We will review, create, and evaluate business documents, business spreadsheets, business databases, and business presentations. BAD 1335 is an applied business communication course. An applied course means you will be doing and creating more than reading. CSM computers use Office 2010 software (Word 2010, Excel 2010, Access 2010, and PowerPoint 2010). The package you purchased at CSM includes a trial version if you do not have this software on your personal computers. The textbook is organized by chapters (called Workshops and Modules). The chapters include Active Text areas where, at your option, you perform the activities as you read. The text also comes with a Student Data CD; you will need these files. You will use the online platform, Myitlab. It includes a simulation player that allows you to review and create business communications. It also contains the course materials and assignments. As the course description states, you will be using a computer with internet access every week. You will access Myitlab during and outside of class frequently. Note that you will not use Blackboard (Bb) for this course. The Course Schedule lists what you should be doing by when, although you can and should work ahead. If have questions, just ask. I look forward to working with you during this semester.

3 Page 3 of 15 Course Description CATALOG DESCRIPTION AND CREDIT HOURS The College Catalog states for BAD-1335 (Applied Business Communications) - Students review, create, and evaluate business communications including spreadsheets, databases, word processing documents, graphics, and presentations. Students learn to retrieve, process, classify, sort, and evaluate business data; effectively communicate data and information to make business decisions; solve business problems individually and in teams; and recognize ethical implications for business managers when communicating information. Credit Hours: Three (3) PREREQUISITES A prerequisite means you need to take a placement test or another course before you can take this course. There are no prerequisites for this course. SKILL REQUIREMENTS Note that students enrolling in a web course are assumed to have computer skills, whatever the course. Students unfamiliar with Windows and computer basics (e.g., keyboard, mouse, file management, copying, etc.) will need to spend much more time outside class learning the basics. Some beginning students find it beneficial to take OFT 1201 before taking BAD Course Objectives The course objectives for BAD 1335 are listed below. (A) Recognize what makes business communications effective (B) Apply strategies to organize business communications (C) Recognize and use analysis tools to make business decisions (D) Review and create effective business communications (E) Evaluate business communications for effectiveness Each course objective is linked to an assignment that measures your level of learning. For example, there is a practice assignment and an objective test question about identifying ethical problems in business communication that measures whether students have learned the objective, (A) Recognize what makes business communications effective. Assignments & Grading ASSIGNMENTS IN GENERAL Your Office textbook - Read all the features including the Objectives, the Prepare Case, the Troubleshooting boxes, the Side Notes, the Real World Advice boxes, the Consider This box, the Quick References boxes, Concept Check, Key Terms, and Visual Summary. At your option, complete the steps in the Active Text boxes (the blue boxes) while reading this workshop using the files on the student data CD. (Note that the text is written so that you are reading and doing at the same time.) Your Office Student Data CD You will use the files on the CD frequently. If you misplace the Student Data CD, you can download the files at Professor s Notes - Read the Professor s Notes in Myitlab. Training - Complete the Training assignments in Myitlab. These assignments use a simulation player. Problems - Complete the Problems in Myitlab. These assignments also use the Discussion tool where you post your answer and reply to another student s answers.

4 Page 4 of 15 Tests There are five tests, and they are completed in Myitlab. The tests are two parts. The first part is an objective question test (multiple-choice and true/false). The second part is using the computer to create and evaluate a business communication. Course Capstone The Course Capstone is an assignment that you work on throughout the semester. You will select your own business and create different business communications. Optional Learning Activities Myitlab contains optional learning activities (such as videos). Depending on your learning style, you may select one or more of these activities to help you better learn the concepts and skills. COURSE WORKLOAD BAD-1335 uses a Course Schedule that lists what you should be doing each week. Note that in college you will spend 1 to 3 hours of study/work per credit hour for face-to-face courses. Most college courses are 3 credit hours, so you will spend up to 3 to 9 hours each week outside class for one course (3 credits x 1 hour = 3 hours or 3 credits x 3 hours = 9 hours). Web courses are a bit different because we do not meet for 3 hours per week in class. You will have the normal amount of time plus an additional 3 hours that you would normally spend in-class. This means you need to spend 6 to 12 hours per week for each web course. (However, the hours per week will increase if you take an accelerated format like mini-semesters, summer semesters and late-starts.) You need to login to Myitlab at least three times per week to successfully complete the course materials. POINTS AND PERCENTAGES # of Assignments Percentage Reading Myitlab Training % 15 points each (for a total of 150 points) Problems % 10 points each (for a total of 150 points) Test: Objective Questions 5 25% Either 45 or 70 points (for a total of 300 points) Test: Application Questions 5 25% Either 45 or 70 points (for a total of 300 points) Course Capstone 1 25% 300 points Totals % 1,200 Points GRADE CALCULATION The grade for the course is calculated by dividing the points you earn by the total possible points. Here is an example. Assume that you have earned 958 points for the entire semester. If you divide 958 by the total possible points of 1200, your percentage grade is a 79.83%. This is a C grade. This course uses the standard percentages as CSM. An "A" is 100% to 90.00%; a "B" is 89.99% to 80.00%; a "C" is 79.99% to 70.00%; a "D" is 69.99% to 60.00%; and, a "F" is 59.99% or less. Quality Matters Approved Points This logo recognizes that this course met Quality Matters review standards as of the Fall 2010 semester based on the design work by Professor Daphne A. Morris, B.A., J.D. The Quality Matters program is a faculty-centered peer course review - quality assurance process for online learning. Review criteria are linked to external standards; criteria and process are supported through instructional design principles;

