2 Wittenberg Nursing Curriculum Meeting Minutes ES 2 a) Called to order 3:21 pm Wittenberg University Nursing Curriculum b) Minutes of June 22, 2015 meeting approved. Moved by S. Moeller, seconded by W. Perry. c) reports: None d) Administrative reports: E. Sorensen 1. Curriculum shaping to 2 courses per term. E. Sorensen reported trials during Summer and Fall 2015 of delivering courses in shorter time frames to facilitate completion. Summer 2015 NUR 405 (2 credits) was delivered in 5 weeks instead of 8; NUR 300 and 301 (2 credits each) were delivered in 3 weeks. This meant that students met twice weekly instead of once; the Tuesday meeting was online and the Thursday meeting was classroom. In Fall 2015 NUR 400 (4 credits) was delivered in 8 weeks instead of 16 weeks. This course was more online as students assessed a virtual patient. E. Sorensen (course instructor) and S. Moeller (RN-BSN student) reported that RN-BSN student feedback was positive. In Spring 2016 NUR 401 (4 credits) is scheduled for the first 8 weeks and RN-BSN-only Span 105 (4 credits) is scheduled for the second 8 weeks. E. Sorensen will monitor the student experience as the pace will be challenging. Students are excited about completing the coursework quicker. 2. Approval of NUR 403 MW. E. Sorensen reported that the Wittenberg General Education Advisory approved her proposal to designate NUR 403 as fulfilling the math-reasoning-intensive (M) and writing-intensive (W) general education categories. Students who have already completed NUR 403 will receive the designation. 3. RN-BSN-only Spanish 105 (4 credits) & 106F (4 cerdits) Spring/Summer E. Sorensen reported that the Languages department was supportive to her proposal to create a health-care focused section of adult Spanish 105 and 106F. Dr. Christine McIntyre will teach it in Spring and the first six weeks of Summer The course will meet twice a week in classroom. E. Sorensen will monitor the students experience. 4. T. Williams asked about completely online RN-BSN courses. Discussion occurred about our students preferences. W. Perry suggested that Wittenberg Nursing consider live online synchronous learning. e) Unfinished business: None f) New business: Reviewed purpose as stated in Bylaws. Reviewed applicable CCNE Standard, location in CCNE Self-Study & applicable Systematic Plan section.
3 Wittenberg Nursing Curriculum Meeting Minutes ES 3 Bylaws Curriculum. This committee consists of 3 elected faculty members and 2 elected students who have voice and vote. The Dean of the School of Community Education serves as ex officio without vote. Functions include: a) Reviewing the nursing curricula to ensure compliance with the: 1) Mission, vision, and of Wittenberg University. 2) Ohio Board of Nursing and Board of Regents requirements. 3) Higher Learning Commission. 4) Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) standards for excellence in nursing education. 5) Other national nursing standards as appropriate. b) Approving recommendations for curricular change. c) Recommending revisions in curricula, philosophy and organizing framework. d) Recommending resource requirements for curricular implementation. e) Transmitting approved changes to the Association for information and, where appropriate, for action. f) Establishing and disseminating to the faculty the committee s policies and procedures for reviewing and revising curriculum. CCNE Standard III. Quality: Curriculum and Teaching-Learning Practices The curriculum is developed in accordance with the s mission,, and expected student outcomes. The curriculum reflects professional nursing standards and guidelines and the needs and expectations of the community of interest. Teaching-learning practices are congruent with expected student outcomes. The environment for teaching-learning fosters of expected student outcomes. Williams asked the Curriculum to include contemporary course content on quality metrics, hospital regulatory agencies, patient experience, and hospital reimbursement as these are Community Mercy Health Partners expectations for BSNprepared nurse managers and leaders. R. Wright asked whether NUR 405 Informatics includes fundamentals of collecting and analyzing healthcare data in Excel. W. Perry teaches NUR 405 and will add this to the course content. E. Sorensen reported that NUR 403 Research students learn to use SPSS statistical analysis software. S. Moeller reported that learning SPSS was helpful in understanding other research reports. T. Williams moved to adjourn 3:46pm, seconded by S. Moeller. The next meeting will be in June REVISED SYSTEMATIC PROGRAM EVALUATION PLAN The Wittenberg Nursing Systematic Plan (SPEP) represents formal, documented analysis of student and outcomes and use of the results of that analysis to foster improvement. The SPEP guides the collection of data from multiple sources and provides benchmarks to which to compare the data.
