2 PHYSICIAN REFERRAL AND CONSULTATION SERVICES T he University of Kansas Hospital is dedicated to providing excellent patient-centered care. Because we value our relationships with our referring physicians, we have created a variety of convenient services that makes it easy for you to: Refer and schedule patients. Consult with a specialist by phone. Admit and transfer patients to the hospital. Other services we offer to support you include our telemedicine program, continuing medical education programs, physician directory and Web-based tools. Referring and Scheduling Patients You have two convenient ways to refer your patients to The University of Kansas Hospital for outpatient visits. Call or toll free , Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Fax a patient appointment form to Related medical records and/or insurance forms may be faxed to the same number. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HOSPITAL

3 By phone. Your phone calls are answered by experienced representatives in our Physician Consultation Center. They will provide you with detailed information about our physicians and departments at the hospital and help you schedule the most convenient appointment for your patient with one of the hospital s specialists. You will be connected directly to a scheduler in your requested specialty. By fax. If you use our easy patient appointment fax form, the completed form will be faxed back to you. It will include the patient s appointment date and time and the physician s name. The patient will be notified of the appointment by phone or mail and provided directions to the hospital. Call for copies at or toll free Members of our Physician Relations Team also will be happy to provide you with forms and to visit with you personally to discuss the hospital s referral services. 4 Patient Consultations by Phone When you need a prompt telephone consultation with a specialist, the Physician Consultation Center will find a specialist who meets your patient s needs and page that specialist to consult with you. To consult about a patient by phone, call or toll free , 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Transferring Patients 24/7 The Transfer Center is a one-call service center that assists all parties involved with the transfer of urgent and same-day admissions to The University of Kansas Hospital. To contact the Transfer Center, call toll free , 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All transfers require a physician-to-physician consult to discuss the condition of the patient prior to acceptance. Physician Directory The University of Kansas Hospital s Physician Directory is your guide to specialists in more than 200 medical fields. 5 Telemedicine Services The University of Kansas Medical Center s Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth gives physicians and their patients access to specialists without traveling far from home. Through a video network that links rural areas with the medical center, physicians and their patients can take advantage of telemedicine services in a large variety of clinical specialties. Both regularly scheduled clinics and individual consults are available. These services may consist of a combination of telemedicine and outreach clinic ("in person") visits. 6 Physician Relations Team The University of Kansas Hospital is dedicated to building and retaining successful, long-term relationships with physicians in our region. Our Physician Relations Team regularly contacts community physicians in the Kansas City metropolitan area and several rural counties. Team members can offer you the following support: Identify your practice needs and work to provide services and specialists to meet your physician referral needs. Provide information about new services, physicians and departments. Assist you and your office staff in securing timely patient referrals with the appropriate specialists. Organize physician-to-physician meetings at your office with specialists who practice at The University of Kansas Hospital. Provide information to your staff about managed care and insurance plans that the hospital accepts. Troubleshoot problems and communicate your needs directly to the appropriate individual or organization within the hospital. Serve as a contact for any of your questions. 7 Locations The University of Kansas Hospital is conveniently located one mile east of I-35 at 39th Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard in Kansas City, Kan., and is easily accessible from both sides of the state line. The Cancer Center and Medical Pavilion, is located at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Belinder Road, Westwood, Kan. Here, specialists use state-of-the-art technologies and innovative techniques for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer. This location also provides internal medicine, laboratory, complete diagnostic and imaging services, and after-hours urgent care services. KU MedWest is located at 7405 Renner Road, Shawnee, Kan. This convenient location provides primary care and specialty care services, complete diagnostic and imaging services, laboratory services, an outpatient surgery center and after-hours urgent care. Our system of services also offers convenient neighborhood settings for primary and cardiology care.
