2 Overview The IntelliTeam CNMS Communication Network Management System is a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-based solution for monitoring and managing a network of S&C SpeedNet Radios. It provides the following features: Monitors performance of SpeedNet Radio Ethernet and wireless interfaces Provides consolidated performance reports on a per radio subgroup level Supports continuous monitoring and management of radio configuration Supports continuous monitoring and management of network topology Supports scheduled software upgrade and backup for one or more radios Supports periodic configuration backups SpeedNet Radios enable utilities to build wireless mesh networks for small area coverage such as an electrical distribution feeder, and networks can be expanded to cover an entire metropolitan area. The SpeedNet system provides fully integrated, twoway communication of real-time information between smart grid components over a peer-to-peer mesh network. SpeedNet Radios automatically build routing tables that define message paths so, if a link is lost, a new path will be quickly established. Operating in the unlicensed 902- to 928-MHz band, the typical range with an omnidirectional antenna is 2 to 5 miles in mesh mode, and more than 6 miles in point-to-multipoint mode with directional antennas. If needed, SpeedNet Repeater Radios can be installed to increase transmission range and provide alternate nodes for message routing. See Figure 1. Figure 1. A typical SpeedNet Radio Mesh Network. 2 S&C Instruction Sheet

3 Overview The modular sections of the IntelliTeam CNMS system are opened from the main menu accessed with the Start button. See Figure 2. A hierarchy of menus and submenus are available in each module: Topology Configuration Error Management Performance Security Report Manager Application Settings Tools Help Figure 2. 4 The Topology module builds and depicts the network topology. This module provides tools for the user to build a physical and logical topological model of the network. Modeling radios as objects that can be stored in the database helps manage an individual radio or a set of radios. It also provides a view of the geographical deployment and the interconnectivity of the radios. Discovery The Discovery process identifies devices of interest deployed in the local network or in the specified networks. A network can be discovered by specifying a network IP address and netmask combination, by providing an IP address range, or by importing the network details from a spreadsheet document. The IntelliTeam CNMS system uses SNMP standard sysobjectid to verify whether each located device is equipment of interest. After determining the device availability, an SNMP ping is issued to find the radio type, by querying the sysobjectid. Once the radio is identified as equipment of interest, the IntelliTeam CNMS system proceeds with the Deep Discovery process and collects the necessary inventory details from each radio. Users can view the discovery progress and discovery results at any time, and the Discovery Engine can be configured to periodically search for new radios that have been added to the network. Viewing the Network The Discovery window lists all networks scheduled for discovery. Use options on the toolbar to carry out such operations as Add, Modify, Delete, and Filter on the displayed list of network details: 1. Navigate to Topology > Discovery. The Discovery window is displayed. See Figure 3. For each network it lists: The Network, Mask, Start IP, and End IP of the network range The Discovery Status The scheduler type The last execution The admin status 2. Use the options in the toolbar to carry out actions on the listed networks. Figure 3. Discovery window. 4 S&C Instruction Sheet

Note: If Next Execution Time is specified, the discovery process will automatically start at the specified time. Setting Auto Discovery Enable/Disable Auto-discovery of the local networks requires a toggle operation. If the toggle operation is enabled, based on the current Network Interface Card (NIC) configuration of the CNMS server the list of local networks that the CNMS is part of is obtained. Upon starting/restarting the CNMS Server, the Auto Discovery process is executed. By default auto discovery is disabled. To enable Auto Discovery: 1. Note: The status is changed to Disabled in the Admin Status column. As a result, scheduler will not be executed as specified in the Next Execution Time column. Subgroup A subgroup is a logical collection of radios aggregated together to ease the process of monitoring and control. The Global subgroup is a parent domain under which all the domain/subgroups reside. Users can create subgroups to represent a single radio or a group of radios based on the purpose of the radio deployment. Centralized subgroup management supported by IntelliTeam CNMS reflects any subgroup creation and/or modification in the tree for all the other users. The following operations can be performed on a subgroup: Add Subgroup Adds a subgroup to the Global subgroup or to an existing subgroup in the IntelliTeam CNMS system Edit Subgroup Allows changes to the existing parameters of the selected subgroup Delete Subgroup Allows deletion of any of the existing subgroups. Adding a Subgroup To add a new subgroup: 1. Navigate to Topology > Add Subgroup, or right click on any subgroup and select Add Subgroup. The Add Subgroup window opens. See Figure 14 on page Enter the subgroup name and description for the subgroup in the General Details section. 3. To select the subgroups, expand the tree view displayed in the Subgroup Details section of the window, and click the appropriate check box. 4. Specify the location of the subgroup in terms of one of the following in the Map Location Details section: Address Location the longitude and latitude coordinates 5.
