Saving lives. Enhancing life COMMUNITY REPORT Our Legacy in Practice: Meeting Essential Community Health Needs
01 chairman s message Dear Deaconess Family and Friends, We are pleased to share our 2015 report to the community. Today s Deaconess is an independent, not-for-profit enterprise managing health services, investments and community grant initiatives in Greater Cincinnati and across the country. Our legacy is one of compassionate care in the Christian tradition rooted in addressing community health issues by taking care directly to where it is needed. We breathe life into our legacy by operating and supporting community-based health services and making philanthropic grants. We also collaborate with like-minded organizations to resolve critical health needs and sponsor life-saving initiatives, such as the groundbreaking Heimlich Heroes training and education program. We believe that today s healthcare yields the best outcomes when concentrated on improving access to care, encouraging prevention and supporting wellness initiatives. Our investments and programs reflect this philosophy. This report offers a snapshot of our work. We appreciate your interest and invite you to join us on our journey to save lives and enhance the lives of people we serve. E. ANTHONY WOODS Chairman of the Board
02 overview An Independent, Diversified, Not-for-profit Health Enterprise The work of Deaconess Associations, Inc. spans three core practices: ADVANCING HEALTH SOLUTIONS Deaconess actively seeks to develop services for fast-growing populations, including our aging population. We re focused on unique needs of seniors, such as the demand for skilled nursing services, assisted and independent living, and high quality in-home care among other initiatives. SAVING AND ENHANCING LIVES We are fortunate to have a long-term relationship with healthcare pioneer Henry Heimlich, MD. His legacy of innovation and development of the Heimlich Maneuver have saved countless lives around the world. Now, through the Heimlich Heroes program, we are enabling thousands of youth and adults to be trained each year on the technique. INVESTING IN COMMUNITY HEALTH For some people, access to even basic healthcare is difficult. Lack of availability and cost are just two of the reasons. The Deaconess Foundation is helping to change that through prevention and wellness services delivered under the Deaconess Health Check banner at schools and other locations, and through a range of other grant activity.
03 our core focuses Meeting Our Community s Top Health Priorities The Deaconess Foundation s charitable investments support causes that directly and immediately save lives, satisfy unmet health needs, and improve the lives we touch. The Foundation has made more than $3 million in grants since 2013, consistent with our community s top health priorities. Deaconess Health Check Clinics in nine locations around the Tristate provide basic medical and dental care, screenings, physicals and first aid to people who otherwise would not receive them Western Hills and Dater High Schools and Fairfield City Schools Offer medical and dental care for over 4,000 students and families Children s Home of Cincinnati Provides more than 350 youth with enhanced professional nursing care and prevention services delivered in renovated facilities Children s Home of Northern Kentucky Expand opiate addiction treatment and behavioral health services to 700 students Strategies to End Homelessness Provides care for nearly 350 homeless men and women at three new Cincinnati facilities Talbert House Integrates primary medical care for children and adults at Walnut Hills and Roselawn Talbert House facilities Health Care Access Now (HCAN) Reduces unnecessary emergency department use and facilitates prenatal and chronic disease care for 2,000 uninsured or otherwise vulnerable people ACCESS TO CARE Access to care takes many forms from the availability of basic, primary care to someone s physical ability to obtain the care where it is offered. Roselawn Park Funds a quarter-mile walking track around the city s first outdoor community gym to encourage healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic disease GreenLight Fund Deaconess is the lead grant-maker to this new, collaborative community fund to improve economic opportunities and outcomes for low-income children, youth and families Boys and Girls Clubs The Fit for Life program has 7,000 club members at 12 sites joining in physical activity after school and provides 150,000 hot, nutritious meals and 100,000 healthy snacks YMCA of Greater Cincinnati The Y s Diabetes Prevention program provides regular screening for nearly 1,000 participants, with over 90 percent reporting improved health PREVENTION & WELLNESS The most effective investment in lifting a community s overall health and lowering costs is through prevention and wellness programs. EDUCATION & TRAINING Helping prepare people to care for others is a hallmark of this Deaconess effort, which has two primary focal points: life-saving techniques and nursing education. Heimlich Heroes In 2015, nearly 18,000 children and adults in 37 states were taught, free of charge, to recognize the signs of choking, minimize or eliminate the potential risk, and perform the Heimlich maneuver Deaconess Nursing Scholarships Deaconess awarded 16 scholarships, totaling more than $100,000, to undergraduate and graduate nursing students in area programs in 2015
04 business focus: long-term care Care for the Fast-Growing Senior Population Among our health services, Deaconess is known for its work in senior care, providing services where they are needed in the community. Our subsidiary, Deaconess Long-Term Care, is a great example. Deaconess currently manages four communities in Cincinnati, Blanchester and Mason, Ohio, and Ottawa, Kansas. Our communities offer a choice of living arrangements and levels of care from independent to skilled nursing, with specialties in rehabilitation and dementia. We take a unique approach to our vocation for senior care. We understand that each senior community is different based on the residents served; the community s location in an urban, rural or suburban setting; and the staff who support the residents. At the same time, we provide management oversight to ensure services are standardized and best practices are implemented. Compared with national organizations, we offer an extraordinary degree of service and attention to our residents. Our management teams are constantly at our communities ensuring the residents experience is exceptional and that staff members are truly supported. Learn more at deaconess-healthcare.com.
