is expessed as e iθ (e iα /,, e iα / ) T. The simplest way to maintain a single-valued spino with a factional gauge chage (θ ) is to take θ = α = β/. The wave function, then, becomes e iβ/ (e iβ/ /,, e iβ/ / ) T. This state is vey simila to the spin-1/ spino consideed above. This is a 1/-1/ votex meaning 1/ unit of gauge chage and 1/ unit of spin chage. Because of 1/ unit of gauge chage, this votex is classified as a votex of factional chage 1/. In numeical calculation, it will become a votex of chage in component φ +1 and chage 1 in component φ 1. The second degeneate gound state has φ ±1 = and can not host a votex of factional chage. Hence, 1/-1/ votex is the only possibility fo a factional votex of chage less than one fo a spin-1 BEC. The degeneacy between the two states is boken at a non-zeo value of magnetization M with the fist state (φ = ) emeging as the gound state. C. Spin- BEC Thee ae a few diffeent possibilities of pola and cyclic gound states fo a spin- BEC with zeo magnetization, which lead to diffeent types of factional-chage votices, of which we descibe below the ones with chage less than unity. (a) Thee ae thee degeneate gound states of a nonotating spin- pola BEC with zeo magnetization [9, and we see how they evolve into factional-chage votices in the pesence of otation aound z diection given by the otation opeato [11 D(α) = e iα e iα 1 e iα e iα (15) The fist of these states has the wave-function components φ ±1 = φ =, and a geneal nomalized wave function unde otation can be obtained by opeating D(α) on the epesentative state χ = (1/,,,, 1/ ) T and has the fom e iθ (e iα /,,,, e iα / ) T. The singlevaluedness of the wave function with a factional chage
4 4 (θ ) can be maintained if we take θ = β/, α = β/4 to get e iβ/ (e iβ/ /,,,, e iβ/ / ) T, which is a 1/- 1/4 votex, o a votex of factional chage 1/. This is a votex of chage in component φ + and chage 1 in component φ. The second degeneate gound state of the spin- pola BEC has φ ± = φ = and the nomalized wave function unde otation is e iθ (, e iα /,, e iα /, ) T [9. This state is vey simila to the spin-1 pola BEC state consideed above. This state will be single-valued fo θ = α = β/ to get e iβ/ (, e iβ/ /,, e iβ/ /, ) T which is a 1/-1/ votex o a votex of chage 1/. This geneates a votex of chage in component φ +1 and chage 1 in component φ 1. The thid degeneate gound state of the spin- pola BEC has φ ± = φ ±1 =, and this possibility does not lead to a votex of factional chage. (b) Thee ae two degeneate gound states of a non-otating spin- cyclic BEC [9, and we conside the possibility of geneating factional-chage votex fom these states. The fist of these states has wave-function components φ 1 = φ = φ =, and a geneal nomalized wave function unde otation can be witten as e iθ (e iα / 3,,, e iα /3, ) T. Thee ae fou simple ways to maintain a single-valued spino function to geneate a factional-chage votex [3. (i) One can take θ = β/3, α = β/3, to get e iβ/3 (e 4iβ/3 1/3,,, e iβ/3 /3, ) T which is a 1/3- /3 votex, o a votex of factional chage 1/3. This is a votex of chage 1 in both m f = + and 1 components. (ii) The second choice θ = β/3, α = β/3 leads to the wave function e iβ/3 (e iβ/3 1/3,,, e iβ/3 /3, ) T which is a 1/3-1/3 votex, o a votex of factional chage 1/3. This is a votex of chage 1 in component φ + and chage in component φ 1. (iii) The thid possibility is to take θ = β/3, α = β/3, to obtain e iβ/3 (e 4iβ/3 1/3,,, e iβ/3 /3, ) T, which is a /3-/3 votex, o a votex of factional chage /3. This is a votex of chage in component φ + and chage in component φ 1. (iv) The final choice θ = β/3, α = β/3 yields the wave function e iβ/3 (e iβ/3 1/3,,, e iβ/3 /3, ) T which is a /3-1/3 votex, o a votex of factional chage /3. This is a votex of chage in component φ + and chage 1 in component φ 1. The othe possibility of the cyclic gound state