5 Page 5 of 15 and the process is vetted by faculty experts. The goals of the program are to increase student retention, learning, and satisfaction in online courses by implementing better course design. Quality Matters is sponsored by Maryland Online and has been adopted by hundreds of higher education institutions across forty-two states, Canada, Bermuda, and Australia. Visit Quality Matters at for additional information. Professor's Instructions BAD-1335 is a master course; all professors/instructors use the same materials and assignments. However, there are items that individual professors/instructors may decide to change. Here is a list of instructions for your particular professor/instructor. DUE DATES FOR ASSIGNMENTS The due dates and times are listed in the Course Schedule. Menu. Due dates are also listed on the Course LATE WORK & PROBLEM SUBMISSIONS Assignments submitted after the due date/time will not be accepted. Assignments submitted late will earn a "0." Excuses such as computer problems, electricity issues, illness, and family emergencies will not qualify as an exception to this policy. Remember that you have the assignments on the first day, so you can plan your time. You never know when something will happen that may interfere with you meeting a due date; therefore, you are encouraged to work ahead. TESTS The tests are open-book and open-notes. You should study for the tests; the questions ask you to apply concepts, not just go find an answer (or memorize a phrase). Note that you must complete the tests in Myitlab without consulting anyone in any manner (except for your professor). ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS Individual instructors may add assignments. Additional assignments are listed below. There are no additional assignments for this section. PROFESSOR'S FEEDBACK AND GRADING How quickly do you get feedback on your assignment? o For Training assignment, myitlab provides instant feedback. o For Problems, students provide feedback using the Discussion tool. I will provide general comments as appropriate o For the objective-question Tests, myitlab provides instant feedback. o For the application-question Tests, I will provide feedback within one week of the due date. o For the Course Capstone, I will grade within one week of the due date. Note that this assignment is due at the end of the semester; therefore, I will feedback if you request. If you prepare drafts during the semester, I will provide feedback as time permits. Official grade-to-dates o I will provide your official grade-to-date (GTD) two times during the semester. o I will provide your official midterm grade that is submitted to CSM. Calculate your grade-to-date o Some students like to know what their current GTD at any point in time. I created an Excel spreadsheet where you can type the grades you earn, and it will give you a current GTD. It is located in myitlab.

Netiquette (Communicating Online) Netiquette is a word for guidelines on how to communicate online outside of friends and family. Here are some recommendations for this course. This is a business course; therefore, we will communicate as if we were in a normal business work environment. A good rule is - type your communications ( , messages, and discussion assignments) as you would type a formal paper. This means that you need to type complete sentences with proper spelling and grammar. Do not use "short-hand" as you would when you talk, text, or chat with friends. (Things like OMG or "2" for the word "to" are not business-appropriate.)

7 Page 7 of 15 When you type in myitlab, you use the HTML Editor. You will see three toolbars. The first toolbar contains an "abc" icon that will check your spelling. If you copy/paste from Word, you need to use the Clean HTML Code button on the first toolbar; when the window appears, click everything under other. If you copy/paste from Word into the HTML Editor, you need to use the Clean HTML Code button on the first toolbar (see above). When the window appears, click everything under other (see below). Remember to edit for grammar, typos, and mechanical errors (even if you use the abc icon). Review the format of your communications. Bullets and numbers are easier to read than one paragraph that goes on for a page. Fonts should be similar throughout. Blank lines between paragraphs are helpful. When we communicate in written form, we cannot "see" non-verbal signals. Therefore, be careful how you word your communications. We all can "read" a communication differently than the writer intended. Also, keep this in mind if you are the writer - just because you "meant" it to sound funny does not mean someone else will agree. Be respectful. And, if you have questions - ask. Student Assistance The College provides many forms of student assistance. For a list of services, go to This page provides one-stop access for college services (like payment plans, advising, security) and learning resources (like online tutoring, writing assistance, library services). For example, the Library Resources link includes information on citations, research assistance, search engines, evaluating web sites, and information literacy resources. If you have not taken a web course before, visit (the Readi assessment) or (the Smarter Measure assessment).
