Required Textbooks Title: Edition: Author: Publisher: Abnormal Psychology in a Changing World with Mypsychlab access 9th Edition Nevid, Rathus, and Greene Pearson Course Objectives 1. Understand the general perspectives on the causes and treatment of abnormal behavior 2. Describe the classification system and assessment techniques for abnormal behavior 3. Understand the types, symptoms and causes of emotional, social, personality and psychotic disorders. 4. Understand the symptoms, causes, and treatment of maladaptive behavior seen in children and adolescents 5. Understand the major therapeutic approaches for psychological disorders. Course Practices Grading EXAMS: The emphasis in this course is on mastery of the material. In order to demonstrate mastery, there will be twelve 25-question exams which will be taken through the individualized online learning environment of mypsychlab.com. Students may retake each exam a maximum of four times to demonstrate their understanding of the material. The tests are to be used as diagnostic instruments, in that the results indicate what material is understood and what is not understood. With this feedback, more complete knowledge is attainable. To aid in this process, the tests will be scored right after they are taken, and the correct answers are provided. Each test has a 50 minute maximum time limit.

These exams will be taken individually online through mypsychlab, they may be taken a maximum of four times to achieve mastery, and they will be open book. The emphasis of this course is on individual mastery of the material. Therefore, exam results are graded and displayed and alternate forms of a quiz may be taken up to four times to demonstrate mastery of the material which is defined at a minimum of 70% correct. Once the student achieves this minimum score or above, he/she will be awarded 50 points for that chapter. However, if the student does not achieve a minimum of 70% after 4 attempts, they will be given 0 for that chapter. The final date for assignments is the last day of the course: 01/02/15 at midnight. * Since the student controls her/his own rate of progress, self-discipline is required. Chapters to be tested over are: Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Chapter 13 Chapter points possible Media Assignments There are 30 media assignments that each student is required to complete. These assignments are short media clips that you are to watch and then answer multiple choice questions about them. You must master each assignment at 100% to receive the 10- points each one is worth. You will have 30 minutes to complete each assignment and you will have four opportunities to reach the 100% mastery. The last date to complete the assignments is 01/02/15. Assignments (10 points for each assignment mastered) These assignments are listed in your Assignment Calendar under 01/02/15. Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 3 assignments 1 assignment 2 assignments

This website not only contains the written and audio text of your textbook, but it also enables you to develop study plans before you take the chapter tests by offering you pre-tests and post-tests which will delineate the material that you know from the material that you need to study in more detail. In addition, it provides you with videos and simulations on psychological information, as well as podcasts and you tube links discussing psychological principles. It also offers flashcards, interactive tutorials, and a 3-D simulation on the working of the brain. Finally, it gives you a complete, comprehensive study guide which includes practice tests, glossaries, study hints, and objectives for each chapter.

Power points slides for each of the chapters that will be studied this semester can be found in your Study Plan and Course Content section. However, you will need to scroll down to the end of this section to find the power point folder which contains all the slides. 7 You will need to disable your pop-up blockers each time you go into mypsychlab. You will find instructions in how to do this below. If you need tech support, you can phone a number, enter a 24-hour chat, or send them an . You can get to this information by clicking on support and then on customer tech support. There is a user guide when you first go into mypsychlab. This will help orientate you to the web site and answer any general questions. I strongly suggest that you use the web browsers Internet Chrome or Firefox when you are on myspychlab. Manage Pop-Up Blockers As pop-up blockers may interfere with the installation of plug-ins and players used in your course, depending on your preference, you can either allow pop-ups from specific sites or disable browser pop-up blockers for all web sites. Allow Pop-ups from Specific Sites Browser Instructions When you see the yellow Information Bar at the top of the web page about a pop-up being blocked, click the bar and select Always allow pop-ups from this site, and click Yes to confirm. or Internet Explorer 1. From the browser Tools menu, select Pop-up Blocker, then Pop-up Blocker Settings. 2. Add *.pearsoned.com, *.pearsoncmg.com, and *.mylanguagelabs.com as allowed sites. 3. Click Close. Safari In Safari you can either enable or disable the pop-up blocker. There is no per-site control. See next section for details on how to disable pop-up blocker. Disable Pop-up Blockers for All Sites Browser Instructions Internet Explorer: From the browser Tools menu, select Pop-up Blocker, then Turn off Pop-up Blocker.

Safari: From the Safari menu, clear the checkmark for Block pop-up windows. THIRD-PARTY POP-UP BLOCKERS (GOOGLE, AOL, YAHOO, ETC.) While using your course, you should disable any third-party pop-up blockers that may be installed in your browser, such as those included with Google, AOL, Yahoo, MSN, EarthLink, and other toolbars. Most third-party toolbars have hidden pop-up blockers and other security features that may block your course. To check if any of these are active in Internet Explorer: Browser Instructions for Internet Explorer 7.x, Internet Explorer 8.x, & Internet Explorer 9.x To permanently disable third-party toolbar pop-up blockers: 1. From the browser View menu, select Toolbars. 2. If any entries are checked between Links and Lock the Toolbars, remove the checkmark for that entry. If you have more than one entry use must repeat this step for each entry to remove the checkmark and disable the pop-up blocker for that toolbar. With most popular pop-up blockers, you can allow pop-ups from specific locations. This setting is generally found in the Settings, Preferences, or Options portion of your pop-up blocker. For specific instructions, please refer to the online help for your pop-up blocker. TIPS FOR MANAGING POP-UP BLOCKERS Most popular pop-up blockers produce an audio alert when they block a pop-up window. If you have speakers installed, raise your volume so you can hear whether a pop-up blocker is being used. Many pop-up blockers let you use the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard to allow an individual pop-up window. If you are unsure how to configure your pop-up blocker, hold down the "Ctrl" key when clicking the "Install" or "Detect" buttons on the Installation Wizard. It is common to have multiple pop-up blockers installed, so you will need to configure each pop-up blocker. For example, you may have Internet Explorer 7.0 (with Service Pack 2), the Google Toolbar, and Norton Internet Security. Each has its own, independent pop-up blocker that you will have to disable separately. Be aware that if you install third-party applications on your computer, the installation process may be configured to install new toolbars by default. You will have to disable pop-up blockers for any toolbar you install. Alternately, during the installation process you can clear the option to install the new toolbar.