has φ ±1 = and a geneal nomalized otating state has the fom e iθ (e iα /,, i/,, e iα /) T. Howeve, this state does not lead to a votex of factional chage and will not be consideed hee. In all the afoementioned cases of a votex with a factional chage less than unity, the spino BEC has only two non-zeo components. In all these cases, the GP equations fo the spino BEC educe to that fo a binay BEC with components j = 1,, e.g., i t φ j = [ O + + g jφ j + g 1 φ 3 j φ j, (16) O = 1. (17) whee g j s ae the inta-component nonlineaities and g 1 is the inte-component nonlineaity. Fo a pola spin-1 BEC with a 1/-1/ votex (coupling φ ±1 ), these nonlineaities ae defined as: g 1 = g = c + c 1, g 1 = c c 1. (18) Similaly, fo a pola spin- BEC hosting a 1/-1/4 votex (coupling φ ± ) o a 1/-1/ votex (coupling φ ±1 ) the nonlineaities ae g 1 = g = c + 4c 1, g 1 = c 4c 1 + c /5, (19) g 1 = g = c + c 1, g 1 = c c 1 + c /5, () espectively. The same fo a two-component spin- cyclic BEC (coupling φ + and φ 1 ) ae g 1 = c + 4c 1, g = c + c 1, g 1 = c c 1. (1) Using Eqs. (18)-(1) as the definitions of intaand inte-species inteactions, the afoementioned spino BECs with factional-chage votex can be teated as equivalent to a binay BEC. IV. VARIATIONAL APPROXIMATION FOR THE FRACTIONAL-CHARGE VORTEX In all the examples of factional-chage votex discussed in Sec. III, we have two possibilities: (i) a singleo doubly-chaged votex in one component of a binay BEC with components j = 1,, and (ii) a singly-chaged votex in both components. Fist, let us assume a votex in one of the components only, say j =. The binay GP equation fo the components ψ j now has the fom i t ψ j = [ O + δ jl + + g j ψ j + g 1 ψ 3 j ψ j, () whee the Konecke delta δ j sets the centifugal tem in the second component with angula momentum L = 1,. Equation () is applicable in all pola spin-1 and - BECs descibed in Sec. III and cyclic 1/3-1/3, /3-1/3 and /3-/3 votices. We take the vaiational wave functions as [3 η1 ψ 1 = exp [ + iκ 1 (3) w 1 π ψ = L η exp Lπ w L+1 w1 [ w + iκ (4)
5 5 with nomalization ψ j d = η j. Hee w j, the widths, and κ j, the chips, ae the vaiational paametes. The Lagangian of the binay system is [3 [ { 1 L ψ L = N + ( i ( ψ j t ψ j ψ j t ψ ) j j )} + ψ j + ψ j + g j ψ j 4 + g 1 ψ 1 ψ d [ { η 1 = N w1 + 1 } w1 + η { (L + 1) w + 1 } w + η 1g 1 + (L + 1)η g 4πw1 L+3 πw + η 1η g 1 w1 L π(w1 + w )L+1 + η 1 w 1( κ 1 + κ 1) + (L + 1)η w ( κ + κ ). (5) The Eule-Lagange equations fo the vaiational paametes ae d L L dt ẇ j w j =, (6) d L L dt κ j κ j =, (7) which, fo L = 1, can be simplified to (κ 1 + κ 1 ) + 1 = 1 w 4 1 (κ + κ ) + 1 = 1 w 4 κ j = Fom Eq. (3), κ j is + η 1g 1 πw1 4 + η g 1 (w1 w) π (w1 +, w )3 (8) + η g 8πw 4 + η 1g 1 w1 π(w1 +, (9) w )3 ẇj w j. (3) κ j = ẇ j w j + ẅj w j. (31) Using Eqs. (3) and (31), we eliminate κ j and κ j fom Eqs. (8) and (9) and obtain the following dynamical equations fo the widths fo L = 1: ẅ = 1 w 1 w1 4 + η 1g 1 πw1 4 + η g 1 (w1 w) π (w1 +, (3) w )3 ẅ + 1 = 1 w w 4 + η g 8πw 4 + η 1g 1 π w 1 (w1 +, (33) w )3 which ae to be solved numeically fo studying the dynamics. Fo stationay esults of densities, the second deivatives of widths ae to be set to zeo. Similaly, fo L =, we have ẅ = 1 w 1 w1 4 + η 1g 1 πw1 4 + η g 1 π ẅ + 1 = 1 w w 4 + η g 16πw 4 + η 1g 1 π w1(w 1 w) (w1 +, (34) w )4 w 4 1 (w1 +. (35) w )4 Next let us take a votex of unit chage in both components satisfying the binay GP equation i t ψ j = [ O g j ψ j + g 1 ψ 3 j ψ j. (36) This is the case of a spin cyclic 1/3-/3 votex. In this case, we take the vaiational wave functions as ψ j = [ η j wj exp π wj + iκ j. (37) We ecall that if j = 1 epesents the state ψ 1 = φ + and j = epesents the state ψ = φ 1, then the condition of zeo magnetization equies η = η 1 = /3. The Lagangian is [ 1 { i(ψ j t ψ j c.c.) + 1 ψ j + j } + ψ j + g j ψ j 4 + g 1 ψ 1 ψ d L = N = j ( N [η j wj + 1 ) wj + η j g j 8πwj ψ j + η j wj ( κ j + κ j) + N η 1η g 1 w1w π(w1 +. (38) w )3 The Eule-Lagange equations fo the vaiational paametes lead to ẅ j w j + 1 = 1 w 4 j + η jg j 8πw 4 j + η 3 jg 1 π w 3 j (w j w 3 j ) (w 1 + w )4. (39) If we ecall Eq. (1) and the zeo magnetization condition η = η 1 = /3 [9, we find that w = w 1 = w is a solution of Eqs. (39), which educes to ẅ + w = 1 ( w c ) w4 eq 8π w 3, (4) whee w eq is the stationay width. Fo small oscillations w(t) = w eq + X(t), whee X(t) is the deviation fom the stationay value w eq. We can lineaize Eq. (4) in X(t) to obtain Ẍ(t) = ω X(t), ω =. (41) Hence, the components execute isotopic oscillation with a fequency which is twice of the tapping fequency. V. NUMERICAL AND VARIATIONAL RESULTS We solve the coupled spin-1 and spin- GP equations numeically using split-step Cank-Nicolson scheme [31.

A pola spin- BEC with a factional-chage votex is descibed by the binay GP equation (16) which is solved vaiationally using Eqs. (3) and (33) fo this stationay poblem. The numeical and vaiational adial densities in this case fo the 1/-1/, and 1/-1/4 votices in the pola spin- BEC of 3 Na atoms ae shown in (a) and (b), espectively. The same fo pola spin- BEC of 87 Rb atoms ae shown in Figs. (c) and (d). In the case of 1/-1/ votex, thee is a singly-chaged votex in the component φ +1, wheeas the votex is in the component φ + in the case of a 1/- 1/4 votex. In both the cases, the factional chage of the votex is 1/. Fo a spin- cyclic system with a factional-chage votex, we conside a BEC of 1 and 5 3 Na atoms with a = 34.9a B, a =.9a B, and a 4 = 64.5a B, whee a has been modified fom its expeimental value of 45.8a B to access the cyclic phase. This can be achieved expeimentally by exploiting Feshbach esonances [33. The numeical and vaiational densities fo a 1/3-/3, 1/3-1/3, /3-/3, and /3-1/3 votex of a cyclic spin- BEC ae shown in Figs. 3(a), (b), (c), and (d), espectively. The vaiational appoximation fo the 1/3-/3 votex in Fig. 3(a) was obtained using Eq. (39), the same fo the 1/3-1/3, /3-1/3, votices in Figs. 3 (b) and (d) wee obtained using Eqs. All the component votices in Fig. 3 have chage one except the one in 3(c) which has chage. The low-enegy collective modes can be excited in a spino BEC by intoducing a small time-dependent sinusoidal petubation to potential V duing some finite time inteval [34, 35. In ode to excite in-phase isotopic oscillations in a binay system, which coesponds to the two components executing beathing mode oscillations in phase, we apply the tapping potential FIG. 4: (Colo online) Numeical (lines) and vaiational (points) esults of collective-mode oscillation of the ms sizes hi of components (a) mf = + and (b) mf = in a spin pola 3 Na BEC of 5 atoms hosting a 1/-1/4 votex. Numeically, the mode was excited by applying the petubed potential (4). The stationay density of this votex is shown in Fig. (b). The equivalent binay system has a singlychaged votex in one of the components, mf = +. 1 [x {1 + cos(ωd t)} + y {1 + cos(ωd t)} (4) at time t = in eal-time simulation, whee the stength of the petubation 1. We conside the diving fe quency ωd =, and the petubation is switched off ( = ) late at t =. The numeical data fo the collective oscillations is sampled afte this peiod. This mode can be easily excited in the expeiments on the spino BECs with factional-chage votices whee the tapping potential is the same fo the two non-zeo components. An altenative method to excite this mode could be to incease o decease each of the nonlineaities ci in the GP equations by the same facto. To compae the numeical and vaiational esults fo dynamics, we conside two examples: (a) 1/-1/4 votex in pola spin- 3 Na BEC and (b) 1/3-/3 votex in the cyclic spin- 3 Na BEC. The numbe of atoms consideed in each case is 5. In case (a), the collective mode is excited by modifying the tapping potential accoding to the afoementioned pesciption with =.1 in eal-time simulation. The numeical and vaiational esults fo the oot mean squae (ms) sizes of the components ae shown in Figs. 4(a) and (b) fo components mf = + and, espectively. The vaiational esults coespond to the solutions of the coupled Eqs. (3)-(33). The numeical data fo the oscillation is sampled fom t = 5 onwads to emove a tansient peiod afte the petubation is switched off. The vaiables on the odinate (y axis) in Figs. 4(a) and (b) ae not shown explicitly as a shift of the vaiational esults has been given in this diection befoe plotting. It is notewothy that the vaiational and numeical fequencies coincide. In case (b), the collective mode is excited by inceasing all ci s slightly by the same facto 1.95 at t = in eal-time simulation. The vaiational and numeical esults fo the ms sizes in this case ae shown in Fig. 5. It has been shown [9 that the densities fo the mf = + and mf = 1 states become multiple of each othe (ρ 1 = ρ+ ), and the GP equation is completely detemined by the constant c and is independent of c1 and c as in the single-mode appoximation [36. Consequently, the ms sizes fo the two components become V = t

FIG. 5: (Colo online) Numeical (lines) and vaiational (points) esults of collective-mode oscillation of the ms sizes of components m f = +, 1 in a spin- cyclic 3 Na BEC of 5 atoms hosting a 1/3-/3 votex. Numeically, the mode was excited by multiplying the nonlineaities c j by the constant facto 1.95 in eal-time simulation. The stationay density of this votex is shown in Fig. 3(a). The equivalent binay system has a singly-chaged votex in both components, m f = +, 1. identical, and they execute in-phase oscillation. Hence a single size is shown in Fig. 5. The vaiational dynamics in this case coesponds to the solution of Eqs. (39). The numeical value of oscillation fequency. is in excellent ageement with the analytic esult (ω = ) in Eq. (41). The same dynamics can also be obseved by adding a time-dependent petubation to the tapping potential fo a finite inteval of time in eal-time simulation. VI. SUMMARY AND DISCUSSION A scala BEC can only have a votex of intege angula momentum o chage. On the othe hand, a spino BEC can have a factional-chage votex. The simplest of these has factional chage less than unity. We classify all possible factional-chage votices of chage less than unity in spin-1 and spin- BECs. These votices involve only two non-zeo spin components of the spino BEC, between which one o both components may exhibit a votex. The statics and dynamics of these votices ae studied employing an accuate numeical solution and a Gaussian vaiational appoximation to a mean-field GP equation. The numeical and vaiational esults fo stationay densities and fequencies of some collective-mode oscillation of these factional-chage votices ae in good ageement with each othe. These factional chage-votices can be studied expeimentally and the pedictions of the pesent study veified. The pesent study also opens up seveal futue diections of eseach. A spin-3 BEC has a much iche phase diagam possibly involving new phases and will allow diffeent types of factional-chage votices with diffeent chage than epoted hee. The evolution of the pesent factional-chage votex in the pesence of spin-obit coupling and/o Rabi coupling would be an inteesting topic of futue investigation. Also, factional-chage votices of chage lage than unity in spin-1 and spin- BEC might lead to some inteesting featues not seen befoe. Also, the dynamical stability of these votices of chage lage than unity would be an inteesting topic of futue investigation. Acknowledgments This investigation is suppoted in pat by the FAPESP (Pojects: 13/713- and 1/451-) and CNPq (Poject: 338/14-) (Bazil). [1 M. H. Andeson, J. R. Enshe, M. R. Matthews, C. E.
